The censuses each ten years were done by Enumeration Districts, each District being described by the enumerater. The descriptions are useful to help give context to the Household listings. If you have family in one community it is often useful to look at close neighbors for "stray" relatives, as often domestic servants were closely related to the families in a household, and labour was exchanged between the families and hamlets.

"This district lies to the N. of district No3 from which it is separated by a range of hills about 7 miles in breadth. This district lies in what is called the Aird of Coigach, commencing at Culnacraig and lying along the S. shore of Coygach, it extends to the march between Achiltibuie and Badintarbit."
Notes on this District:
Handwriting and spelling on this and the other 1841 descriptions of districts is quite different to that on the census documents, the "long s" was not used in the word Ross, etc. It looks like late 19th century work, possibly transcribed from earlier documents.
Places enumerated in the 29 pages;
"This district lies to the N and N.E. of district No11. It extends from the W. march of Auchnahaird, which lies on the N shore of Coygach to the eastern extremity of the farm of Inverpolly. This district embraces a large tract of the wide extent of hill ground which lies between the coast of Coygach and the parish of Assynt, in the County of Sutherland. All the houses in this district are confined to the farms of Auchnahaird and Inverpolly."

"This district embraces the rest of the quod sacra Parish of Ullapool, being the Western extremity of Coygach. On the South shore of Coygach, its boundary is the march between Altandow and Old Dornie; and on the N. shore its boundary is the march between Camuscoille and Auchnahaird."

The Enumerator is listed as Mr Donald MacRae. Donald enumerates himself as living with his family in this census at Polglass 61-30.
Places enumerated;
"This Division begins at Altanristol, named in first Division, extends along the coast, including an Island (Isle of Ristol) around More Head to head of LochEnard. It comprises 11 small Townships or Hamlets containing about 100 families. The extent of the Division is supposed to be fully 12 miles long, and an average breadth of 1/4 of a mile."

"First Division in the District of Coigach. This Division is supposed to be 8 Miles long and onefourth mile broad. There are in it 9 Hamlets or Townships containing about 120 separate families. The Division extends from the Big Rock along the sea to Altanristol beside a church the only one in the District."
Notes on this Division:
The Enumerator did not like middle initials in names; all Margarets became Margrets, Catharines became Cathrines, and Rodericks became Rodricks!

"Second Division in the District of Coigach. This Division extends from Altanristol named in the first-Division along the sea round more Head or (Ru Coigach) to the hed of loch Enard encluding Isle Ristol. this Division comprises 9 small Hamlets or Townships containing about 100 families - The extent of it is supposed to be about 12 miles long and an average breath of onefourth mile"

Kenneth McLennan was the enumerator, he enumerated himself as being at Reiff 71-59.
Badentarbet was not enumerated separately in 1871, I think the first four Households of Polbain were actually resident there.
