Alexander MacLeod

Coigach

Annotated Census Extracts

Alexander MacLeod with his game bag and gun stands ready to help you hunt for your ancestors through the 19th century census records of Coigach!

Alex lived his life in Coigach, and shows up in most of the 19th century censuses starting 1841 as a two year old at Culnacraig 41-3, through to 1881, though away from home in 1891 at Achnahaird 91-4. His gt-granddaughter, Kate Ferris, (CONTACT INFO), sent this photo and lots of details on the life he led.

These files include transcripts of each decennial census from 1841 to 1891, enriched by notes from descendants such as Kate, information in histories, Parish and Civil Registration. Through hypertext links between Households and succeeding censuses you can track relationships. Far from a complete project, any assistance is appreciated!

Most of the notes in this file originated in emails or letters from other people with roots in Coigach. I have collected email addresses and websites of those people in a file; CONTACTS AND SOURCES

The following communities are in the north-west area of Coigach, roughly described as that part of the peninsula "beyond the big rock". It is focus of the files on this website, though historically Coigach continued sout-west including Ullapool to Glen Achall.

Achadh' a Bhraigh Achduart Acheninver Achiltibuie
Achlochan Achnahaird Achnancarnian Altandhu
Badenscallie Badentarbet Cammasnancarrian (see Achnancarnian) Camuscoille
Camusglassellan (see Reiff) Clais (Shepherd Station) Culnacraig Dornie
Faochag (see Reiff) In a Boat Inverpolly (Shepherd Station) Isle Martin
Lineranich (Shepherd Station) Little Altandow (See Achnahaird) Polbain Polglass
Reiff Rhegreanoch (Shepherd Station) Ristol Sheniskaig (Shepherd Station)
Tanera

The following communities are in the south-east area of Coigach. Historically this area was always part of the Barony of Coigach, though today it is more common to consider Coigach as that part of the peninsula "beyond the big rock". Though the files in this website concentrate on the other part, there was much intermarriage between the families, and so I am slowly adding more data here.

Achadh' a Bhraigh

Achadh' a Bhraigh is a small community, never more than a handful of households on the south side of Coigach, its nearest neighbors are at Acheninver on the coast, and at Badenscallie, just to the north-west. Modern maps shorten its gaelic name to "Achvraie".

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 4 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achdavray". All listed as born in County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-18. Jane is "Janet" then and in later censuses. The 1871 census says he was from Badenscallie, and she was from Achadh' a Bhraigh.

Murdoch and Mary were children of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart of Badenscallie. Their Widowed mother and six of their siblings are in this census at Badenscallie 41-23. In the 1851 census Mary is unmarried, with her mother and four siblings at Badenscallie 51-41.

Donald Campbell at Achiltibuie 41-13 is a brother of Murdoch and Mary.

Angus, John, and Catharine are in the 1851 census with a nephew and neice at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-20, that census shows the three are siblings.

Lachlin is in the 1851 census with his family at Polglass 51-58. His occupation then is given as "Singing Master"!

Angus marries 5 February 1852 to Annabella McLean. Annabella is in this census at Achduart 41-3. By time of the 1861 census they are living at Achduart with three children; see Achduart 61-1.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 4 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achdavray". All listed as born in County.

This family is in the 1851 census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-19 with four children.

The 1871 census listing for this family shows John was born at Inverpolly, and Margaret at Dornie (John's death registration gives Margaret's maiden surname as McLeod).

John testifies in 1862 in a case between the government and the Cromartie family regarding salmon fishing in Coigach. His age given then is 66, which agrees with his death registered as 2 April 1873 aged 77. The death registration lists his parents as Alexander McLeod and Peggie McLeod, Informant was his son Alexander.

The 1862 testimony says his father was joint tenant of the lands of Inverpolly direct from the Cromartie family, and tenant for seven or eight years of the salmon fishings on the River Polly from Captain Kenneth MacKenzie, a tenant of Cromartie till about 1809. The testimony has the father and family moving to Badenscallie in 1814. A brother of John, Alexander, settled there, and can be seen in this census with his family at Badenscallie 41-1.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 6 of Enumeration District 7. Community in this census not named, but from earlier and later censuses it is certainly Achadh' a Bhraigh. All marked as born at Lochbroom.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-1. In 1861 the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated at Acheninver, this family appears there at Acheninver 61-3.

The 1871 census shows that Murdo was born at Badenscallie, and Janet at Achadh' a Bhraigh.

Murdo was a son of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart of Badenscallie. In this census his Widowed mother and five siblings are at Badenscallie 51-41, Donald Campbell, the missing husband at Polglass 51-55, is another brother, and Catharine McLeod at Polglass 51-65 is another sister.

In the 1861 census Barbara was with her Grant family at Acheninver 61-5. Her family is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95.

The civil registration index shows the marriage of Roderick Campbell to Barbara Grant 14 February 1867, the birth of William 7 January 1868, and Angus 16 September 1869.

James Grant at Badenscallie 71-84 was a brother of Barbara.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 20 of Enumeration District 1. Community in this census spelled as "Achbhrae". Catherine marked as born at Dornie, and Mary at Achbhrae.

Mary's relationship to the Head of Household was listed as Nephew, then crossed out with a different handwriting putting "Niece" in the marital condition column, which seems to have been left blank till then.

I think Catherine was a sister of Margaret McLeod in the next Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-93, both are marked as born at Dornie, and Mary corresponds with a daughter of Margaret and her husband John in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-2.

In 1861 the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver, this family was then at Acheninver 61-2.

By 1881 Margaret is Widowed, living with her daughter Ann at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-3, Alexander is then married to Jane (?) and living in the next Household at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-4.

John testified in 1862 in a case between the government and the Cromartie family regarding salmon fishing in Coigach. His age given then is 66, which agrees with his age above and his death registered as 2 April 1873 aged 77. Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 20 of Enumeration District 1. Community in this census spelled as "Achbhrae". All marked as born at Coigach, except James, for whom no ditto marks or other place were filled in!

Though listed as the last Household in Achadh' a Bhraigh, other censuses include this family in the neighboring community of Acheninver; I think the enumerator was uncertain where to place the family, rather than a case of the family moving back and forth.

In the 1861 census this family was at Acheninver 61-5 with Catherine's then living husband, William (a Miller) as Head of Household. In the 1881 census they are at Acheninver 81-4.

A son of Catherine named James Grant is in this census with his second wife at Badenscallie 71-84. Young James above was a son of that James, born 22 October 1859. He was in the 1861 census with his father and mother at Acheninver 61-4.

A daughter of Catharine, Barbara, married 14 February 1867 to Roderick Campbell, and is living four households away at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-91.

In the 1871 census Murdo with his parents and two sisters was at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-94, in this census his parents are in the next Household at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-2.

The Civil Registration Index records the marriage 9 January 1873 of Murdo Campbell to Ann McKenzie, and the birth of Angus to that couple 11 October 1873.

In the 1871 census Murdo and Jessie (as "Janet") were at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-94. Their son Murdo married in 1873 to Ann McKenzie and is in this census in the previous Household at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-1.

Murdo's mother Mary died since the last census, but he does have five siblings at Badenscallie 81-23, Catherine MacLeod at Polglass 81-15, and Donald Campbell at Polglass 81-2 are also siblings.

In the 1871 census these two were at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-93 with Margaret's then living husband John as Head of Household. With them then was also a son Alexander, who has since married, and is in this census as Head of the next Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-4.

Margret's husband John died 2 April 1873 aged listed as 77, his death registration lists her maiden surname as also McLeod.

I think Margret was a sister of Cathrine McLeod two Households away at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-5.

In the 1871 census Alexander was with his parents and sister at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-93, his Widowed mother and his sister are in this census in the previous Household at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-3.

Jane's Maiden Surname was MacLean, noted in the 18 September, 1893 death of a six day old child.

I think Cathrine McLeod in the next Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-5, was a sister of Alexander's mother.

Notes on this Household:

In the 1871 census Cathrine was at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-92 with an unmarried niece Mary McLeod.

I think Cathrine was a sister of Margret McLeod two Households away at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-3, and Alexander in the previous Household, Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-4, was a nephew.

Achduart

Achduart was a small community of seven households on the south side of Coigach, its nearest neighbors are at Culnacraig, and at Achnancarnian.

I cannot find any reference to the english meaning of the name Achduart, but in 1820 records it was spelled Achdubhaird, which closely translates as; field at the dark promontory.

Other christenings at Achduart in the Parish Register include;

Achduart 41-1

Murdoch   do.                          4 months
Notes on this Household:

All born in RossShire.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achduart 51-5.

I think Isabella is a widow in this census, there is a tablestone inscription in the Badenscallie burial ground that says Roderick McLeod of Achduart died 13 May 1836 aged 37, the same stone lists Simon above as his son, and says Simon died 28 February 1855 aged 34. By time of the next census Isabella has remarried, to a Donald McLeod. Possibly at time of this census she has already remarried, given the age of the two youngest children above....

The 1851 and later censuses suggest that young Allan above was named Alexander; probably I have mistranscribed it here.

I think young Donald above is in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-6.

I suspect this family is related to the family in the next Household (Achduart 41-2). Young Margaret Robertson there marries Neil McLeod and names one of her sons Simon the same year Simon above dies.

Isabella was an ancestor of Heather Munsel through young Roderick above. Roderick marries Isabella MacKenzie at Ullapool in 1867, and dies in 1899.

There are three christenings in the Parish Register at Achduart to a father named Roderick, that are probably siblings of Simon above;

Notes on this Household:

All born in RossShire. No ditto or different surname given for the third Mary, so I assume it to be McLeod.

This family is in the 1851 census at Achduart 51-9. Margaret McLeod there is shown to be wife of Roderick. She was widow of William Robertson, and it looks like she and Roderick named one of their sons to honour her first husband.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 1 February, 1820 of William Robertson of Badinscally to Margaret McLeod of Culnacraig. Also listed are the christening at Achduart to William Robertson of the following children;

  1. Donald, christened 26 April, 1822,
  2. Margaret, christened 20 December, 1823,
  3. Mary, christened 22 November 1825,
  4. Janet, christened 21 June 1827.

Margaret Robertson marries 23 March, 1848 to Neil MacLeod, who is in this census at Achnahaird 41-7, they are still living with this family in the next census. Margaret names one of her children Simon, and so I suspect she is related to the MacLeods in the previous Household (Achduart 41-1), which also has a Simon MacLeod as son.

Janet "Jessie" Robertson marries 18 January, 1849 to Donald Fraser of Achiltibuie. Donald is in this census at Achiltibuie 41-31 with six of his siblings. In the 1851 census Donald and Janet (with two of Donald's then unmarried brothers) are at Achiltibuie 51-77.

Roderick's death is registered as 1873 at Achduart, the registration confirms Margaret as Maiden Surname MacLeod, notes he was a Catechist, and notes his parents had been William McRae, Catechist, and Esabella, Maiden Surname also McRae.

Notes on this Household:

All born in RossShire.

In 1851 this family is at Achduart 51-6.

Kenneth and Janet ("Jane") were gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, through their son Murdoch. Before George's recent death he provided lots of info from his research on this family, George will be greatly missed! I have contact info for his son, also named George, but genealogy is not his own hobby.

Among info George discovered was Kenneth's death registration 28 May 1855. It says Kenneth was born about 1797 at Inverpolly to parents John MacLean and Christine MacLeod, he moved to Achduart about 1815 and lived there the rest of his life.

Janet is I think the "Jane MacKenzie" of Badenscalie who married 6 April 1818 to Kenneth MacLean there.

Jane's Widowed father Allan McKenie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5. Isabella Stewart at Badenscallie 41-14, and Ann McLeod at Badenscallie 41-24 are also sisters of Jane, they all named one of their sons Allan. The sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Ann and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.

Murdoch with occupation listed as "Labourer" marries 2 March 1848 to Mary Campbell resident at Acheninver, daughter of Evander Campbell, Miller there. Mary is in this census with her family at Achnancarian 41-1 (Mary's father married second to Flora McLeod of Reiff, sister of a gt-gt-grandmother of myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross; CONTACT INFO). In the 1851 census Murdoch and Mary with children and relatives are at Achnancarian 51-10.

Annabella does not show up with her parents in the 1851 census. She marries 5 February 1852 to Angus McLeod, who is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-2. They are in Achduart in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-1.

John's christening to father Kenneth McLean was registered 8 January 1821 at Achduairt. He marries 19 February 1863 to Mary McLeod of Achiltibuie. That Mary was a sister of Alexander MacLeod, a gt-grandfather of Kate Ferris who now lives on Lewis (CONTACT INFO). Mary and Alexander with their parents and other relatives are in this census at Culnacraig 41-3.

Notes on this Household:

Both born in RossShire. Though John's age was written in the column for females, I think it likely he was a male and it was a mistake not caught by the enumerator, and carried on down to the bottom of the page where totals were made.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achduart 41-1. In 1861 they are at Achduart 61-7.

Isabella's maiden surname was Stewart.

Donald and Isabella were ancestors of Heather Munsel through their son Roderick above, who married Isabella MacKenzie at Ullapool in 1867, and who died in 1899.

In 1841 this family was at Achduart 41-3, In 1861 they are at Achduart 61-4.

Jean is I think the "Jane MacKenzie" of Badenscalie who married 6 April 1818 to Kenneth MacLean there.

Kenneth and Jean ("Jane" or "Janet" in some records) are gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, (CONTACT INFO), through their son Murdoch. George has provided lots of info on this family, including details from Kenneth's death registration 28 May 1855. Allan above marries 17 January 1861 to Catharine, also surnamed McLean! Catharine is in this census with her family at Altandhu 51-110. In the 1861 census Allan and Catharine are living next to Allan's mother and siblings at Achduart 61-5.

A daughter of Kenneth and Jean named Annabella is not here with the family in 1851. Annabella marries 5 February 1852 to Angus McLeod, who is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-20. Annabella and Angus are in Achduart in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-1.

A son of Kenneth and Jean named John is also not here in this census. The Stewart Household just previous (Achduart 51-7), includes two other Tinsmiths, probably partners of John.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Pages 3 and 4 of Enumeration District 7. No community name was listed by the enumerator, but from earlier and latercensuses I am sure this is Achduart. All are marked as born in Lochbroom.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achduart 41-2. In 1861 they are at Achduart 61-2 with William married to a woman named Catherine.

Neil McLeod, a Tenant at Achnahaird, married 23 March, 1848 to Margaret Robertson of Achduart, daughter of William Robertson there. Neil was in the 1841 census with his family at Achnahaird 41-7.

Neil and Margaret raise their family at Achnahaird, they are in the next census at Achnahaird 61-2. In this census Neil's Widowed father and other relatives are at Achnahaird 51-54.

Roderick's death is registered as 1873 at Achduart, the registration confirms Margaret as Maiden Surname MacLeod, notes he was a Catechist, and notes his parents had been William McRae, Catechist, and Esabella, Maiden Surname also McRae.

Angus and Anabella married 5 February 1852. The I.G.I. lists six children born to this couple;

  1. Kenneth, born 6 October, 1855,
  2. unnamed male, born 7 August, 1857, died 15 August, 1857,
  3. Murdoch, born 28 August, 1858,

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 21 of Enumeration District 6. Roderick and Catherine listed as born at Assynt, the rest born at Coigach.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achduart 41-2. In the 1871 census William and Catherine are at Achduart 71-102.

Though Roderick and Catherine are not at Achduart in the 1871 census, they were probably still residents, as Roderick dies there 1873. His Death Registration notes Margaret had been Maiden Surname MacLeod, and his parents had been another William MacRae, and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacRae. Interesting that registration notes both Roderick and his father William had been Catechists.

Margaret was married first to William Robertson, and it looks like she and Roderick named one of their sons to honour her first husband. The Parish Register includes the marriage 1 February, 1820 of William Robertson of Badinscally to Margaret McLeod of Culnacraig. With this family in the 1841 census with this family were several Robertson children from her first marriage.

I.G.I. has marriage of William McRae to Catherine McLeod 21 March, 1861, shortly before this census! This is shown to be the correct couple, as also listed are the births of five matching children to that couple.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 21 of Enumeration District 6. All listed as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Achduart 51-6. In 1871 they are at Achduart 71-104, Jane is still alive then, though she seems to age two decades in the next ten years!

Jane's husband was Kenneth MacLean, their marriage registration 6 April 1818 says her maiden surname was McKenzie, and they were both resident at Badenscallie. Though they seem to have been at Achduart at least since 8 January 1821 when John was christened, and the 1871 census says Jane was born at Strathcanaird.

Kenneth and Jane ("Jean" or "Janet" in some records) are gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, (CONTACT INFO), through their son Murdoch. George has provided lots of info on this family, including details from Kenneth's death registration 28 May 1855. Kenneth was born about 1797 at Inverpolly to parents John MacLean and Christine MacLeod, he moved to Achduart about 1815 and lived there the rest of his life.

The son Murdoch with occupation listed as "Labourer" married 2 March 1848 to Mary Campbell resident at Acheninver, daughter of Evander Campbell, Miller there. In this census Murdoch and Mary with children and relatives are at Acheninver 61-12.

Allan McLean in the next Household (Achduart 61-5) is another son of Jane, possibly a small house on the same lot? Allan married a few months before this census, 17 January 1861 to Catharine, also surnamed McLean!

Anabella MacLeod at Achduart 61-1 is another child of Jane.

The christening of John above to father Kenneth McLean was registered 8 January 1821 at Achduairt. John marries 19 February 1863 to Mary McLeod of Achiltibuie at Ullapool. In the 1881 census John and Mary are at Achduart 81-4 with seven children. That Mary was a sister of Alexander MacLeod, a gt-grandfather of Kate Ferris who now lives on Lewis (CONTACT INFO). Mary and Alexander with their parents and other relatives were in the 1841 census at Culnacraig 41-3.

This Household is on Page 21 of Enumeration District 6. Both listed as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census Allan was at Achduart 51-6, in 1871 he and Catharine are at Achduart 71-103 with four children.

Allan's father Kenneth has died since the 1841 census, but his mother Jane, and three siblings are in the previous Household, Achduart 61-4. One of his sisters, Anabella, is married to Angus MacLeod, and living a few households away at Achduart 61-1.

Allan and Catherine were married a few months before this census, 17 January 1861, and I wonder if they were living in a cottage on his mother's lot? Catherine was a McLean from Altandhu, she was in the 1851 census with her family at Altandhu 51-110.

Though Donald is listed as 28, I think there was a transcription error at some point, and his age should read 38, as he was 15 to 19 years old in the 1841 census at Achduart 41-1, and this family in the 1871 census at Achduart 71-105 list his age then as 47

The death of Jane is registered as 1887 at Achduart, aged 67 years, married to Donald McLeod, Weaver. Her parents are noted as having been Neil McLeod, Farmer, and Catherine, Maiden Surname Matheson. She can be seen with her family as a child at North Kenachulish 41-1.

The I.G.I. lists the marriage 24 November, 1852 of Donald McLeod to Jane McLeod. Also listed are the births of several of their children;

  1. Roderick, born 4 August, 1855,
  2. Catherine, born 15 September, 1857,
  3. Neil, born 21 August, 1859,

In the 1851 census this family was at Achduart 51-5. In 1871 they are at Achduart 71-106, that listing says Donald was born at Dornie, and Margaret at Shiniscaig.

Donald and Isabella were ancestors of Heather Munsel through their son Roderick above, who married Isabella MacKenzie at Ullapool in 1867, and who died in 1899. In the 1871 census Roderick and Isabella are living next to his parents at Achduart 71-107.

Donald in the previous Household at Achduart 61-6 is also a son of this Household.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 22 of Enumeration District #1. All are marked as born at Achduart, except Ann McLeod at "Riff".

In the 1861 census this family was at Achduart 61-2, with William's parents. In the 1881 census William and Catherine with 6 children are at Achduart 81-6.

I.G.I. has marriage of William McRae to Catherine McLeod 21 March, 1861, also listed are the births of five children to this couple;

  1. Neil born 15 June, 1864,
  2. Margaret born 25 June, 1866,
  3. Roderick born 18 July, 1868,
  4. Catherine born 18 April, 1870,
  5. Angus born 24 April, 1874.

William's father Roderick dies 21 June, 1873 at Achduart, cannot see him in this census, but in 1861 William's family was with Roderick and his wife. William as Informant of Roderick's Death Registration notes his mother Margaret had been Maiden Surname MacLeod, and Roderick's parents had been another William MacRae, and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacRae. Interesting that registration notes both Roderick and his father William had been Catechists.

Not certain if Ann McLeod is related to the McRaes. She was in the 1861 census at Reiff 61-25.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 22 of Enumeration District #1. All are marked as born at Achduart, except Catherine at Altandow, and Rachel McLeod on Isle Ristol.

Allan and Catharine were in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-5. In 1881 they are at Achduart 81-5 with nine children!

Allan McLean married 17 January 1861 to Catharine, also surnamed McLean! Catherine was a McLean from Altandhu, she was in the 1851 census there with her family at Altandhu 51-110.

Allan's mother, Jane, is in the next Household, the home of his brother John, see Achduart 71-104.

In the 1861 census Rachel McLeod was with her family at Ristol 61-2, the family is in this census at Faochag 71-79. Her father John MacLeod was from Altandhu, I wonder if there was some relationship to Catherine McLean above?

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 23 of Enumeration District #1. John, Kenneth, and Isabella marked as born at Achduart, Mary and Margaret at Achiltibuie, and Jane at Strathcanaird.

This family was in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-4, with Jane's age then listed as 60! In the 1881 census John and Mary are at Achduart 81-4 with seven children.

Jane dies 27 April, 1873 at Achduart, "age 81 years", Informant her son Allan. The registration says her parents had been Allan McKenzie, Miller, and Annabella, Maiden Surname McKenzie.

Jane's husband noted in her death registration had been Kenneth MacLean, their marriage registration 6 April, 1818 confirms her maiden surname was McKenzie, and they were both resident then at Badenscallie. Though they seem to have been at Achduart at least since 8 January 1821 when John was christened, and this census says Jane was born at Strathcanaird.

The son of Kenneth and Jane named Murdoch that George descends from with occupation listed as "Labourer" married 2 March, 1848 to Mary Campbell resident at Acheninver, daughter of Evander Campbell, Miller there. In this census Murdoch has died, but Mary with five children is at Achnancarnan 71-101.

John and Mary married 19 February 1863, Mary was a McLeod from Ullapool.

Allan McLean in the previous Household (Achduart 71-103) is another son of Jane, clearly named for her father, possibly a small house on the same lot?

A daughter of Jane named Anabella married Angus MacLeod and was in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-1, but I cannot see them in this census.

The christening of John above to father Kenneth McLean was registered 8 January, 1821 at Achduairt. John married 19 February, 1863 to Mary McLeod of Achiltibuie at Ullapool. Mary was a sister of Alexander MacLeod, a gt-grandfather of Kate Ferris who now lives on Lewis (CONTACT INFO). Mary and Alexander with their parents and other relatives were in the 1841 census at Culnacraig 41-3.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 23 of Enumeration District #1. Jane marked as born at Kanchilish RossShire, the others at Achduart.

This family was in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-6. The 1881 census two of the children are at Achduart 81-3, but the parents are then visiting a Stewart family at Polglass 81-8 (I think the wife in that Household, Cathrine Stewart, is a sister of Donald).

The I.G.I. lists the marriage 24 November, 1852 of Donald McLeod to Jane McLeod. Also listed are the births of several of their children;

  1. Roderick, born 4 August, 1855,
  2. Catherine, born 15 September, 1857,
  3. Neil, born 21 August, 1859,
  4. Simon, born 15 July, 1861,

  6. Isabella, born 27 August, 1866,
  7. Alexanderina, born 9 August, 1870,
  8. Alexander, born 21 February, 1873.

The next Household at Achduart 71-106 has Donald's parents and some other relatives.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 23 of Enumeration District #1. Donald marked as born at Dornie, Isabella at Shiniscaig, Murdo and Christina at Achduart, Roderick Campbell at Achninver, and Roderick McLeod at Plocton, Lochalsh.

This family was in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-7. In 1881 they are at Achduart 81-2, Isabella died between the two censuses.

Donald and Isabella were ancestors of Heather Munsel through their son Roderick who married Isabella MacKenzie at Ullapool in 1867, and who died in 1899. Roderick and Isabella are in the next Household at Achduart 71-107.

Donald McLeod in the previous Household, Achduart 71-105, is also a son of Donald and Isabella.

Young Roderick Campbell ("Rory" in 1861) is a son of Murdoch Campbell and Catherine McLeod at Acheninver 71-97. Catherine was born at Dornie like her brother Donald above.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 23 of Enumeration District #1. Roderick marked as born at Coigach, Isabella as at Badinscally, and John at Achduart.

Roderick was in the 1861 census at Achduart 61-7, along with his parents who are in this census at the previous Household, Achduart 71-106. Roderick and Isabella are in the 1881 census at Achduart 81-1.

Roderick and Isabella were ancestors of Heather Munsel. Heather says Roderick died in 1899.

Isabella was marked as a MacKenzie from Ullapool when she and Roderick married in 1867, though this census says she was born at Badinscally.

Notes on this Household:

All born at Lochbroom.

Roderick and Isabella were in the 1871 census at Achduart 71-107.

Roderick's Widowed father Donald is in the next Household at Achduart 81-2.

Young Bella marries Neil MacLeod from Culnacraig in 1900. Neil is in the 1881 census with his grandparents at Culnacraig 81-1. Bella and Neil lived at Achiltibuie, where they had two children before emigrating to Montana in 1906 where they had two more, including the grandmother of Heather Munsel who still lives in Montana.

Margaret marries a MacKenzie, and had four sons at Achduart.

One of the brothers of Roderick, Donald, is away from Achduart this census, but two of his children are at Achduart 81-3. That Donald, with his wife Jane is visiting a Stewart family at Polglass 81-8 (I think the wife there, Cathrine Stewart, was a sister of Donald, and of course Roderick above).

Notes on this Household:

All born at Lochbroom. Though Mary is marked as "Daur", I think she was wife of Murdo, and actually Daughter in Law of Donald, the Head of Household.

In the 1871 census Donald, his since dead wife Isabella, and several relatives were at Achduart 71-106.

Young "Heneratta" above, as "Henny", has death registered a few months after this census, 25 October, 1881, the death registration notes her mother Mary, above, was Maiden Surname MacLean.

Roderick in the previous Household, Achduart 81-1, is a son of Donald. Donald is an ancestor of Heather Munsel in Montana through Roderick.

Another son of Donald, also named Donald, has two of his children in the next Household, Achduart 81-3, though he and his wife are away visiting a Stewart family at Polglass 81-8, I think the wife there, Cathrine Stewart, was a sister of Donald., a daughter of the Widower Donald McLeod Head of this Household.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 2 of Enumeration District 1. Both are marked as born at Lochbroom. See following notes that explain why no Head of Household is listed.

These two are children of Donald and Janet "Jane" McLeod. The missing parents are in this census at Polglass 81-8 visiting a Stewart family, I think the wife there, Cathrine Stewart, was a sister of Donald. In the 1871 census Donald and Jane with five children were at Achduart 71-105.

The I.G.I. lists the marriage 24 November 1852 of Donald McLeod to Jane McLeod. Also listed are the births of several of their children;

  1. Roderick, b.4 August 1855
  2. Catherine, b.15 September 1857
  3. Neil, b.18 August 1859
  4. Simon, b.15 July 1861
  5. Neil, b.21 October 1863
  6. Isabella, b.27 August 1866
  7. Alexanderina, b.9 August 1870
  8. Alexander, b.21 February 1873

Parents of the missing Donald McLeod were another Donald, and Isabella Stewart. Isabella has died since the last census when that family was at Achduart 71-106, but father Donald and several of his siblings are in the previous Household at Achduart 81-2.

A brother of the missing Donald is Roderick, an ancestor of Heather Munsel in Montana. Roderick is two households away at Achduart 81-1.

Mary was a MacLeod. The I.G.I. gives birth registrations of the first four children above, all with her maiden surname as "McLeod".

According to the I.G.I., births of the first four children above were registered as;

  1. Kenneth b.31 January 1864

William and Catherine were in the 1871 census at Achduart 71-102.

I.G.I. has marriage of William McRae to Catherine McLeod 21 March 1861. Also listed are births of five of their children (including an earlier Margaret);

  1. Neil b.15 June 1864

Acheninver

Acheninver was a small community with rarely more than a few crofts. It was on the coast of Horse Sound, just below the equally small village of Achadh' a Bhraigh.

Other christenings at Acheninver in the Register include;

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 4 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achninver". All listed as born in County.

In 1851 this family is at Acheninver 51-17.

William's death is registered 1863 at Acheninver, aged 72 years, married to Catherine Fraser. His parents had been John Grant, a Private in the 73rd Regiment, and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 5 January, 1819 of William Grant Ullapool Boat Carpenter to Cathrine Fraser Morchoille.

This family was earlier in Badenscallie, several of the children in later censuses are in Households there, and the Parish Register records the christening of John to William Grant at Badenscallie 10 August, 1829.

Mary marries 25 February, 1847 to Angus McLeod (see Badenscallie 41-6), they are in the 1851 census with his family at Badenscallie 51-25.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achninver". All listed as born in County.

In 1851 this family is at Acheninver 51-12.

I think this couple are the same ones whose marriage was registered 9 August 1822 "Murdo Campbell Badintarbet to Cathrine Stewart Achiltibuie".

Parish Register also records the christening 22 November 1825 at Badenscally of John Campbell to a father Murdo.

John marries 24 February 1859 to Ann Stewart from Achiltibuie, she is in this census with her family at Achiltibuie 41-40.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achninver". All listed as born in County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Acheninver 51-13.

Colin and Wilhilmina are ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO). Jenny says Wilhilmina's maiden surname was MacKenzie.

Jenny and I think it is likely the Colin above is son of Colin and Martha Campbell in the next Household; Acheninver 41-4, she has obtained a copy of the discharge papers of that Colin showing his recruitment to the 71st Regiment in 1797, and Jenny hopes to find where the Regiment was stationed in 1799-1800 when Colin above was born.

Isabella ("Bell" above), is the child of Colin and Wilhilmina through which Jenny is descended. She marries 15 January 1863 to Murdoch McKenzie from Polbain (see Polbain 41-12), then emigrates to Australia.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 12. Community in this census spelled as "Achninver". Colin is marked as born in County, Martha born in Ireland.

In the 1851 census at Acheninver 51-16 this couple appears at with Colins's occupation more fully described as "Chelsea Pensioner", meaning Colin was a military veteran.

Jenny Self (CONTACT INFO), is descended from the Colin Campbell in the previous Household at Acheninver 41-3. Jenny and I think it likely the couple above were parents of that Colin. Jenny has recently acquired a copy of Colin's discharge papers after 20 years with the 71st Regiment, her transcription of that document and some notes on it are at; colin.htm

Both the 1851 census, and Colin's Discharge Papers, say he was born in the Parish of Gairloch bordering Lochbroom to the south. Evander Campbell in the neighbouring hamlet at Achnancarnian 41-1 was also from Gairloch... possibly related, but as yet undocumented.

In 1841 this family was at Acheninver 41-2.

John marries 24 February 1859 to Ann Stewart from Achiltibuie, who is in this census at Achiltibuie 51-83. They are in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-11.

In the 1841 census this family was at Acheninver 41-3. By 1861 Williamina is widowed, and living with three children at Acheninver 61-9.

I think it likely Colin's parents are the couple at Acheninver 51-16.

Colin and Wilhelmina are ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO). Jenny says Wilhelmina's maiden surname was MacKenzie.

Isabella ("Bell" above), is the child of Colin and Wilhelmina through which Jenny is descended. She marries 15 January 1863 to Murdoch McKenzie from Polbain (see Polbain 51-36), then emigrates to Australia.

Jenny has transcribed the registration of Isabella's marriage to Murdo McKenzie of Polbain 15 January 1863;

Murdoch McKenzie, fisherman bachelor aged 30 from Polbain Coigach, married Isabella Campbell aged 23 from Achinver Coigach. Witnesses Donald Grant and Murdoch McLeod. Murdoch's parents were John KcKenzie tenant and Isabella McKenzie maiden surname McKenzie. Isabella's parents were Colin Campbell tailer and tenant (deceased) and Williamina Campbell maiden surname McKenzie. signed by G. McLeod Minister of the Free Church of Scotland Lochbroom and the registrar was Murdo McLeay.

The witness Donald Grant is in this census at Acheninver 51-17.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District 7. No community name was listed by the enumerator, but from earlier and later censuses I am sure this is Acheninver! All are marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom.

Likely John in the 1841 census was at Achiltibuie 41-42.

I think the first marriage of John is listed in the Parish Register 23 March, 1846 as "John McKenzie Achultibuie and Sibla McKenzie, Badinscally, Coigach". John later names a daughter with his second wife as "Sibla".

John is in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-6. He is married then. Based on his children's birth registrations his second wife was Catharine McKenzie. The I.G.I. lists the marriage 8 June 1853 of John McKenzie to Catharine McKenzie, I think John married his Housekeeper!

John dies 1874, his Death Registration notes his parents had been parents had been Alexander MacKenzie and Annabella MacLean.

I wonder if the Widow Margaret McKenzie in the next Household (Acheninver 51-15) was a relative of mother of John or Bell, living in a humble cottage on their lot?

In the 1841 census this couple was at Acheninver 41-4.

Chelsea Pensioner meant Colin had served in the military, and was receiving some pension for wounds suffered.

Jenny Self (CONTACT INFO), is descended from the Colin Campbell at Acheninver 51-13. Jenny and I think it likely the couple above were parents of that Colin.

Jenny has recently acquired a copy of Colin's discharge papers after 20 years with the 71st Regiment, her transcription of that document and some notes on it are at; colin.htm

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Pages 5 and 6 of Enumeration District 7. No community name was listed by the enumerator, but from earlier and later censuses I am sure this is Acheninver. The occupation for John was scrawled in later with different handwriting.

In the 1841 census this family was at Acheninver 41-1. In the 1861 census they are enumerated at Acheninver 61-5.

James marries 27 December 1855 to "Betsy" McLeod, they are in the 1861 census in the Household before his parents at Acheninver 61-4. A son of James and Betsy, also named James, is with his grandmother in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

Donald is witness to the marriage of Isabella Campbell of Acheninver in 1863, see transcription of registration in notes at Acheninver 51-3.

I think young Alexander's age at 18 must be mistranscribed! In the 1841 census he was listed as 3 years old, in the 1861 census at Culnacraig 61-5 he is listed as 23 years old. He marries 29 March, 1860 to Christina McLeod, who is in the 1861 census with him, civil registration records no children to that couple.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 19 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Coigach.

In this census the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver, in 1851 this family was enumerated at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-19.

This family is in the 1871 census at Achadh'a Bhraigh 71-93. That census shows John was born at Inverpolly, and Margaret at Dornie (John's death registration gives Margaret's maiden surname as McLeod).

A brother of John, Alexander, settled there, and can be seen in this census with his family at Badenscallie 61-19.

Jilly Wilson (CONTACT INFO) is descended from the Reiff McLennan family. Jilly says Alexander was known as "Sandy", and that he married Jane McLean of Altandhu (a McLennan descendant) 13 March 1879. Included on her webpage are excerpts of information she has compiled from earlier family researchers, including the following about Jane and Sandy;

Jane couldn't speak a word of English and Sandy had just a scattering, yet their family did very well at school. Kirsty Bain, Jane's sister who lived in Rief used to brag about Jane's children. On one occasion she was bragging to a neighbor (Maggie Ross - Simon MacLeod's wife) that her sister Jane's daughter could write two letters while the kettle was coming to the boil on the fire - to which Maggie replied 'they must have had damn bad hearths'.

Sandy had a horse and cart and he earned a little money every summer carting the salmon catch from the station at Badentarbet where they had an ice house. The salmon fishing were let to a man named Rae, a southerner without a trace of Gaelic, but he loved to tease Sandy to hear his 'quaint' English. On one occasion, he suggested to Sandy he should keep a pig 'Ah yes, Mr Rae', Sandy replied, 'but you know a pig is a very costing/expensive animal'
[K. MacLeod 1967]

"Rae" is I think the John Rae, Sheep Manager, in this census at Inverpolly 61-1.

Sandy's father John McLeod had been born at Strathpolly about 1796, and likely the family lost it's tenancy there when it was converted to a sheep farm rented to southern shepherds such as Rae. From the jesting back and forth it looks like there was no resentment.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 19 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Lochbroom.

In this census the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver, in 1851 this family was enumerated at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-18. In 1871 they are at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-94 (that census shows that Murdo was born at Badenscallie, and Janet at Achadh' a Bhraigh).

Murdo was a son of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart of Badenscallie, his Widowed mother and four siblings are in this census at Polglass 61-28. He also has a sister Catherine McLeod at Polglass 61-13, and a brother Donald Campbell at Polglass 61-10.

Ann was with her mother and some siblings in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-41, in 1871 she is with them at Badenscallie 71-69. I suspect Ann was enumerated twice, as there is a 56 year old daughter Ann with her mother at Polglass 61-28. I also think young Flora was enumerated twice, and is also the 10 year old Flora at Polglass 61-10 as a daughter of Murdo's brother Donald Campbell.

James was in his parents home in the 1851 census at Acheninver 51-17, they are now in the next Household at Acheninver 61-5.

James with a second wife and four children is in the 1871 census at Badenscallie 71-84.

James married 27 December 1855 to "Betsy" McLeod. The civil registration index records the births of four of their children;

  1. Margaret b.5 February 1858
  2. James b.22 October 1859
  3. Margaret b.7 November 1861
  4. Betsy b.22 July 1864

Young James above is with his Grant grandmother in the 1871 census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95, and again in the 1881 census.

I think James first wife Betsy died either in childbirth of their daughter Betsy, or shortly after, as James marries second to Margaret McLeod 7 December 1865.

Births of four of James and Margaret's children are in the Civil Registration index;

  1. Janet b.15 December 1866
  2. William b.28 January 1868
  3. John b.5 August 1869
  4. John b.16 February 1873

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 19 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Acheninver 51-17.

In the 1871 census this family is enumerated at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95, but in 1881 is again enumerated in Acheninver at Acheninver 81-4. They are neighboring communities, and I think rather than moving back and forth, it was a case of the enumerators being unsure where to place a rural household.

William's death is registered as 16 September, 1863 at Acheninver, aged 72 years, married to Catherine Fraser. Informant of the death was his son John, his parents had been John Grant, a Private in the 73rd Regiment, and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 5 January, 1819 of William Grant Ullapool Boat Carpenter to Cathrine Fraser Morchoille.

James Grant in the previous Household, Acheninver 61-4, is a son of William and Catherine, young James there is with his Grant grandparents in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

Young Barbara marries 14 February 1867 to Roderick Campbell, and is in the 1871 census with two young children at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-91.

Donald is witness to the marriage of Isabella Campbell of Acheninver in 1863, see transcription of registration in notes at Acheninver 61-9.

W. Geoff Johnston (CONTACT INFO) is a descendant of William and Catherine through their son Donald above. Geoff has provided the following info;

Donald Grant was born 9 June 1843 at Badenscallie, the Parish Register records his christening a month later, 9 July, 1843, same day a large number of Coigach children were christened, probably a big event.

Donald marries 29 February, 1872 to Ann Morrison at Badcall. Ann was a daughter of Roderick Morrison, a shoemaker at Ullapool for 30 years, and Mary (or "May") McKenzie.

By time of the 1881 census Ann and Donald have moved into Castle Street (now Terrace) in Ullapool and are recorded in the 1881 census there;

Donald Grant Head Mar 39 Cattle Dealer
Ann Grant (Morrison) Wife Mar 30

The next record of them Geoff has found was on the Valuation rolls of 1888/9 as living on the old curing station on Isle Martin, paying 10 shillings per annum rent.

The 1891 census has a daughter of Donald and Ann visiting the home of her Morrison grandparents at Ullapool;

Roderick Morrison      Head         Mar   74
Mary        Do         Wife         Mar      68
Dolina      Do         Dau          Un       26
Mary Grant          Granddaughter             6

After this time Geoff relys on family history to say that Ann died soon after the turn of the 20th century and the family then moved to Inverness and then south to the Scottish Borders.

John McKenzie in the next Household, Acheninver 61-6, is shown in the 1871 census to also be a miller, I expect he worked with or for the Grants.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Pages 19 and 20 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Lochbroom. The 1871 census has all marked as born at "RossShire Strathmore"; I think "Strathmore" probably refers to the valley of the River Broom beyond Ullapool.

I think John was the Widower in 1851 at Acheninver 51-14. With him then was a 19 year old Servant named Catharine McKenzie. The I.G.I. lists the marriage 8 June 1853 of John McKenzie to Catharine McKenzie, looks like John married his Housekeeper!

The 1871 census at Acheninver 71-96 has John's occupation as "Miller", in this census the Grant family in the previous Household (Acheninver 61-5), were also millers, I expect John worked for or with them.

John dies 1874, his Death Registration notes his parents had been parents had been Alexander MacKenzie and Annabella MacLean.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 20 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Coigach.

This family is in the 1871 census at Acheninver 71-97, though Murdo is away from home that year.

The I.G.I. records the mariage of Murdo Campbell to Catherine McLeod 23 November 1853, also recorded are the births of five of their children;

  1. Simon, b.15 June 1856
  2. Alexander, b.10 July 1858
  3. Roderick, b. 14 January 1861
  4. Colin, b.9 June 1863
  5. Norman, b,16 October 1865

In the 1871 census young Roderick ("Rory" above) is with his uncle Donald McLeod's family at Achduart 71-106. Donald McLeod there is shown as born at Dornie, so likely Catherine above was also from there.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 20 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Coigach.

Since the 1851 census at Acheninver 51-13 Williamina's husband Colin has died. In 1871 Williamina is living with Mary at Acheninver 71-98.

Colin and Wilhelmina are ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their daughter Isabella (missing here). Jenny says Isabella marries 15 January 1863 to Murdoch McKenzie from Polbain (see Polbain 41-12), then emigrates to Australia.

Jenny has transcribed the registration of Isabella's marriage to Murdo McKenzie of Polbain 15 January 1863;

The witness Donald Grant is in this census at Acheninver 61-5.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 20 of Enumeration Division #1. All marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was enumerated at Achnancarnian 51-11, in 1871 they are at Acheninver 71-99 (last house enumerated at Acheninver, before the Achnancarnian Households begin). I think it likely the enumerator could not be sure which hamlet to place the family in.

The 1851 census says that Evander was born in Gairloch Parish.

The second marriage of Evander Campbell, miller resident at Badinscally, to Flora McLeod, resident of Riff, daughter of Murdo McLeod there was registered 25 March, 1847.

Mary McLean two Households away at Acheninver 61-12 is a daughter of Evander Campbell and his first wife Mary McKenzie.

Flora's father died in 1856, but she has siblings in this census; Murdoch McLeod at Reiff 61-7, Donald and Catharine McLeod at Reiff 61-14, George McLeod at Ardmair 61-51, Christina MacKenzie at Tanera 61-3, Elizabeth McDonald at Reiff 61-23, and Ann Urquhart at Reiff 61-19. Elizabeth was a gt-gt-grandparent of myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross (CONTACT INFO), and Ann is a gt-gt-gt-grandmother of Roderick Dykes MacLeod in Scotland (CONTACT INFO), and Donald MacLeod in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO).

This family was in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-6. The names and the ages of the children match, though I think the parents ages there were mistranscribed at some point.

I think John was the Widower in 1851 at Acheninver 51-14. With him then was a 19 year old Servant named Catharine McKenzie. The I.G.I. lists the marriage 8 June 1853 of John McKenzie to Catharine McKenzie, I think John married his Housekeeper!

John dies 29 December, 1875 at Acheninver, age "73". Informant was his Widow, Catherine, his parents had been Alexander MacKenzie and Annabella MacLean.

By time of the 1881 census Catherine is widowed and living with her daughter Margaret ("Maggie") at Acheninver 81-3.

Margaret was born 1 October 1855, Sibla ("Zibla") was born 16 October 1857.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 21 of Enumeration District 1. Community in this census spelled as "Achninver". All marked as born in Coigach.

In 1861 this family was at Acheninver 61-10. The 1851 census says Evander was born in Gairloch Parish.

Evander dies before the next census, Flora is then in the Household of her nephew Donald Urquhart as a visitor at Cammusglassellan 81-2.

The second marriage of Evander Campbell, miller resident at Badinscally, to Flora McLeod, resident of Riff, daughter of Murdo McLeod there was registered 25 March 1847.

Young Duncan above marries 13 February 1873 to Ann Campbell and has a family at Acheninver. In the 1881 census he with his wife and children (including a son registered as "Evander", but enumerated as "Edward") at Acheninver 81-1.

George McLeod's age is smudged, but I think it reads "57", which somewhat agrees with his age in the 1861 census at Ardmair 61-51 as 45, in 1851 as 33 years at Ardmair 51-41, and in 1841 at Reiff 41-7 as 20 to 24 years of age. He is a brother o
