Annotated Census ExtractsAlex lived his life in Coigach, and shows up in most of the 19th century censuses starting 1841 as a two year old at Culnacraig 41-3, through to 1881, though away from home in 1891 at Achnahaird 91-4. His gt-granddaughter, Kate Ferris, (CONTACT INFO), sent this photo and lots of details on the life he led. These files include transcripts of each decennial census from 1841 to 1891, enriched by notes from descendants such as Kate, information in histories, Parish and Civil Registration. Through hypertext links between Households and succeeding censuses you can track relationships. Far from a complete project, any assistance is appreciated! | |

Most of the notes in this file originated in emails or letters from other people with roots in Coigach. I have collected email addresses and websites of those people in a file; CONTACTS AND SOURCES

The following communities are in the north-west area of Coigach, roughly described as that part of the peninsula "beyond the big rock". It is focus of the files on this website, though historically Coigach continued sout-west including Ullapool to Glen Achall.
The following communities are in the south-east area of Coigach. Historically this area was always part of the Barony of Coigach, though today it is more common to consider Coigach as that part of the peninsula "beyond the big rock". Though the files in this website concentrate on the other part, there was much intermarriage between the families, and so I am slowly adding more data here.

Achadh' a Bhraigh is a small community, never more than a handful of households on the south side of Coigach, its nearest neighbors are at Acheninver on the coast, and at Badenscallie, just to the north-west. Modern maps shorten its gaelic name to "Achvraie".
Murdoch Campbell 30 Crofter Rodk. do. 3 Jane do. 25 Mary do. 15Notes on this Household:
This Household is on Page 4 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achdavray". All listed as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-18. Jane is "Janet" then and in later censuses. The 1871 census says he was from Badenscallie, and she was from Achadh' a Bhraigh.
Murdoch and Mary were children of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart of Badenscallie. Their Widowed mother and six of their siblings are in this census at Badenscallie 41-23. In the 1851 census Mary is unmarried, with her mother and four siblings at Badenscallie 51-41.
Donald Campbell at Achiltibuie 41-13 is a brother of Murdoch and Mary.

Lachlin is in the 1851 census with his family at Polglass 51-58. His occupation then is given as "Singing Master"!
Angus marries 5 February 1852 to Annabella McLean. Annabella is in this census at Achduart 41-3. By time of the 1861 census they are living at Achduart with three children; see Achduart 61-1.

This Household is on Page 4 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achdavray". All listed as born in County.
This family is in the 1851 census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-19 with four children.
The 1871 census listing for this family shows John was born at Inverpolly, and Margaret at Dornie (John's death registration gives Margaret's maiden surname as McLeod).
John testifies in 1862 in a case between the government and the Cromartie family regarding salmon fishing in Coigach. His age given then is 66, which agrees with his death registered as 2 April 1873 aged 77. The death registration lists his parents as Alexander McLeod and Peggie McLeod, Informant was his son Alexander.
The 1862 testimony says his father was joint tenant of the lands of Inverpolly direct from the Cromartie family, and tenant for seven or eight years of the salmon fishings on the River Polly from Captain Kenneth MacKenzie, a tenant of Cromartie till about 1809. The testimony has the father and family moving to Badenscallie in 1814. A brother of John, Alexander, settled there, and can be seen in this census with his family at Badenscallie 41-1.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-1. In 1861 the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated at Acheninver, this family appears there at Acheninver 61-3.
The 1871 census shows that Murdo was born at Badenscallie, and Janet at Achadh' a Bhraigh.
Murdo was a son of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart of Badenscallie. In this census his Widowed mother and five siblings are at Badenscallie 51-41, Donald Campbell, the missing husband at Polglass 51-55, is another brother, and Catharine McLeod at Polglass 51-65 is another sister.

In the 1861 census Barbara was with her Grant family at Acheninver 61-5. Her family is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95.
The civil registration index shows the marriage of Roderick Campbell to Barbara Grant 14 February 1867, the birth of William 7 January 1868, and Angus 16 September 1869.
James Grant at Badenscallie 71-84 was a brother of Barbara.

Mary's relationship to the Head of Household was listed as Nephew, then crossed out with a different handwriting putting "Niece" in the marital condition column, which seems to have been left blank till then.
I think Catherine was a sister of Margaret McLeod in the next Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-93, both are marked as born at Dornie, and Mary corresponds with a daughter of Margaret and her husband John in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-2.

In 1861 the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver, this family was then at Acheninver 61-2.
By 1881 Margaret is Widowed, living with her daughter Ann at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-3, Alexander is then married to Jane (?) and living in the next Household at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-4.
John testified in 1862 in a case between the government and the Cromartie family regarding salmon fishing in Coigach. His age given then is 66, which agrees with his age above and his death registered as 2 April 1873 aged 77. I think Margaret was a sister of Catherine McLeod in the previous Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-92, both are marked as born at Dornie, and the niece of Catherine, Mary, corresponds with a daughter of Margaret and John in the 1861 census.

In the 1881 census Murdo and Janet (as "Jessie") are at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-2.
Young Murdo marries 9 January 1873 to Ann McKenzie, they are with three children in the Household next to his parents at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-1.
Murdo's mother Mary and four siblings are in this census at Badenscallie 71-69, Catherine McLeod at Polglass 71-46, and Donald Campbell at Polglass 71-43 are his siblings.

This Household is on Page 20 of Enumeration District 1. Community in this census spelled as "Achbhrae". All marked as born at Coigach, except James, for whom no ditto marks or other place were filled in!
Though listed as the last Household in Achadh' a Bhraigh, other censuses include this family in the neighboring community of Acheninver; I think the enumerator was uncertain where to place the family, rather than a case of the family moving back and forth.
In the 1861 census this family was at Acheninver 61-5 with Catherine's then living husband, William (a Miller) as Head of Household. In the 1881 census they are at Acheninver 81-4.
A son of Catherine named James Grant is in this census with his second wife at Badenscallie 71-84. Young James above was a son of that James, born 22 October 1859. He was in the 1861 census with his father and mother at Acheninver 61-4.

Murdo's mother Mary died since the last census, but he does have five siblings at Badenscallie 81-23, Catherine MacLeod at Polglass 81-15, and Donald Campbell at Polglass 81-2 are also siblings.

Margret's husband John died 2 April 1873 aged listed as 77, his death registration lists her maiden surname as also McLeod.
I think Margret was a sister of Cathrine McLeod two Households away at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-5.

Jane's Maiden Surname was MacLean, noted in the 18 September, 1893 death of a six day old child.
I think Cathrine McLeod in the next Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-5, was a sister of Alexander's mother.
Cathrine McLeod Head Unm. 74 PauperNotes on this Household:
This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 1. Community in this census spelled as "Achavrae". Cathrine is marked as born at Lochbroom.
In the 1871 census Cathrine was at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-92 with an unmarried niece Mary McLeod.
I think Cathrine was a sister of Margret McLeod two Households away at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-3, and Alexander in the previous Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-4, was a nephew.
Achduart was a small community of seven households on the south side of Coigach, its nearest neighbors are at Culnacraig, and at Achnancarnian.
I cannot find any reference to the english meaning of the name Achduart, but in 1820 records it was spelled Achdubhaird, which closely translates as; field at the dark promontory.
Other christenings at Achduart in the Parish Register include;
Simon McLeod 20 Crofter Donald do. 15 Allan do. 10 Roderick do. 2 Isabella do. 40 Katharine do. 14 Cursty do. 8 Murdoch do. 4 monthsNotes on this Household:
All born in RossShire.
In the 1851 census this family is at Achduart 51-5.
I think Isabella is a widow in this census, there is a tablestone inscription in the Badenscallie burial ground that says Roderick McLeod of Achduart died 13 May 1836 aged 37, the same stone lists Simon above as his son, and says Simon died 28 February 1855 aged 34. By time of the next census Isabella has remarried, to a Donald McLeod. Possibly at time of this census she has already remarried, given the age of the two youngest children above....
The 1851 and later censuses suggest that young Allan above was named Alexander; probably I have mistranscribed it here.
I think young Donald above is in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-6.
I suspect this family is related to the family in the next Household (Achduart 41-2). Young Margaret Robertson there marries Neil McLeod and names one of her sons Simon the same year Simon above dies.
Isabella was an ancestor of Heather Munsel through young Roderick above. Roderick marries Isabella MacKenzie at Ullapool in 1867, and dies in 1899.
There are three christenings in the Parish Register at Achduart to a father named Roderick, that are probably siblings of Simon above;
Roderick MacRae 35 Crofter William do. 9 Mary do. 7 Isabella do. 4 Katharine Robertson 20 Margaret do. 15 Mary do. 14 Jannet do 13 Margt McLeod 45 Mary 55Notes on this Household:
All born in RossShire. No ditto or different surname given for the third Mary, so I assume it to be McLeod.
This family is in the 1851 census at Achduart 51-9. Margaret McLeod there is shown to be wife of Roderick. She was widow of William Robertson, and it looks like she and Roderick named one of their sons to honour her first husband.
The Parish Register includes the marriage 1 February, 1820 of William Robertson of Badinscally to Margaret McLeod of Culnacraig. Also listed are the christening at Achduart to William Robertson of the following children;
Margaret Robertson marries 23 March, 1848 to Neil MacLeod, who is in this census at Achnahaird 41-7, they are still living with this family in the next census. Margaret names one of her children Simon, and so I suspect she is related to the MacLeods in the previous Household (Achduart 41-1), which also has a Simon MacLeod as son.
Janet "Jessie" Robertson marries 18 January, 1849 to Donald Fraser of Achiltibuie. Donald is in this census at Achiltibuie 41-31 with six of his siblings. In the 1851 census Donald and Janet (with two of Donald's then unmarried brothers) are at Achiltibuie 51-77.
Roderick's death is registered as 1873 at Achduart, the registration confirms Margaret as Maiden Surname MacLeod, notes he was a Catechist, and notes his parents had been William McRae, Catechist, and Esabella, Maiden Surname also McRae.
Kenneth McLean 45 Crofter Murdoch do. 20 John do. 20 Allan do. 15 Alexander do. 5 Annabella do 14 Cursty do 8 Janet do 45Notes on this Household:
All born in RossShire.
In 1851 this family is at Achduart 51-6.
Kenneth and Janet ("Jane") were gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, through their son Murdoch. Before George's recent death he provided lots of info from his research on this family, George will be greatly missed! I have contact info for his son, also named George, but genealogy is not his own hobby.
Among info George discovered was Kenneth's death registration 28 May 1855. It says Kenneth was born about 1797 at Inverpolly to parents John MacLean and Christine MacLeod, he moved to Achduart about 1815 and lived there the rest of his life.
Janet is I think the "Jane MacKenzie" of Badenscalie who married 6 April 1818 to Kenneth MacLean there.
Jane's Widowed father Allan McKenie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5. Isabella Stewart at Badenscallie 41-14, and Ann McLeod at Badenscallie 41-24 are also sisters of Jane, they all named one of their sons Allan. The sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Ann and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.
Murdoch with occupation listed as "Labourer" marries 2 March 1848 to Mary Campbell resident at Acheninver, daughter of Evander Campbell, Miller there. Mary is in this census with her family at Achnancarian 41-1 (Mary's father married second to Flora McLeod of Reiff, sister of a gt-gt-grandmother of myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross; CONTACT INFO). In the 1851 census Murdoch and Mary with children and relatives are at Achnancarian 51-10.
Annabella does not show up with her parents in the 1851 census. She marries 5 February 1852 to Angus McLeod, who is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-2. They are in Achduart in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-1.
John's christening to father Kenneth McLean was registered 8 January 1821 at Achduairt. He marries 19 February 1863 to Mary McLeod of Achiltibuie. That Mary was a sister of Alexander MacLeod, a gt-grandfather of Kate Ferris who now lives on Lewis (CONTACT INFO). Mary and Alexander with their parents and other relatives are in this census at Culnacraig 41-3.
Katharine McKenzie 40 Crofter John do. 13Notes on this Household:
Both born in RossShire. Though John's age was written in the column for females, I think it likely he was a male and it was a mistake not caught by the enumerator, and carried on down to the bottom of the page where totals were made.

Kenneth and Jean ("Jane" or "Janet" in some records) are gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, (CONTACT INFO), through their son Murdoch. George has provided lots of info on this family, including details from Kenneth's death registration 28 May 1855. Kenneth was born about 1797 at Inverpolly to parents John MacLean and Christine MacLeod, he moved to Achduart about 1815 and lived there the rest of his life.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achduart 41-2. In the 1871 census William and Catherine are at Achduart 71-102.
Though Roderick and Catherine are not at Achduart in the 1871 census, they were probably still residents, as Roderick dies there 1873. His Death Registration notes Margaret had been Maiden Surname MacLeod, and his parents had been another William MacRae, and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacRae. Interesting that registration notes both Roderick and his father William had been Catechists.
Margaret was married first to William Robertson, and it looks like she and Roderick named one of their sons to honour her first husband. The Parish Register includes the marriage 1 February, 1820 of William Robertson of Badinscally to Margaret McLeod of Culnacraig. With this family in the 1841 census with this family were several Robertson children from her first marriage.
I.G.I. has marriage of William McRae to Catherine McLeod 21 March, 1861, shortly before this census! This is shown to be the correct couple, as also listed are the births of five matching children to that couple.

In the 1851 census this family was at Achduart 51-6. In 1871 they are at Achduart 71-104, Jane is still alive then, though she seems to age two decades in the next ten years!
Jane's husband was Kenneth MacLean, their marriage registration 6 April 1818 says her maiden surname was McKenzie, and they were both resident at Badenscallie. Though they seem to have been at Achduart at least since 8 January 1821 when John was christened, and the 1871 census says Jane was born at Strathcanaird.
Kenneth and Jane ("Jean" or "Janet" in some records) are gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, (CONTACT INFO), through their son Murdoch. George has provided lots of info on this family, including details from Kenneth's death registration 28 May 1855. Kenneth was born about 1797 at Inverpolly to parents John MacLean and Christine MacLeod, he moved to Achduart about 1815 and lived there the rest of his life.
The son Murdoch with occupation listed as "Labourer" married 2 March 1848 to Mary Campbell resident at Acheninver, daughter of Evander Campbell, Miller there. In this census Murdoch and Mary with children and relatives are at Acheninver 61-12.
Allan McLean in the next Household (Achduart 61-5) is another son of Jane, possibly a small house on the same lot? Allan married a few months before this census, 17 January 1861 to Catharine, also surnamed McLean!
Anabella MacLeod at Achduart 61-1 is another child of Jane.
The christening of John above to father Kenneth McLean was registered 8 January 1821 at Achduairt. John marries 19 February 1863 to Mary McLeod of Achiltibuie at Ullapool. In the 1881 census John and Mary are at Achduart 81-4 with seven children. That Mary was a sister of Alexander MacLeod, a gt-grandfather of Kate Ferris who now lives on Lewis (CONTACT INFO). John MacKenzie Head Widr 46 Subtenant of 1 Acre. Bell Do. Daur. 4 Catharine McKenzie Serv. 19 House Serv.Notes on this Household:
This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 7. No community name was listed by the enumerator, but from earlier and later censuses I am sure this is Acheninver! All are marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom.
Likely John in the 1841 census was at Achiltibuie 41-42.
I think the first marriage of John is listed in the Parish Register 23 March, 1846 as "John McKenzie Achultibuie and Sibla McKenzie, Badinscally, Coigach". John later names a daughter with his second wife as "Sibla".
John is in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-6. He is married then. Based on his children's birth registrations his second wife was Catharine McKenzie. The I.G.I. lists the marriage 8 June 1853 of John McKenzie to Catharine McKenzie, I think John married his Housekeeper!
John dies 1874, his Death Registration notes his parents had been parents had been Alexander MacKenzie and Annabella MacLean.
I wonder if the Widow Margaret McKenzie in the next Household (Acheninver 51-15) was a relative of mother of John or Bell, living in a humble cottage on their lot?

Colin Campbell Head Mar 80 Chelsea Pensioner Martha Do. Wife Mar 66Notes on this Household:
This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 7. No community name was listed by the enumerator, but from earlier and later censuses I am sure this is Acheninver. Colin marked as born in the Parish of Gairloch (south of Lochbroom), and Martha as born in Ireland.
In the 1841 census this couple was at Acheninver 41-4.
Chelsea Pensioner meant Colin had served in the military, and was receiving some pension for wounds suffered.
Jenny Self (CONTACT INFO), is descended from the Colin Campbell at Acheninver 51-13. Jenny and I think it likely the couple above were parents of that Colin.
Jenny has recently acquired a copy of Colin's discharge papers after 20 years with the 71st Regiment, her transcription of that document and some notes on it are at; colin.htm
Both this census, and Colin's Discharge Papers, say he was born in the Parish of Gairloch bordering Lochbroom to the south. Evander Campbell in the neighbouring hamlet at Achnancarnian 51-11 was also from Gairloch... possibly related, but as yet undocumented.

In the 1841 census this family was at Acheninver 41-1. In the 1861 census they are enumerated at Acheninver 61-5.
William's death is registered 1863 at Acheninver, aged 72 years, married to Catherine Fraser. His parents had been John Grant, a Private in the 73rd Regiment, and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
The Parish Register includes the marriage 5 January, 1819 of William Grant Ullapool Boat Carpenter to Cathrine Fraser Morchoille.
James marries 27 December 1855 to "Betsy" McLeod, they are in the 1861 census in the Household before his parents at Acheninver 61-4. A son of James and Betsy, also named James, is with his grandmother in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.
Donald is witness to the marriage of Isabella Campbell of Acheninver in 1863, see transcription of registration in notes at Acheninver 51-3.
I think young Alexander's age at 18 must be mistranscribed! In the 1841 census he was listed as 3 years old, in the 1861 census at Culnacraig 61-5 he is listed as 23 years old. He marries 29 March, 1860 to Christina McLeod, who is in the 1861 census with him, civil registration records no children to that couple.

In this census the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver, in 1851 this family was enumerated at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-19.
This family is in the 1871 census at Achadh'a Bhraigh 71-93. That census shows John was born at Inverpolly, and Margaret at Dornie (John's death registration gives Margaret's maiden surname as McLeod).
A brother of John, Alexander, settled there, and can be seen in this census with his family at Badenscallie 61-19.
Jilly Wilson (CONTACT INFO) is descended from the Reiff McLennan family. Jilly says Alexander was known as "Sandy", and that he married Jane McLean of Altandhu (a McLennan descendant) 13 March 1879. Included on her webpage are excerpts of information she has compiled from earlier family researchers, including the following about Jane and Sandy;
Jane couldn't speak a word of English and Sandy had just a scattering, yet their family did very well at school. Kirsty Bain, Jane's sister who lived in Rief used to brag about Jane's children. On one occasion she was bragging to a neighbor (Maggie Ross - Simon MacLeod's wife) that her sister Jane's daughter could write two letters while the kettle was coming to the boil on the fire - to which Maggie replied 'they must have had damn bad hearths'.
Sandy had a horse and cart and he earned a little money every summer carting the salmon catch from the station at Badentarbet where they had an ice house. The salmon fishing were let to a man named Rae, a southerner without a trace of Gaelic, but he loved to tease Sandy to hear his 'quaint' English. On one occasion, he suggested to Sandy he should keep a pig 'Ah yes, Mr Rae', Sandy replied, 'but you know a pig is a very costing/expensive animal'[K. MacLeod 1967]
"Rae" is I think the John Rae, Sheep Manager, in this census at Inverpolly 61-1.
Sandy's father John McLeod had been born at Strathpolly about 1796, and likely the family lost it's tenancy there when it was converted to a sheep farm rented to southern shepherds such as Rae. From the jesting back and forth it looks like there was no resentment.

Murdo was a son of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart of Badenscallie, his Widowed mother and four siblings are in this census at Polglass 61-28. He also has a sister Catherine McLeod at Polglass 61-13, and a brother Donald Campbell at Polglass 61-10.
Ann was with her mother and some siblings in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-41, in 1871 she is with them at Badenscallie 71-69. I suspect Ann was enumerated twice, as there is a 56 year old daughter Ann with her mother at Polglass 61-28. I also think young Flora was enumerated twice, and is also the 10 year old Flora at Polglass 61-10 as a daughter of Murdo's brother Donald Campbell.

Young James above is with his Grant grandmother in the 1871 census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95, and again in the 1881 census.
I think James first wife Betsy died either in childbirth of their daughter Betsy, or shortly after, as James marries second to Margaret McLeod 7 December 1865.

William's death is registered as 16 September, 1863 at Acheninver, aged 72 years, married to Catherine Fraser. Informant of the death was his son John, his parents had been John Grant, a Private in the 73rd Regiment, and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

W. Geoff Johnston (CONTACT INFO) is a descendant of William and Catherine through their son Donald above. Geoff has provided the following info;
Donald Grant was born 9 June 1843 at Badenscallie, the Parish Register records his christening a month later, 9 July, 1843, same day a large number of Coigach children were christened, probably a big event.
Donald marries 29 February, 1872 to Ann Morrison at Badcall. Ann was a daughter of Roderick Morrison, a shoemaker at Ullapool for 30 years, and Mary (or "May") McKenzie.
By time of the 1881 census Ann and Donald have moved into Castle Street (now Terrace) in Ullapool and are recorded in the
1881 census there;
Donald Grant Head Mar 39 Cattle Dealer
Ann Grant (Morrison) Wife Mar 30
The next record of them Geoff has found was on the Valuation rolls of 1888/9 as living on the old curing station on Isle Martin, paying 10 shillings per annum rent.
The 1891 census has a daughter of Donald and Ann visiting the home of her Morrison grandparents at Ullapool;
Roderick Morrison Head Mar 74

After this time Geoff relys on family history to say that Ann died soon after the turn of the 20th century and the family then moved to Inverness and then south to the Scottish Borders.
