On the 28th day of 1853 The Sir Allan McNab, a newly built metal-sheathed ship of 840 tons left its home port of Liverpool in England, bound for the Colony of Van Diemen's Land.
On arrival 99 days later on the first of February 1854 at Hobart, a list was compiled of the passengers with notes of where the passengers went, including details such as the hirer, and wage paid. That hiring list forms the basis of this file.
Van Diemen's Land is now the Australian State of Tasmania. Hugh Campbell, a historian there (CONTACT INFO), has transcribed the handwritten hiring list, and sent me the following file. Among the emigrants aboard the McNab were fifteen families from the Coigach Barony, an area in the Parish of Lochbroom in the County of Ross and Cromarty. Those Highlanders included some ancestors of Hugh, and he has made a study of the the emigration, and of the families once they reached Tasmania.
Hugh's transcription looks good on paper, however presentation on the internet creates technical problems, and in the translation to HTML I have taken a few liberties with the formatting.
Gwen Smith (CONTACT INFO) is another descendant of people on this voyage. She has mailed me a much annotated list of those passengers on the journey whose passage was sponsored by the Highlands and Islands Emigration Society. I am still checking sources, but it seems likely that list originated in Scottish records. The original transcriber, or supplier of the transcription, was most likely Alastair MacLeod (CONTACT INFO), who as well as being a cousin of Gwen, is also the Highland District Council Archives Department Genealogist, but it might have been someone else with access to Scottish records.
That list is complementary to this one, and I have created an HTML file of it at mcnab.htm
Another descendant from the Coigach emigrants aboard the Sir Allan Mcnab is married to Greg Wighton, who is the genealogist of his family (CONTACT INFO). Greg has emailed me an article Hugh Campbell wrote about the emigration twelve years ago, and Hugh has allowed me to post it as a file on the web page as well, see corn.htm
Hugh has added references numbers to the families on this list that correspond with those on Gwen's. I have converted those reference numbers to hypertext links identified by the family numbers given on Gwen's list. This is to allow you to leap back and forth between the two.
So... though the following contains all the info in Hugh's transcription, it is formatted differently. Where I have added notes they are mostly links to other mentions of the family in either another section of this file, or in a different file. To make those additions clearly separate from the transcribed info I have enclosed them in square brackets; [some note]. The entire file was sent in capital letters, any changes in letter case is by me, to conform more closely to other Victorian notes of the age I have read. To save space I have deleted the listing of the sex of each person, where there are disputes with other records I have noted that.
Rather than duplicate the existing notes for families also listed in mcnab.htm I have included links to that file.
A hiring date and employer is given for every person, even the infants, My assumption is that those children with an occupation listed were employees, the rest were simply young children who stayed with their parents.
The file Hugh has created is divided into six sections;

[ Hugh Campbell, the Tasmanian historian who researched and transcribed, and compiled these lists (CONTACT INFO has sent the following note for context of this section. ]
[ 'Exiles' is the euphemism for families of convicts who had applied to have their wives and children sent out to join them after they had served their time. In his report on the arrival of 'McNab', J. D. Lock, the Hobart Immigration Agent, said, 'There appear to be about eight families of exiles, but these are not distinguished in the Ship Lists, and as the people supposed to be such showed a disinclination to give information on the subject, I did not press them to do so'. Very decent, I think, for the times. My own assessment is that the eight are Dwyer, Fowler, Gordon, Heelan, James, Needham, Pace and Wilson. I am not sure about Leckie. The others in this list had employment prearranged. The key seems to be whether or not they went to someone of the same name, without a wage being stated. 'Went to husband' is a dead giveaway. ]

Tracey in Australia who is researching this family informs that the elder "William" should read as "Andrew", likely a mistranscription error by me or less likely in the typescript copy I transcribed this list from. Tracey explains;
"There is a William and a Catherine Hodgins on the list as well that aren't included in the listing however my main interest was Andrew and family. I believe the William and Catherine are single travellers. This would be how the error was made I think William was written above Andrew from memory."

List of Promissory Notes deposited in my hands by the Surgeon of the Emigrant Ship 'Sir Allan McNab'
[ Hugh Campbell in Tasmania (CONTACT INFO), who has researched the Sir Allan McNab emigration through many records sent this list and excerpt of Promissory Notes. His article about the emigration goes into more detail explaining the signifigance of the notes; see corn.htm ]
[ Amounts below are in pounds sterling, with slashes to separate pounds, shillings, and pence. A few of the amounts listings include hapennys, which I have represented as ".5". Similarly, the number of family column includes total, and a total adjusted for children's discount, as they are also divided by slashes I have used .5 rather than 1/2 ]
[ There were 20 shillings to a pound, and 12 pence to a shilling ]
