From Russia Living in the Dakotas
German
citizens who immigrated to Russia and then immigrated to the United States
By Coleen
Mielke
Alaska
I've
been able to find my Walcker family in the 1744 church records for
Steinheim,Marbach,
Württemberg, Germany.
They
immigrated from Germany to Neu-Freudenthal, Russia in 1817
and
immigrated from Russia to McPherson County, South Dakota in 1885.
My
OPP family originated in Rockenhausen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. I have
found
them
in the earliest films available for that area (1692). They left Rockenhausen,
Germany
in
1784 and settled in Tscherwenka, Hungary until 1805, when they continued
their
journey
on to Glueckstal, Russia. In 1884, they immigrated to America, settling
in McPherson County
South
Dakota. All of my paternal grandparents (Walkers and Opps) are buried
in
Ashley, McIntosh County North Dakota.
My
Paternal grandparents: Jacob & Rosina (Opp) Walker in 1915 with their
children:
(left
to right) Welentina (b.1915), Leah (b.1913), Adolph (b. 1909),
Pauline
(b. 1906) and in back is Samuel Walker (b. 1899)
My
grandfather,Jacob Walker (b.1873 Neu Freudenthal) is the son of Jakob Walcker
and Magdalena Hoffman...
Rosina
Opp, my grandmother (b.1880 Glueckstal) is the daughter of Daniel F. Opp
and Magdalena Klein.
Jacob
and Rosina Walker farmed in the Eureka and Long Lake area for many years
before
they retired to Ashley, North Dakota, where they are buried.
My
grandparents were very proud people, perhaps that is why they never learned
to speak English
(they
spoke the Schwäbisch German dialect). Perhaps it was their way of
holding on to Germany.

A Note about
myself:
My
husband and I were born in Alaska. I've been researching my family (as
well as my husbands family) tree for 25+ years. It is a hobby that
I find very rewarding and I love helping people solve genealogy
puzzles.
Because my grandparents were not born in the United States (my paternal grandparents were born in Russia and my mother & maternal grandparents were born in England), I did not have the pleasure of being raised near grandparents, aunts, uncles or cousins. Maybe that is the reason I feel so compelled to learn all I can about them, where they came from, why they came to America and how I fit in with those facts.
There
are nearly 9,500 surnames in my family genealogy, however, I've only
included
names
through approximately 1975 on this web page for privacy reasons.
These
pages are dedicated to my parents and grandparents pioneering spirit,
their
strength and sense of adventure.
