My great great grandfather was Edward (sometimes recorded as Edmund/Edmond) Driscoll, who was born C 1840 in Co Cork. His parents on his certificates were given as Daniel Driscoll, mariner and Kate/Catherine Sullivan. He married in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney in 1870 to Johanna Moloney. Their children were:
Catherine (Kate) b 1871
William Edward b 1872 (my great grandfather)
Mary Ann b 1874 d 1874
Edward b 1876 d 1877
Daniel b 1878
The children's births were all registered as "Driscoll". Mary Ann and Edward who died as infants had their deaths also registered under "Driscoll". However, the other three children used the name "O'Driscoll" for their marriages and death registrations.
Edward's death in 1913 is registered as "Driscoll", but his wife's death 15 years later is recorded as "O'Driscoll".
Edward's death certificate states that he lived in NSW for 44 years, so he must have arrived the year before his marriage. I have been unable to track down his arrival. His occupation was a mariner (like his father) and later a cook Family stories relate that he was a captain of a ship and that he jumped ship in Sydney. I doubt that he was a captain, but more likely a crewman (of which there are several recorded on mariners lists), as he liked a drink. In fact he died in an asylum in Parramatta which was not close to his residence, and is buried in a different grave to his wife in a completely different Catholic section of the same cemetery.
I have plenty of information about the descendants of Edward and Johanna, but would love to find out which part of Cork that Edward came from (his certificates all give his birth place as Co Cork or just Cork!). I would also like to find his birth date and that of any siblings and of course the marriage date of his parents Daniel (O)'Driscoll and Kate Sullivan.
