Check back, I hope
to add to this section often.
I've
been told that this cemetery is actually in Jackson County, Minneosta,
however, the index that
I
got this from was done in the 1930's and it lists it as Nobles County,
so I'm going to post this cemetery on
both
county pages.

These next cemeteries
are recorded very differently. The information was written in text
format instead of a list format. I thought it was very interesting. It
is a dark film and parts of it are hard to read so you will find a few
??? marks where it
was totally unreadable. I thought these were interesting because they also
provide some history. No author is listed.
Horicon
Cemetery
Westford Township
Martin County, Minnesota
The cemetery is on a slightly wooded knoll outside Westford Township. The first person buried there seems to be a Mrs. Moses Burley, although no dates are known for her. A child, James W. Toothaker, a child of 3, was buried on the same knoll in 1873; Delbert Spencer, a boy of 2 was buried there in 1882; and James Corbotts grave is marked by a tombstone that reads 1838-1879.
This cemetery is small
and contains mostly graves of pioneers who settled in the vicinity and
their descendants. There are many Toothackers in this cemetery:
Catherine Toothacker
1856-1928; George H. Toothacker 1861-1890; Franklin S . Toothacker 1827-1904;
Nancy A. Toothacker 1836-1900; Laura E. Toothacker Greeley 1877-1929; Nettie
Toothacker Hagen 1873-191?. Other pioneers are
Lucy Evans 1843-1923;
Griffith Evans 1843-1920; Andrew Swanson 1862-1927; John Swanson 1869-1924;
Jane Reader 1857-1928; John Eli Reader 1936; Caroline Cooper 1858-1928;
and Sylvester Cooper 1834-1914. Sylvester is the only war veteran buried
here. He was a veteran of the Civil War.
There are very few graves without a stone marker but there is one marker without a visible sign of a grave. It is a small marker that tells of the ashes of James B. Allison who was b. 4/24/1933 and died 10/1934 on one of the islands of the Phillippines. His grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Leslie Wolf have been missionaries to these islands, and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin Allison were missionaries there for five years. His mother, Mrs. Edith Wolf and his grandfather once preached in the Horicon Church.
Not at this cemetery but in this vicinity are burials of an early date: In the fall of 1858, what is known as Sherman's Battery came through. He was on his way from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to reinforce Fort Ridgley, Minnesota. He had with him 64 mules hauling heavy guns, 80 horses and many covered wagons and a long line of marching soldiers. A few soldiers had their families with them. A little child, about 2 years old, belonging to one of these families died the night before. They asked where they might bury the child and Mr. Fowler directed them to a high hill north and east of where Horicon church now stands. The officer in charge read the burial services.
On What is now the Barvel farm, rests Mrs. Eveline Connelley, who died 7/24/1871 and who had attained the age of 56. Also, Samuel Barker died 1873 at age 13 whose parents were Mr. & Mrs. Henry Barker, came to Martin County in 1866. Lucy Loomer age 16 died 8/26/1871 and was buried on the Hosea True farm. She was the daughter of Albert & Nancy Loomer.
Lone
Cedar Cemetery
Manyaska Township,
Martin County, Minnesota
In the days when Mr. Spencer homesteaded a parcel of land in the NE quarter of Sec. 30 of Manyaska Township, there were few churches and cemeteries. Mrs. Spencer, perhaps due to ill health and maybe because others were buried on their homesteads, selected a spot on their farm and requested that when she died, she be buried there. Within a few years this request was fulfilled an the first grave was dug in what is now Lone Cedar Cemetery. She died January 23, 1872. In later years, Mr. Spencer died in Owatonna but was brought to his old homestead for burial.
Since bodies had been buried on the various homesteads, the need of a community cemetery was discussed. in 1875 the land was bought from James Spencer. This included the grave of his mother. Other bodies were moved to rest near this one; among them were Mary E. Everett d. 3/30/1875; Inas ???? d.10.24.1873; who was the grandchild of Mrs. Spencer and daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Shotwell.

Imogene
Rose Lake Cemetery
Prarie Township, Martin

During the Summer of 1865, the son, a lad of 12, of Mr. & Mrs. Jessie Guild was in very frail health and in the autumn; the child died. His body was laid to rest on a knoll on the homestead. Two years later, a neighbor girl, Hanna A. Cripps was accidentally and fatally shot and buried on the knoll near the little boy.
