In the 1861 census this family was at Altandhu 61-6, in 1881 they are at Altandhu 81-32. The 1881 census says Mary was from Glenshiel, Ross.

Murdo dies 1884 at Altandhu, the death registration notes Mary's Maiden Surname was MacRae, and Murdo's parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Catherine, Maiden Surname MacLeod. Based on the 1818 marriage record I think the Maiden Surname for Catherine, "Ketty" above, was "MacLean", not "MacLeod".

The birth of Roderick "Rory" was registered 14 April, 1858 at Glenshiel to parents Murdo McLeod and Mary MacRae.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 9, Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at Ross Shire.

In the 1861 census this family was at Altandhu 61-12. Young Rory was in that census with his MacLeod grandparents at Badenscallie 61-2. In 1881 Kenneth and Janet with their sons John and Angus are at Altandhu 81-37.

There is a memorial stone at Badenscallie burial ground referring to this family erected by a nephew, Roderick MacLean, after Kenneth's name it has "Boy" in brackets, implying he was blonde or yellowish hair, "buidh" being Gaelic for the colour "yellow". It notes Kenneth died November, 1899 aged 72, and wife Janet maiden surnamed MacLeod died 9 October, 1893 aged 63 years. Also on the stone are noted two other people, likely brothers of Kenneth; Hugh MacLean died March 1900 at Achnahaird aged 72, and Donald MacLean died March 1907 aged 77.

In the 1861 census this family was at Altandhu 61-13, in 1881 they are at Altandhu 81-38.

The Parish Register records the marriage 9 January, 1850 of Kenneth McLean of Altandubh to Christian Stewart resident of Polglass, a daughter of Duncan Stewart of Polglass. Chirsty was with her family in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-12 (all the Polglass familys were enumerated as part of Achiltibuie that year). In this census her Widowed mother two siblings, and other relatives are at Polglass 71-48, and Alexander Stewart at Polglass 71-47 is a brother.

Kenneth's father John, brother Alexander, and other relatives were in the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-9, Alexander with family is in this census at Altandhu 71-43. John McLean at Altandhu 71-44, and Murdo McLean at Altandhu 71-53 are also brothers.

Kenneth through his mother Ann was a grandson of Murdoch McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, over 1,300 descendants of that couple have been traced by various genealogists!

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on pages 9 and 10, Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at Ross Shire.

In the 1861 census this family was at Altandhu 61-15. In 1881 young Murdo and Mary with their two children are at Altandhu 81-40.

Murdo's death is registered as 19 February, 1877 at Old Dornie, age 94 years, a Widower. Though Informant of the death was his son John there were no people surnamed MacLean at Dornie in the 1871 or 1881 censuses, possibly a daughter of his was married to someone there. The registration says his parents had been John McLean and Rachel, Maiden Surname McLean.

Annabella's death was registered as 20 February, 1873 at Altandhu, aged 72 years, her son John as Informant. Her parents were noted as Kenneth MacLean and Kitt, Maiden Surname Smith.

Murdoch was listed in the christening of one of his children in 1830, and in the 1851 census, with occupation as "Miller".

The OPR records the marriage 25 March, 1818 of Murdo MacLean Aultandu to Anabile MacLean Tanary (clearly the Isle Tanera). Though Anabella is recorded as resident on Tanera at time of her wedding, she is also recorded in the 1851 census as born in the parish of Lochs, Isle of Lewis, Ross Shire.

The IGI records the marriage 7 March, 1867 of Murdoch MacLean at Ullapool to Mary McLean, with his parents as Murdoch MacLean and Anabella MacLean. Also registered as born to Murdoch McLean and Mary McLean are;

A son of Murdo and Annabella, Donald, married 26 January, 1860 at Ullapool to Annie MacLeod, a daughter of John MacLeod and Isabella MacLennan of Reiff. They are in this census in the next Household at Altandhu 71-48.

A daughter of Murdo and Annabella, Mary, was in the 1861 census with her husband, Murdoch MacLeod, at Altandhu 61-16. No further sign of them after the birth of their son Murdoch 5 March, 1862, probably they emigrated.

A son of Murdo and Annabella, Duncan, is with his wife and family in this census at Reiff 71-62. Another son, Kenneth, is with his wife Sarah Shaw and six children at Polbain 71-27.

John    do             Son                 3

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10, Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at Ross Shire.

In the 1861 census this family was at Reiff 61-2. In 1881 they are at Altandhu 81-41.

The births of four children to Donald McLean and Ann McLeod are mentionned in the I.G.I.;

  1. Ann, born 21 November, 1860,
  2. Donald, born 13 September, 1862,
  3. John, born 8 December, 1864,
  4. John, born 9 April, 1867 (earlier John died young?).

Donald's parents and other relatives are in this census in the previous Household at Altandhu 71-47. A sister, Mary, was in the 1861 census with her husband, Murdoch MacLeod, at Altandhu 61-16. No further sign of them after the birth of their son Murdoch 5 March, 1862, probably they emigrated.

A brother of Donald, Duncan, is with his wife and family in this census at Reiff 71-62. Another brother, Kenneth, is with his wife Sarah Shaw and six children at Polbain 71-27.

Ann's mother Isabella McLeod, along with four of her siblings, are in this census at Reiff 71-56.

Altandhu 71-49

Mary McLean Head W 68 Pauper

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10, Enumeration District #2. Mary marked as born at Ross Shire.

Though noted above as born in Ross Shire, other records, including the 1861 census at Altandhu 61-7, suggest she was born in neighbouring Assynt Parish, SutherlandShire.

Her death is registered as 23 September, 1879 at Altandhu aged about 80 years, her parents having been Roderick McKenzie, a crofter, and his wife Ellen McLeod, the Informant John McLean is noted as "son of the sister of deceased's husband".

Altandhu 71-50

Cathrine MacLean Head Unm 71 Pauper

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10, Enumeration District #2. Cathrine marked as born at Ross Shire.

Cannot clearly see Catherine in earlier censuses, but from her death registration it is clear her parents are in this census at Altandhu 71-47, and possibly she was the servant girl in 1841 at Tanera 41-5. Though the age noted above does not match, I think this is likely the Catherine McLean in the 1881 census at Altandhu 81-39.

Catherine dies 1910 at Altandhu, aged 86 years, Informant of the death was her nephew, Alexander McLean. The registration notes her parents had been Murdo McLean and Annabella, Maiden Surname McLean.

The death of Murdo is registered as 9 July, 1880 at Altandhu, Christina still alive then noted with maiden surname also McLean, his parents noted as having been John McLean and Margaret, maiden surname MacKenzie.

The death of Christina is registered as 5 April, 1892 at Altandhu, her parents noted as having been John McLean and Ann, maiden surname Graham, Informant her son Alexander.

There is a few memorial stone at Badenscallie burial ground that gives some details on this family;

Civil registration and other sources provides a few more details on descent from this family;

Ann above dies 2 February, 1876, she was a sister of Murdo, who was Informant on her Death Registration, it confirms their parents had been John MacLean and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 11, Enumeration District #2. All marked as born in RossShire, except Ann listed as SutherlandShire, she is also listed as Deaf and Blind.

Cannot see Roderick and Catherine in the 1861 census, though in 1851 he was with his family, occupation as "Post Runner" at Altandhu 51-93.

The I.G.I. notes the marriage in Lochbroom Parish 2 December, 1858 of Roderick MacKenzie to Catherine MacLeod, and the births of two children to the couple; John, born 30 September, 1859, and Catherine, born 20 November, 1860 (the "Ketty" above).

Catherine's death is registered as 27 February, 1876 at Altandhu, husband Roderick the Informant. Her parents noted as Donald MacLeod and Catherine, Maiden Surname MacLeod. Catherine and her parents have not been identified in earlier Coigach censuses, likely they were from some other part of the Parish.
