These notes are built around my own and others transcriptions of various Polglass censuses. They have been fleshed out a bit with info from birth, marriage, and death registrations, and family info from other researchers.
My main genealogy page is at index.htm from there you will find links to other Coigach researchers, communities, a small history file, and a gazetteer of Coigach.
If you see any errors or omissions please let me know, thanks,
Donald MacDonald-Ross

In 1861 this family is at Polglass 61-24.
Alexander's marriage registration 23 February 1871 to Catherine McKenzie of Achiltibuie gives his mothers name as Ann McKenzie. Ann dies some time after this census, and Duncan remarries 17 January 1856 to Margaret McLeod.
Roderick above marries 3 January 1856 to Murdina McLeod of Achiltibuie, who is in this census as Servant to the MacLeod family three Households away at Polglass 51-47.

A daughter of this family, Margaret, "Peggy" in 1841, dies 28 October, 1857 at Polglass, single, aged 24 years, of "Childbed 5 days". The death registration confirms her mother Christian was Maiden Surname Fraser.

In the 1841 census Ann ("Annable") was with six of her Fraser siblings at Achiltibuie 41-31.
This family is in the 1861 census at Polglass 61-4, Hugh dies before then.
The Civil registration of Hugh and Ann's daughter Hughina 11 December 1856 shows Anabella's maiden surname was Fraser.
Three brothers of Ann are in this census at Achiltibuie 51-77, her sister Margret is married to Kenneth McLeod at Achiltibuie 51-92, and her sister Hughina is married to John McLean at Achiltibuie 51-72.
Murdina was from Achiltibuie, christened there 25 October 1829. She was in the 1841 census with her parents Alexander McLeod and Mary McDonald at Achiltibuie 41-24. She marries 3 January 1856 to Roderick McKenzie, who is in the Household three before this at Polglass 51-44. Murdina and Roderick are in the 1861 census with two children at Polglass 61-23.

A daughter of this family, Catherine, has death registered as 1896 at Polglass, aged 52 years. Her parents are noted as having been Murdo Graham and Catherine, Maiden Surname McLean.
Parish Register records the marriage 2 March 1827 of Murdo Graham Achiltibuie to Catharine McLean there.
I think young Kenneth shows up in the 1881 census at Achiltibuie 81-4.
Chirsty McKenzie, with a different spelling of her forename in each census, is with this family from at least this census to her death 1893. The registration notes her parents had been John MacKenzie and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacDonald.

Roderick was first married to Margaret MacDonald, their child Alexander is in the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-15. Alexander dies 1 November, 1861, and his death registration with Samuel (above) as Informant gives the parents names, and notes Margaret was already dead.
Annabella has a sister in this census, Ann Graham, at Achiltibuie 51-84. Ann's 1856 death registration has young Samuel above as Informant, and notes the parents of Annabella and Ann were Duncan McGregor and Annabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

The Parish Register includes 15 January, 1824 the marriage of "Murdo McLeod Inverstrathan Coigach and Anable Lamont Bradach Assaint". Anabella dies a few months after the 1861 census, her death registration says her parents were William Lamont and Margaret McLeod.
Abigail ("Abby" above) marries 23 March, 1865 to John McLeod, they are in the 1871 census with four children at Polglass 71-60. Abigail and John were great-grandparents of Jim McGreal of Hamilton Ontario (CONTACT INFO).
With this family in 1841 was a son William, he is in this census as servant to a McKenzie family at Achiltibuie 51-74.
John above marries 23 December, 1858 to Margaret McRae, daughter of Norman McRae and Janet, Maiden Surname Kerr, she is in this census at Polglass 51-58.

This Household appears on page 17 of Enumeration District #7. All are listed as born at Lochbroom.
In 1841 this family was listed at Achiltibuie 41-12, all Polglass families were counted with Achiltibuie that year. In 1861 they are at Polglass 61-14.
The Parish Register includes the chistening of Murdoch Stewart to a father Duncan at Achiltibuie 15 July 1822.
The Parish Register also has the registration of the marriage of Murdo Stewart to Christina McLeod 28 February 1850, both are listed as resident at Polglass, though the forename of Christina's father is lost in the fold of the page.
Memorials at the Badenscallie burial ground include a tombstone erected by Murdo Stewart, to his wife Christina McLeod, stating she died 18 December 1850 aged 25 years. Looks like Chirsty above was born at that time, and Christina died either in childbirth, or shortly after. Chirsty McLeod above is the only person I have seen so far in the Coigach censuses with occupation description as "Wet Nurse", clearly her charge was young Chirsty Stewart.
A daughter of this family, Christina or "Chirsty", married 9 January 1850 to Kenneth McLean of Altandhu. They are in this census with his family and a six month old son Duncan at Altandhu 51-99.
Alexander marries shortly before the next census, 7 February 1861, to yet another Christina McLeod, who is in this census at Polglass 51-60. In the next census they are in the Household next to his mothers (on the same croft?) at Polglass 61-15.

John's missing wife is Henny, she is with the family in both the 1841 and 1861 censuses.
John dies 3 September 1861 of old age. Murdo was Informant on the death registration, and he lists his fathers age as "About 80 yrs". The registration says John's parents were John McLeod and Margaret McIver.
In the 1841 census with this family were Donald and Ann Campbell, Ann was a daughter of John and Henny. Ann is in this census in the next Household, Polglass 51-55, though Donald is missing. Most likely the two households are on the same croft.

This Household appears on page 17 of Enumeration District #7. All are listed as born at Lochbroom, except Ann born at Gairloch.
Ann's missing husband is Donald Campbell, birth registrations of some of their children list Ann's maiden surname as McLeod.
Ann is a daughter of the McLeod family in the previous Household, Polglass 51-54, she and Donald were with them in 1841 at Achiltibuie 41-13 (all Polglass families were counted with Achiltibuie that year). I think it most likely the two households are on the same croft.
In 1861 this family is at Polglass 61-10.
Donald was christened 7 February 1816 at Badenscallie as a son of Angus Campbell and Mary Stewart. In this census his Widowed mother and five siblings are at Badenscallie 51-41, Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-18 is another brother, and Catharine McLeod at Polglass 51-65 is another sister.

In 1841 these sisters were listed at Achiltibuie 41-16, all Polglass families were counted with Achiltibuie that year. In 1861 Peggy is at Polglass 61-7.
The 1841 census says both were not born in the County, and the 1861 census says Peggy was born at Assynt, so I think the enumerator made a mistake this year to say they were both born at Lochbroom.

In the 1841 census Lauchlin was servant to a McLeod family at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-2.
At the Badenscallie burial ground there is a flat stone inscribed; "Norman McRae, late catechist, Free Church of Scotland, parish of Lochbroom, died 20.3.1853 aged 70 years"
Donald McRae died 7 April, 1869 aged 49, He was a teacher and the Registrar up to that time. The entry gives his mother's maiden name as Janet Kerr & says his father Norman was previously a soldier in the 93d Regt. [later called the Sutherland Highlanders]. Janet is missing in this census but is widowed Head of Household in the next.
Peggy above marries 23 December, 1858 to John McLeod, he is in this census with his family at Polglass 51-52. They are in the 1861 census in the Household next to the MacRaes at Polglass 61-31, with a one year old son Norman clearly named to honour Peggy's father.
The Parish Register includes the christening of Mary McRae 7 February, 1830 at Achiltibuie to a father named Norman.
The Parish Register also includes the marriage 17 February, 1848 of a daughter of Norman McRae named Jane to Alexander McKenzie who was then resident at a place written unclearly, but seems to read as "Ballachladish, Par. of Assynt".

In 1841 Roderick (as "Rory") and his mother Ann were listed at Achiltibuie 41-19 with other family members including Ann's husband, another Roderick, all Polglass families were counted with Achiltibuie that year. In 1861 this family is at Achlochan 61-5.
The Parish Register records the marriage 1 June 1847 between Roderick McLeod, a crofter resident at Achiltibuie, and Penelope McDonald, resident at Ullapool, daughter of "Murdo McDonald, Weaver, Tanera". Penelope's father and other relatives are in this census at Tanera 51-10.
In the 1841 census was a sister of Roderick, Jane, whose death (single) was registered as 14 July 1860 at Polglass, Informant being her nephew James McLeod. The registration lists her parents (both dead then) as Roderick McLeod and Ann McKenzie. Ann is the 85 year old Widowed mother above.
The civil registrations of deaths contain the following;
Also in the 1841 census was a brother of Roderick named Hugh, he is Head of Household now of the next family; Polglass 51-63.

Though enumerated as part of Polglass, this was an Achlochan family, all of which were enumerated as part of Polglass in 1851.
In the 1841 census this family was at Achlochan 41-1, in 1861 they are at Achlochan 61-1.
Murdo dies 1885 at Achlochan, age 81 years, Informant his son Donald. The registration notes Ann's Maiden Surname was MacLeod, and his parents had been Kenneth McLean and Mary, Maiden Surname Beaton.

This Household appears on page 20 of Enumeration District #7. All are listed as born at Lochbroom.
In the 1841 census Catharine was with her Widowed mother Mary and other Campbell relatives at Badenscallie 41-23. Her father (and a brother) were named Angus, and she also names her own son Angus. Her mother and five siblings are in this census at Badenscallie 51-41.
The marriage of John McLeod, a Fisherman resident at Badenscally, to Catherine Campbell, daughter of Angus Campbell, was registered 28 January 1847. I cannot determine if John was at Badenscallie in the 1841 census.
In 1861 this family is at Polglass 61-13 with two children. That census gives John's place of birth as "Polew" (Poolewe is in Gairloch Parish).
Civil Registration of the birth of John and Catharine's daughter Isabella 26 June 1856 confirms Catharine's maiden surname was Campbell.
Besides her siblings with her mother at Badenscallie, Catharine has a brother Donald Campbell (missing in this census) at Polglass 51-55, and Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-18 is another brother.

Malcolm was a boatbuilder and carpenter, born about 1800 on the Isle Ristol. He married 24 June, 1828 to Janet "Jessie" McLeod, who was born at Badendaroch, Assynt, Sutherland. His death is registered 1889 at Achlochan, son of Murdo MacLeod and Mary, Maiden surname MacLeod. His father Murdo is in the previous Household Polglass 51-66 with the family of another son, Donald.

Paulette Flint in Australia (CONTACT INFO) is her family's genealogist, her husband Ray is a descendant of Flora and Murdoch. Paulette has done lots of research on this family, and has provided most of the following info;
Malcolm and Jessie had six children;
Flora married Murdoch McLeod (born 1830, son of Donald (born 1784, Gairloch) and Isabella Stewart), on 10 February 1859.
Flora and Murdoch had a daughter Isabella, then emigrated to Queensland Australia. Their son William was born at sea. Their ten other children; Jessie, Roderick Donald, Christina, Mary, John, Christina, Jessie, Flora and George Alexander were born in Australia.

The entry gives his mother's maiden name as Janet Kerr & says his father Norman was previously a soldier in the 93d Regt. [later called the Sutherland Highlanders]. Donald was Enumerator for this census division in 1861, see district.htm.
John McLeod Head Mar 36 Fisherman Margret Do Wife Mar 36 Norman Do Son 1Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 14 of Enumeration Division #1. John and Norman marked as born at Coigach, Margret marked as born in CaithnessShire at a place named "Cha..." (indistinct ending). The 1871 census seems to spell her place of birth in CaithnessShire as either "Strathfield" or "Heathfield".
Margret is a daughter of Janet McRae in the previous Household, Polglass 61-30, since the last census when she was with her McRae family at Polglass 51-58 her father Norman has died, clearly young Norman above was named in honour of Margret's father.
In the 1871 census this family is at Polglass 71-41, John and Margret have four children, including Norman, with them then.
The marriage of John McLeod to Margret McRae was registered as 23 December, 1858 at a placename indistinct near Ullapool that looks like "Kenchulles", possibly "Kenachulish". His parents noted as Murdo McLeod and Annabella, Maiden Surname Lamont, and hers as Norman McRae, Catechist (Deceased) and Janet, Maiden Surname Kerr.
Recorded in the I.G.I. are the births of six children to this couple;

This Household appears in Enumeration District 1, page 9. They were both marked as born at Polglass. It appears the Enumerator did not transcribe the top half of this Household, which would have included the Head of Household that Ann's cousin relationship was to.
In the 1861 census this family was at Polglass 61-1. In 1881 these two are at Polglass 81-22, with an unmarried sister of Ann named Cathrine (Ann and Cathrine listed as aunts of Mary, reinforcing the assumption above that the first part of the enumeration of the family in 1871 is missing).
Mary's mother Ann died a few months after the 1861 census, of "Supposed Typhus Fever", 10 August 1861. Her death registration had her son Duncan as Informant, Ann's maiden surname was Graham, and her husband had been Kenneth McLean.

"Huina" though marked with a "Do" ("Ditto") by the enumerator for a surname of Fraser, appears as "Hughina" McLeod in other records, she was a daughter of Anabella and her late husband Hugh.
Donald Fraser was a son of Roderick Fraser (above), and Mary McLeod, born 19 December 1865. Civil Registration shows the marriage of that couple 10 March 1864, and also the birth of their daughter Mary 21 October 1867.
