The enumerated counted 105 people in the 18 households at Altandhu in 1851; 59 males and 46 females.
The households are numbered from 92 to 110, appearing on pages 28 to 33 of Enumeration District 8 for the Parish of Lochbroom. I have identified the households by using a prefix of "51" for the year of the census, and a suffix which is the Schedule number for that household. Unless otherwise noted all the inhabitants were born in the Parish of Lochbroom, Ross Shire.

This Household appears on page 28 of Enumeration District #8. All are marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom, Ross Shire, except John Macrae born in Glensheil Ross Shire.
It looks certain John MacRae was in the southern side of Lochbroom Parish in the 1841 census; there is then a 15-19 year old Schoolmaster John McRae at the home of the Tacksman at Monkastle, James McKenzie.
In the 1841 census Angus Lamont was Schoolmaster, see Altandhu 41-10. No Schoolmaster is listed in the 1861 census, though there was one Household marked "Inmates Absent only on 7th April".
There is an Alexander MacRae at Faochag 51-66 that might be related to these MacRaes, as there was a christening 24 April 1831 at Altandhu of a Catherine MacRae to a father Alexander.
John Macdonald was in the 1841 census at Reiff 41-18, his family is in this census at Reiff 51-87. He is the oldest crofter at Reiff, and perhaps was visiting the Schoolmaster to have a letter or petition translated or written. His descendants include myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross in Canada (CONTACT INFO), and Margaret Ward in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO).
Likely Jane was in the 1841 census at Polglass, see Achiltibuie 41-19 (All Polglass families were enumerated that year as at Achiltibuie), her parents there were Roderick McLeod and Ann McKenzie, in this census her mother is Widowed with other family members at Polglass 51-62. The death of Jane (single) was registered as 14 July, 1860 at Polglass, Informant being her nephew James McLeod.

This family was in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-3. John dies before the 1861 census, (likely before the start of civil registration in 1855), when Ann with two McLean grand-daughters (probably daughters of her daughter Hannah) is at Altandhu 61-24.
There is a possibility John was a grandson of George MacKenzie who was Tacksman of Achnahaird from 1745 till his death in 1795. In November 1768 George signed an obligation to repay to the Commission of Forfeited Estates the cost of the apprenticeship of his son John as a weaver if he did not return to work in Coigach. Apprenticeships most often began in early teens, so that John was probably born sometime 1752-1754. Shortly after that George MacKenzie moved many of his subtenants from the Brae of Achnahaird to Altandhu. Trades such as weaver were often handed down from fathers to sons, such as John above to his own son, and the approximate birth year of 1767-1771 of John above fits as son to the 1768 apprentice. Working against that possible descent is naming patterns in the Altandhu MacKenzie family, no Georges!
John was earlier married to Flora MacLeod, she is noted as mother in the 1862 death registration of their son Donald MacKenzie, who is in this census at Altandhu 51-96. Donald was also a hand loom weaver.
Ann McKenzie above was Maiden Surnamed McLean, as recorded in the wedding registration of her son Angus in 1855 at Torrisdale, Parish of Tongue, SutherlandShire to Angusina MacKay. Her death registration in 1879 shows her parents to have been John McLean and Margaret McLeod.
Hannah is in the 1861 census at Reiff 61-4, as "Hannah McLean". She married a Kenneth McLean, and has a son Kenneth who dies 19 November 1860 aged three and a quarter years. Her husband Kenneth is marked as deceased in their son's death registration.
It is interesting that in the 1861 census Hannah is with the Widow of a Post Runner, Hector McKenzie, and her brother Roderick above was also a Post Runner, likely the two families are related, but I have not discovered how. Johanna's occupation although poorly inscribed was clearly that of a "mantua maker". A mantua was a womans garment, a long piece of cloth folded and wrapped to form a head to foot wrap, see a description on the website at http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=10647 Of course, the occupation as mantua maker was well suited to the daughter of a weaver!
Cannot see Roderick in the 1861 census, the I.G.I. notes the marriage in Lochbroom Parish 2 December, 1858 of Roderick MacKenzie to Catherine MacLeod, and the births of two children to the couple; John, born 30 September, 1859, and Catherine, born 20 November, 1860. The family can be seen in the 1871 census at Altandhu 71-54.
Angus marries in 1855 at Torrisdale, Parish of Tongue, SutherlandShire, to Angusina McKay (b.10 August 1823 at Tongue), the registration says he was a shoemaker born 14 July 1832 at Lochbroom to parents John MacKenzie and Ann MacLean.
A daughter of John, Mary, has died since the last census, her Widowed husband is at Altandhu 51-110.

This family was in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-13, Catherine's husband Roderick MacLeod was already dead by then.
Catherine is in the 1861 census with her son Murdo and his family at Altandhu 61-6.
Catherine was maiden surname MacLean, the OPR records the marriage 20 January 1818 of "Roderick MacLeod Aultandu to Catherine MacLean there".
Also registered were the christenings of three children to Roderick McLeod at Altandhu;
Catherine's Widowed mother Margaret, two of her siblings, and other relatives, are in this census at Altandhu 51-98. Ann MacLean at Altandhu 51-99 is an aunt of Catherine (a sisister of Margaret).

In the 1841 census this family was at Altandhu 41-6, in 1861 they are at Altandhu 61-4.
John's death registration in 1878 "aged 71 years", lists his parents as "Kenneth McLean, wright and crofter", and "Belle", maiden surname MacLeod. Those names correspond with the names of the parents of Duncan McLean at Altandhu 51-97 shown in his own 1875 death registration as Kenneth McLean and Isabella McLeod. The father Kenneth corresponds with "Coinneach Buidhe" a character in the story "An Gobha Leathanach / The Blacksmith MacLean SA1955/160/B3" told in 1955 by Murdo John McLean, a gt-grandson of John. That Kenneth also corresponds with a son of a Duncan MacLean, noted as apprenticed in 1768 as a wright (see NAS E746/91/2/00001). Occupation of Kenneth from the death registration of his daughter Catherine (John's sister, at Altandhu 41-1) is shown as "Carpenter", which corresponds with "wright".
Two other children of Coinneach Buidhe from the 1955 stories were Mairi, who died tragically in 1849, see Altandhu 41-18, and a noted strong man of the community, "Alasdair Mor McLean", who lost his life in battle in India. So, from a number of sources, children of Kenneth McLean ("Coinneach Buidhe") and Isabella MacLeod were;
The IGI lists the christening 29 May, 1855 of a child to this family, Christina, who is in the 1861 census, confirming Flora's maiden surname as "McBeath".

In the 1841 census this family was at Altandhu 41-2, with Rachel listed as "Ronalda". In 1861 they are at Altandhu 61-25.
I think Donald was son of John MacKenzie at Altandhu 51-93, and that Alexander MacLean at Altandhu 51-110 is Widower of his sister Mary.
Rachel dies 1887 at Altandhu as "Ronalda", her parents noted in the Death Registration as having been John MacLean, a Miller, and "Ronalda", Maiden Surname MacLean.
A daughter of this family, Flora, marries in 1854 to Alexander MacLean, who is in this census at Altandhu 51-99, they are in the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-9, mistakedly enumerated as "McLeod"s! (Flora was christened at Altandhu to a father Donald MacKenzie 24 May 1833).
Young John was christened 10 August 1834.
Young Ketty above ("Catherine"), marries a James Stewart, three of their children are with Ketty's mother Rachel in the 1871 census.
A sister of Rachel, Christina, is in this census at Altandhu 51-108, she dies 1868 at Altandhu, the death registration confirms her and Rachel's parents as having been John McLean and Rachel maiden surnamed McLean. Informant on the registration was her nephew Kenneth McKenzie, above.

In the 1841 census this family was at Altandhu 41-5, in 1861 they are at Altandhu 61-3.
In the 1841 census Duncan was married to Catherine MacKenzie from Reiff (not clear which family there), Isabella and Roderick were children of that couple, and "Kett" above was probably named to honour Duncan's first wife. Also in the 1841 census was a 5 year old son John, likely he died young and the John above was named to honour him.
Duncan's death is registered 1875 at Altandhu aged 72 years, his parents noted as having been Kenneth MacLean and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacLeod, Informant his son Kenneth.
Mary was the second wife of Duncan, they married shortly after the 1841 census, her death registration in 1887 says her parents had been John MacLeod and Anne, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
Three christenings to Duncan McLean are in the OPR, the first two would be with his first wife, Catherine MacKenzie, and the third with Mary;

This family was in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-17, in 1861 they are at Altandhu 61-18.
Margaret MacKenzie was a daughter of Murdo MacKenzie and Mary MacLean of Reiff, her death registration in 1855 says her husband had been John MacLean. Three of the seven documented children of that couple married MacLeans! Ann MacLean in the next Household, Altandhu 51-99, is a sister of Margaret who also married a John MacLean at Altandhu! Catherine MacLeod at Altandhu 51-94 is a daughter of Margaret.
Siblings of Margaret besides Anne in the next Household include;
Ann above dies in 1876, her Death Registration notes her parents had been John MacLean and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacKenzie (the Margaret above).
Murdoch and Ann had a brother who died before the 1841 census, where his Widow Mary McLeod and two children were at Altandhu 41-7, Mary has died since then, and her two orphaned sons are with their MacLeod grandfather at Altandhu 51-107. In the 1861 census one of those boys, John, is with his aunt Ann MacLean (above), and Ann's sister Catherine at Altandhu 61-20.

In the 1841 census this family was at Altandhu 41-15, in 1861 John is Widowed, living with the family of his son Alexander at Altandhu 61-9 (see note below).
The Parish Register records the marriage 9 January 1850 of Kenneth McLean of Altandubh to Christian Stewart resident of Polglass, a daughter of Duncan Stewart of Polglass. Chirsty was with her family in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-12 (all the Polglass familys were enumerated as part of Achiltibuie that year). In this census her Widowed mother and several other relatives are at Polglass 51-53.
Kenneth and Chirsty with four children (including Duncan above) are in the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-13.
Alexander marries in 1854 to Flora MacKenzie, a daughter of the family at Altandhu 51-96, they are in the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-9, mistakedly enumerated as "McLeod"s!
Ann MacLean was a daughter of Murdo MacKenzie and Mary MacLean of Reiff, so she has many relatives in Altandhu and Reiff! Three of the seven documented children of that couple married MacLeans! Murdo's death is registered 1877 at Old Dornie, age 94 years, a Widower, the registration says his parents had been John McLean and Rachel, Maiden Surname McLean.
The OPR records the marriage 25 March, 1818 of Murdo MacLean Aultandu to Anabile MacLean Tanary (clearly the Isle Tanera). Annabella's death was registered 1873 at Altandhu, her son John as Informant. Her parents were noted as Kenneth MacLean and Kitt, Maiden Surname Smith.
Also recorded are christenings of four of their children;

Donald above marries 26 January, 1860 at Ullapool to Annie MacLeod, a daughter of John MacLeod and Isabella MacLennan of Reiff, Annie is in this census at Reiff 51-91. They are in the 1861 census at Reiff 61-2 with a daughter, and two of Annie's sisters.
The daughter Mary who is in this census with her sister Catherine's family marries 29 December, 1859 to Murdoch McLeod, who is in this census at Reiff 51-85, in 1861 they are living next to her parents at Altandhu 61-16. It is interesting that his parents were Murdoch MacLeod and Anabella MacLean, and her parents were Murdoch MacLean and Anabella MacLean!
A son of this family, Duncan, marries 15 January, 1857 to Alexandrina Kerr, who is in this census at Reiff 51-74.

The OPR records the marriage 7 March 1816 of Alexander MacLeod Aultandu to Mary MacLean there.
There were seven christenings at Altandhu with Alexander MacLeod listed as father;
Murdo marries shortly after this census to Isabella MacKenzie, they have four children in the 1861 census. Murdo and Isabella were ancestors of Dr.Neil MacLeod in California (CONTACT INFO).
A brother of these siblings, John, married 31 January 1850 to Isabella Kerr, they are in this census at Ristol 51-1, with Isabella's sister Chirsty visiting. John and Isabella later settle at Faochag.

In the 1841 census Kenneth was at Altandhu 41-12, by 1861 Mary is Widowed, living with her young children at Reiff 61-22.
Kenneth was christened 18 August, 1819, and married 30 June 1843 to Mary MacLennan from Reiff. He drowns off Reiff 3 March 1857, aged 36, six months before the birth of the second of his sons named Kenneth.
Mary's christening was registered 10 February 1821 at Reiff, as daughter of the smith John MacLennan, and of Isabella MacKenzie of the large MacKenzie family there, she was with her family in 1841 at Reiff 41-19. The McLennans are in this census at Reiff 51-77.
As well as two brothers with her parents a Reiff, Mary has sister Catherine in the next Household, Altandhu 51-103, and sister Isabella at Reiff 51-91.

Murdo was in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-15 with his parents and siblings, they are in this census at Altandhu 51-99. Catherine was in the 1841 census with her family at Reiff 41-19, they are in this census at Reiff 51-77.
In the 1861 census Murdo and Catherine with six children are at Altandhu 61-22.
Murdo through his mother Ann, and Catherine through her mother Isabella, were first cousins of each other, grandchildren of Murdoch McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, over 1,300 descendants of that couple have been traced by various genealogists!
Catherine's death is registered 1893 at Altandhu, aged 79 years, Widow of Murdo McLean, the registration notes her parents had been John McLennan, Blacksmith, and Isabella, Maiden Surname McKenzie, that couple is in this census at Reiff 51-77.
As well as two brothers with her parents a Reiff, Catherine has sister Mary in the previous Household, Altandhu 51-102, and sister Isabella at Reiff 51-91.
Mary marries 29 December, 1859 to Murdoch McLeod, who is in this census at Reiff 51-85, in 1861 they are living next to her parents at Altandhu 61-16.

Murdo and Catherine, with other relatives including their Widowed father John, were in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-4.
Murdo marries 28 December 1854 to Hughina MacLeod from Polbain, cannot see her in this census, but in 1841 she was with her family at Polbain 41-3. Murdo and Hughina have two children in Coigach, then emigrate to New Zealand where they have six more. They are ancestors of Margaret Ward in N.Z.; CONTACT INFO.
Another sibling, Ann, married 25 June 1850 to Murdo MacKenzie of Reiff, they are in this census at Reiff 51-90.
With these siblings in 1841 was a ten year old Hanna, I think she is in this census as the 23 year old Joanna at Altandhu 51-108, with an aunt Chirsty MacLean.

Birth registration of children to this couple after 1855 list Ann's maiden surname as also "McLean", and the IGI records the marriage 24 December 1846 of John McLean to Ann McLean. Cannot pick Ann out in the 1841 census though!

In the 1841 census with his family was at Altandhu 41-11, by 1861 Ann is Widowed, living with two of her unmarried children at Altandhu 61-5.
The Parish Register records the marriage 8 January, 1817 of Alexander MacLean of Aultandu to Ann MacKenzie, Isle Ruistail, (usually spelt "Ristol"). Also in the Register is the christening 17 November, 1819 of William to father Alexander. Cannot see William in this census, but in 1861 he is with his mother.
Young Alex dies unmarried 29 January, 1858 at Altandhu aged 33 (Informant was his brother William), and Ann dies 13 October, 1878 aged 95, her parents listed as having been Alexander McKenzie and Mary Ross, with her son Kenneth as Informant.

In the 1841 census this family was at Culnacraig 41-3, Murdoch's wife, Margaret Munro, was still alive then. In 1861 the family is at Achiltibuie 61-19.
Murdoch, Roderick, Barbara, and Alexander are ancestors of Kate Ferris who lives on the Isle of Lewis (CONTACT INFO). Kate has provided lots of info on this family!
Kate passes on details from Murdoch's death registration and other research she has done;
Murdoch above was born about 1772 at Strathpolly as a son of Roderick McLeod and Catherine McLeod there, and died 11 February 1855 at Altandhu after living five years there, his wife had been Margaret Munro. Children of Murdoch and Margaret were;
Barbara's death was registered as happening 25 August 1867 at Old Dornie, the registration lists her parents as having been Roderick MacLeod and Mary Graham, and lists her husband Roderick then as a "Tacksman".
Kate lists the children of Roderick and Barbara as;
Alexander marries 10 February 1870 to Margaret "Peggy" MacKenzie, who is in this census with her family at Achiltibuie 51-95.
The two grandsons, John and Roderick McLean, were with their Widowed mother Mary in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-7, and are orphaned in this census. Mary's fathers death registration notes that Mary died in 1842 aged 33. I wonder if this Household in 1851 is living in the same home that Mary was in 1841? In the 1861 census John is with two of his aunts (sisters of his father) at Altandhu 61-20, one of those aunts, Ann MacLean, is in this census at Altandhu 51-98.

Chirsty was in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-8, and is in the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-19.
Joanna was I think the 10 year old Hanna in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-4, the father of that girl has died since then, but three other of his children, siblings of Joanna, are in this census at Altandhu 51-104. Another sister, Ann, married 25 June 1850 to Murdo MacKenzie of Reiff, they are in this census at Reiff 51-90.
Christina dies at Altandhu 24 April 1868 age listed as 79 years. The death registration lists her parents as having been John McLean and Rachel maiden surnamed McLean. Informant on the reg was her nephew Kenneth McKenzie, that Kenneth is in this census at Altandhu 51-96, his mother Rachel is a sister of Christina.

In the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-1 Catherine's husband John was Head of Household, and there were four other children.
Catherine's son Kenneth marries 28 December, 1854 to Janet MacLeod, Catherine is with them, their daughter, and two other of her sons at Altandhu 61-12.
The Parish Register includes the marriage January 1825 of John McLean to Catherine McLean, both resident Altandhu, and also the christenings of three of their children;
Catherine's 1866 death registration notes her late husband John as a Carpenter, and her parents as having been Kenneth McLean, also a carpenter, and Isabella, maiden surname McLeod. The father Kenneth corresponds with "Coinneach Buidhe" a character in the story "An Gobha Leathanach / The Blacksmith MacLean SA1955/160/B3" told in 1955 by Murdo John McLean, a gt-grandson of Catherine's brother John. That Kenneth also corresponds with a son of a Duncan MacLean, noted in 1768 as apprenticed as a wright (see NAS E746/91/2/00001). The occupation "Carpenter" corresponds with "wright". So, from a number of sources, children of Kenneth McLean ("Coinneach Buidhe") and Isabella MacLeod were;

In the 1841 census this family was at Altandhu 41-14, Alexander's first wife, Mary MacKenzie was alive then. (Mary's Widowed father and other relatives are in this census at Altandhu 51-93, and Donald MacKenzie at Altandhu 51-96 was her brother).
Alexander's death is registered 1876 at Altandhu, the Registration says his parents had been Donald MacLean, Carpenter, and Chirsty, Maiden Surnamed MacLean.
Alexander remarries shortly after this census, 3 July 1851, to Isabella McLean who was in the 1841 census at Altandhu 41-12, they are in the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-14. Alexander and Isabella are ancestors of Simon Gunn in Scotland; CONTACT INFO.
Catherine marries 17 January 1861 to Allan MacLean who is in this census with his family at Achduart 51-6. In the 1861 census the couple is at Achduart 61-5, next to Allans Widowed mother and his siblings.
Alexander has two sisters in this census; Catherine at Reiff 51-89 has death registration noting her parents had been Donald McLean, Boat Carpenter, and Christina, Maiden Surname McLean. Annabella McLeod at Reiff 51-85 has parents noted as having been Donald McLean, Carpenter, and Chirsty, Maiden Surname McLean.
