These notes are based on my own transcriptions, and those forwarded to me by other people, along with info from other sources, credited as the info appears. I have collected email addresses and websites of those people in a file; CONTACTS AND SOURCES
This file only includes Polbain, but I am slowly transcribing the rest of Coigach, and many other files link from my homepage at index.htm
Any suggestions for additions or edits please feel free to email me, Donald MacDonald-Ross, at;
Polbain or "The white pool" is on the shore across from the largest of the Summer Isles, Tanera Mor. Andrew Moir today lives at Polbain, and his webpage includes photos! (CONTACT INFO)
As well as the families below, there were christenings at Polbain;
Neil MacLeod 40 Crofter Katherine do 60 Ann do 35 Margaret do 25 Olifher(sp?) do 35Notes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty. The surname of Olifher is illegible, and I might have mistranscribed his forename.
Have not yet identified these people in later censuses.
Murdoch McLeod 45 Crofter Abby do 30 Hector do 13 Angus do 8 Allan do 6 Mary do 4Notes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty.
In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-25.
I think this family was originaly from Badentarbet. The Parish Register records the marriage 16 March, 1827 of Murdoch McLeod Badintarbet to Abigail McKenzie there, and also recorded is the christening 16 November 1828 there of a son Hector to a father Murdoch McLeod.
Memorial stone for the death of young Angus in 1875 notes him as "Mac mhurcaidh mhic eachainn", which translates as "son of Murdoch, who was son of Hector", indicating the father of Murdoch above was a Hector.
Abby's Widowed father Allan McKenie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5.
Abby's sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Abby and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.
Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Abby's parents Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;
Murdoch McLeod 50 P. Katharine do 20 Lexy do 15 Elizabeth do 15 Chirsty do 14 Donald do 13 Alexander do 11 Peggy do 9 Hughina do 7 Murdoch do 6Notes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty. Murdoch listed as a Chelsea Pensioner. In the 1851 Census at Polbain 51-26 Murdoch is listed as "Pensioner (Army of 42 Highlanders.)"
Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto is descended from Murdoch through Chirsty above. Allana has had the records searched at Kew to find Murdoch MacLeod's discharge papers, she says they are fascinating, and even include his physical description!
Although this census lists Murdoch as born in the County of Ross and Cromarty, the 1851 census has him born at Assynt in Sutherlandshire, and his discharge papers say he was born at Dornoch in Sutherlandshire!
Murdoch died 4 October 1856 at Polbain (reg#56). He was listed as a 76 year old Widower and Pensioner. He suffered from Asthma his last ten years. His parents were listed in his death registration as Donald McLeod, Tenant (Deceased), and Ann McLeod, Maiden name Macleod (Deceased). The Informant was listed as; Murdoch Macleod Son (Present) [signed]
Daughters Elizabeth and Christina ("Chirsty" above) married brothers and lived all their lives in Polbain. Christina is Allana's gt-gt-grandmother. Allana says Christina married in 1844 at Dorney to Roderick MacLeod, who was a tailor three Households away in this census at Polbain 41-6. Cannot see the families of Christina or Elizabeth in the 1851 census, but by 1861 Christina is Widowed with children at Polbain 61-1, and Elizabeth with her family is in the next Household at Polbain 61-2.
Murdoch's daughter Hughina was christened at Badenscally 8 February 1830, she married 28 December 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu (see Altandhu 51-104). Hughina and Murdoch MacLean emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. A cousin of Allana named Ngaire Moffitt there has sent a copy of Hughina's death registration, as she died in New Zealand. The death registration gives her mother's maiden name as Kerr, so possibly Murdoch was married twice...
Another cousin of Allana in New Zealand is Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO), Marg's grandmother Isabella though born in N.Z. was a daughter of Hughina who married John McDonald, an emigrant from Reiff!, see Reiff 61-23.
Hugh McLeod 40 Crofter Roderick Do. 15 Isabella McDonald 40 F.S.Notes on this Household:
All except Hugh were born in Ross and Cromarty.
Hector McKenzie 35 Crofter Jannet do 35 Murdoch do 10 Cursty do 8 John do 4Notes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty.
The Parish Register includes the marriage of Hector McKenzie of Isle Ristol to Janet McDonald from Reiff 12 March 1830. There was only one McDonald family at Reiff, (see Reiff 41-18), and so I assume Janet was a daughter of John McDonald and Catherine "Ketty" McLeod there, the naming of the second son as "John" above reinforces the likelyhood. The Reiff McDonalds include some of my own ancestors, so I would welcome any input on Hector and Janet's family; CONTACT INFO.
Roderick MacLeod 40 Tailor Catharine do 35Notes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty.
Cannot see Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 his Widow and children are at Polbain 61-1.
Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto is descended from Roderick. She says the birth registration of Roderick's son in 1855 states he married in 1844 at Dorney to Christina "Chirsty" McLeod, who is in this census at Polbain 41-3.
Catharine above was a sister of Roderick, another brother of these two married Elizabeth McLeod, sister of Roderick's wife Chirsty! Allana says both families lived all their lifes at Polbain.
Allana has not been able to find anything out about Roderick other than this listing in the 1841 Census, and that his death registration 23 April 1860 gives cause of death as Consumption (T.B.) and lists his parents as having been Neil MacLeod and Catherine MacLeod (maiden name MacLEOD). Allana has seen a Neil MacLeod listed in the O.P.R.'s who lived at Reiff and wonders if this was Roderick's father.
Donald Stewart 60 Crofter Barbara do 60 Jannet do 30 Anne do 26Notes on this Household:

Young Alexander is married to Catherine (?) by time of the 1851 census, living with her and three children next to his parents at Polbain 51-28.
Isabella's 1869 death registration notes her parents had been Murdoch MacLeod and Betsy, Maiden Surnamed MacLeod.
George McLeod 40 Mary do 85 Angus do 23Notes on this Household:
All three were born in Ross and Cromarty.
By time of the 1851 census at Polbain 51-29 Mary has died, George has married Flora (?) from Assynt and has a 4 year old daughter Mary, and Angus is shown to be a nephew of George.

In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-37.
The Parish Register records the marriage 7 March, 1820 of "John MacLeod Tanaray" to "Anne Urquhart Ruiff".
John's death is registered as 1873 at Dornie, aged 75 years, married to Ann Urquhart, The registration notes his parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacLeod. That couple are in this census at Tanera 41-1.
John MacKenzie 35 Crofter Isabella do 30 Ann do 10 Mary do 4 Donald do 6 monthsNotes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty.
In the 1851 census at Polbain 51-36 three children who should show up in this census are present; Murdo 20, Hector 17, and Catherine 16. That census shows John was from Assynt Parish, likely the three children were visiting their grandparents there in 1841.
John and Isabella were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their son Murdo.
Jenny says Isabella above was also maiden named McKenzie. The missing son Murdo eventually marries Isabella Campbell, who is a one year old child in this census at Acheninver 41-3.
Norman McLeod 40 Crofter Mary do 35 Cursty do 12 Isabella do 10 Dolina do 8 Mary do 3Notes on this Household:
All were born in Ross and Cromarty.
In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-39.
Norman's death is registered 1878 at Isle Ristol, aged "73". The Registration says Mary was Maiden Surname MacLeod, and says Norman's parents had been Donald MacLeod and Isabella MacLeod.
The death of young Mary above was registered as 14 October, 1869 at Isle Ristol aged 33 years, unmarried. The registration states her mother's Maiden Surname as MacLeod. The Parish Register includes the marriage 29 February 1828 of "Norman McLeod Altandow to Mary McMcLeod There".
Murdo McLeod 50 Crofter Aby do 35 Roderick do 7 Ann do 5 Angus 1Notes on this Household:
All except Murdo were born in Ross and Cromarty. No surname or ditto written for Angus, but the 1851 census confirms he was a son of Murdo and Aby.
In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-40, that listing says Murdo was born in Ross and Cromarty!
Roderick's death is registered as unmarried 1866 at Polbain aged 32 years. The registration notes his parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.
Ann's death is registered as 1866 at Polbain, aged 29 years. The registration notes her parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.
James MacLeod 30 Crofter Jannet MacLeod 70Notes on this Household:
Both were born in Ross and Cromarty.
By time of the 1851 census Jannet has died, and James is with his wife Barbara and three children at Polbain 51-38.
The Parish Register records the marriage 23 December 1847 of James McLeod a Crofter resident at Polbain to Barbara Morrison resident at Kanlochbuie, daughter of Angus Morrison there (I am unfamiliar with the place, but the 1851 census gives her birth place as in the Parish od Edrachilles, SutherlandShire).

All were born in Ross and Cromarty. No surname or ditto written for Murdoch, but I assume him to be a child of this family. Mary's age was written in the "Male" column, and the enumeration counted her that way, clearly a transcription error I think!
In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-44.
The Parish Register has the marriage 22 December 1813 of Finlay Shaw Tanary, and Eric McLennan there.
Young Ann is a daughter of Roderick and Mary, she shows up in the 1851 census as a servant to the MacLeod family at Polbain 51-38. Interesting that the civil registration of three of Roderick and Mary's children list Mary's maiden surname also as Shaw! I am uncertain which of Roderick or Mary is the daughter of Finlay and Henny.
Roderick is missing in the 1851 census, but Mary along with three children, is at Polbain 51-43.
Sometime before the 1851 census a daughter of Finlay and Henny marries Kenneth MacLean, they are living with her parents and a nine month old son.
Cannot see the younger Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 he is at Polbain 61-22, married with six children. Similarly, Murdoch is missing in 1851, but in 1861 is married with three sons at Polbain 61-24.

Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom, except Murdoch born at Assynt in SutherlandShire.
In the 1841 Census this family was at Polbain 41-3.
Murdoch is a gt-gt-gt-grandfather of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto through his daughter Christina "Chirsty", who is not present in this census. Allana has done much research on this family and provided most of the following details.
The 1841 census lists Murdoch as born in the County of Ross and Cromarty, this census has him born at Assynt in Sutherlandshire, and his discharge papers say he was born at Dornoch in Sutherlandshire!
The Informant was listed as "Murdoch Macleod Son (Present) [signed]"
Chirsty married in 1844 to Roderick MacLeod, who was a tailor 26 years older than her, his place of residence listed as Dorney though in the 1841 census he was at Polbain 41-6 with his sister Catharine. Allana has not been able to find anything further about Roderick yet. In 1861 Chirsty is Widowed with four sons at Polbain 61-1.
Allana says Chirsty's sister Elizabeth (not present in this census) married John McLeod, brother of Chirsty's husband Roderick! Elizabeth with family is in the 1861 census next to Chirsty at Polbain 61-2.
Another daughter of Murdoch, Hughina, married 28 December 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu (see Altandhu 51-104). Hughina and Murdoch MacLean emigrate to New Zealand in 1858. A cousin of Allana named Ngaire Moffitt there has sent a copy of Hughina's death registration, as she died in New Zealand. The death registration gives her mother's maiden name as Kerr. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. also include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).
26 March 1857 young Donald marries Catherine McLeod. They are in the 1861 census in the neighbouring community at Dornie 61-3. With them and two young children there are Donald's then still unmarried brother Murdoch (young Murdo above, Informant of their father's death), and a 25 year old niece Margaret, most likely the 15 year old servant above.

Before the next census Neil dies, Donald marries Ann Campbell from Gairloch, and Isabella is living with Donald, his wife, and their three children at Polbain 61-5.
Isabella dies 15 May, 1869, aged "96 years". The registration notes her parents had been Murdoch MacLeod and Betsy, Maiden Surnamed MacLeod.

The O.P.R. includes mention of marriage 21 February 1820 of John McDonald Tanaray to Janet Campbell Dornie. I am sure that refers to this family, as by time of the 1871 census Janet is at Polbain 71-14, with the next household (on the same lot perhaps?) containing only an unmarried woman, named Margaret Campbell.
The Parish Register includes christenings of two of the children above, both with father's residence as "Badentarbet";
The next Household, Polbain 51-31, has only an unmarried George Campbell, born at Gairloch like Jessy above, I suspect they were brother and sister. Tge 1864 Death registration of George says their parents had been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

Chirsty was a Morrison, in the 1841 census she was with her family at Badentarbet 41-2. Her parents and other relatives are in this census at Achnahaird 51-60.
In the 1861 census Murdoch has died, and Chirsty (as "Christina") is at Polbain 61-15 with her daughter, and her mother Isabella Morrison.
The Parish Register records the marriage 18 January 1850 of Murdoch McKenzie, a Labourer at Polbain, to Christina Morrison of Achnahaird, her father's name disapears into the fold of the page, but his residence was also given as Achnahaird.

The Parish Register has the marriage 22 December 1813 of Finlay Shaw Tanary, and Eric McLennan there ("Eric", "Henny", "Euphemia", and "Henrietta" were all variations of the same name).

Cannot find this family in the 1851 census, though Christina "Chirsty" was in 1841 with her family at Polbain 41-3.
In 1871 Christina with two sons is at Polbain 71-9.
Christina was a gt-grandmother of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) through her son Murdoch above. Allana has provided lots of info on this family!
Christina's husband had been Roderick MacLeod, he died 23 April 1860. Roderick was in the 1841 census with a sister at Polbain 41-6.
Civil Registration of the birth of Neil 14 May 1855 shows his father was Roderick McLeod, and his mother Christina's maiden surname was also McLeod, that registration says they were married 1844 at Dorney, and that Roderick who was 26 years older than Christina was a Tailor.
Young Donald dies 15 March, 1869, his occupation like his father had been noted as Tailor. The death registration confirms Christina was Maiden Surname MacLeod.
I suspect Murdoch McIver angered the enumerator, the word "Idiotic" has been circled three times!
Christina's sister Hughina married 28 December 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu and emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).
Eliza McLeod in the next Household, Polbain 61-2, is a sister of Christina, and Eliza'a husband John was a brother of Christina's husband Roderick!

In 1871 John and Elisabeth with six children are at Polbain 71-10, with John's sisters Ann and Annabella in the next Household at Polbain 71-11. Probably the two Households were on the same croft.
Civil Registration shows John McLeod married Elisebeth McLeod 19 March 1857. Also recorded is the birth of Catherine 22 December 1859 and a son Neil 12 August 1859. I think that Neil died young, and the Nephew Neil above was born 22 August 1859 to Donald McLeod and Jane McLeod, not certain but likely that George was also a son of that couple.
The Widow Christina McLeod in the previous Household, Polbain 61-1, was married to Roderick McLeod, a brother of Elisabeth's husband John! Christina was an ancestor of Allana MacLean of Toronto (CONTACT INFO), who has contributed much of the info on this family.

It also notes he had been in the army, serving during the Indiam Mutiny of 1857-8. It says Helen died 3 July, 1927 at Altandhu aged 72 (so born about 1855), the stone erected by "K. A. MacLean, Conon Bridge". Also commemorated on the stone is "her sister Ann MacLean wife of William Fraser who died at Inverness 16 March 1915 interred in Frasers lair in Dores Cemetery".
Angus has siblings in the next two Households; Hector at Polbain 71-6 and Mary at Polbain 71-7). Their parents Murdoch McLeod and Abbie McKenzie were in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-7.

Cannot see this family in the 1861 census, however I think Hector above and Mary in the next Household, Polbain 71-7, and Angus in the previous Household, Polbain 71-5, were sons of Murdoch McLeod and Abbie McKenzie who were in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-7.
In 1881 this family is at Polbain 81-3.
The birth of Alexander was registered at Lochbroom 25 October, 1867 with parents Hector McLeod and Mary McLeod. The marriage of that couple was registered 14 January, 1862 at Lochbroom, and the same named couple a few weeks later, 6 February, 1862 at Assynt.
The death of three year old Murdoch of this couple is recorded as 5 February, 1875 at Polbain, the death registration confirms Mary's Maiden Surname as McLeod.

I think Mary was sister to Hector in the previous Household, Polbain 71-6, and Angus in the Household before that, Polbain 71-5, their parents in the 1861 census having been Murdoch McLeod and Abbie McKenzie at Polbain 61-7.
The Civil Registration Index shows the marriage 12 January, 1859 of Murdoch McLeod to Mary McLeod in Lochbroom Parish, and the births of seven children at Lochbroom to that couple;

Christina "Christy" was a gt-grandmother of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) through her son Murdoch above. Allana has provided lots of info on this family!
Christina's husband had been Roderick MacLeod, he died 23 April 1860. Roderick was in the 1841 census with a sister at Polbain 41-6.
Neil's birth was registered 14 May 1855 to father Roderick McLeod and mother Christina McLeod. That registration says they were married 1844 at Dorney, and that Roderick who was 26 years older than Christina was a Tailor..
Elisabeth McLeod in the next Household, Polbain 71-10, is a sister of Christina, and Elisabeth's husband John was a brother of Christina's husband Roderick!

There are a number of births in the Civil Registration Index to Donald McKenzie and Ann McLeod, the following I am sure are for this family;
There are two marriages in the I.G.I. in the right period of a Donald McKenzie to an Ann McLeod, without yet having seen the actual registers I am not sure which refers to the couple above;
