***Austin Lathrop got his financial start as a contractor after the great Seattle fire of 1889. Arriving in Alaska in 1896, he purchased the steam ship Perry and transported freight during the gold rush years. He owned the California-Alaska Mining and Development Co. and drilled for oil at Cold Bay in 1903. Lathrop was elected mayor of Cordova in 1916 and built his first theater there. He later built theaters in Fairbanks and Anchorage (4th Avenue Theater). In 1920 he was elected to the Alaska Territory House of Representatives. In 1924, he produced a full length silent movie about the Klondike Gold Rush, it was the first full length film to be shot entirely in Alaska. In 1929, Lathrop bought the Fairbanks Daily News Miner. In 1948 he opened KENI radio station in Anchorage.
