My family came to Collin County as Peters Colonists. They came from Missouri and crossed the Red River in Dec. 1945. Two families, John Davidson Brown, wife Rebecca Pearis, and kids, and Joseph Russell, wife Elizabeth Gray, and kids. If anyone out there has this family line, I'd love to get together. Have nothing on Joseph Russell or Elizabeth Gray, although I have a clue that Joseph's father might be Nathan Russell.


Response: Diane, Are you familiar with the book done in 1975 or so from the Papers of George Pearis Brown? Mr Brown interviewed members of pioneer families in the early years of this century.
Here is a quote from p 50: In 1846, in the spring of that year there was organized in the home of Joseph Russell, on Rowlett Creek, a Methodist church. He was our grandfather, and with his family and John D Brown and his family, crossed Red River at Old Warren, on the 18th day of D cember, 1845, after they had left Independence, Jackson County, Missouri on October 18, 1845 -- just two months on the road. The church was organized with Joseph Russell and wife- Elizabeth Gray-Russell; their daughter, Isabelle Russell, who became the wi e of Rev. John Beverly a few years later; Elizabeth Russell, who became the wife of Robert H Brown; Sam P Brown and wife Nancy Russell-Brown; Mrs Mary Russell-Stone, a widow, who became the wife of Sam P Brown in the fall of 1846, after the death of Nancy Russell-Brown in the spring of 1846, and who lies buried at the graveyard at Old Buckner; and a few others whose names cannot be procured. Then in the summer of 1846 there was organized a Methodist church in the Weston Community, with the Culwells and the r families and John D Brown and wife Rebecca Clay Pearis-Brown, as original members.

We are looking for information on David J. Hancock and his family, a daughter of whom, Grace E. Hancock Kitchingham, married George I. Hand and another daughter, Hattie Hancock, married Charlie Gunter. Our grandfather, George B. Hancock, married Jo Sheff er. We have been unable to determine what happened to David J. as well as what has happened to Jo. Can you help, or would any of your books help? I appreicate this page with its helpful links. My husband is descended from John Tarpley, who lived in Collin Co. between 1870 and 1880 approximately and served as Assessor of Taxes, and his wife Sarah H. Davis through their son Collin Tarpley, who lived in Collin Co. during the same time period. Collin's wife was Nancy Jane Wilkins, daughter of Samuel Wilkins and Eliza Ann Martin. Samuel, an early minister of Parker Presbyterian Church, and Eliza are buried in Plano Mutual Cemetery although I have been unable to find a marker.
