We were pleased to greet in our office yesterday morning, Mr. Ryland S. FINDLAY, formerly connected with that staunch old democratic sheet, the Caucasian, of Lexington, Mo.

There will be a political discussion at the Court House in McKinney, on Saturday, April 22, 1871. We are requested to say that the debate as published heretofore was prevented by high water.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Militia Notice: In compliance with the Militia Law ..... the Militia of Collin County will meet me in the town of McKinney, on Monday the 1st day of May 1871, at 10 o’clock A. M., for the purpose of being organized into companies of one hundred men to each company. Come one, come all, white and black or suffer the severest penalty of the law. W. N. Notice: By virtue of an order .... of the Probate Court of Collin County and directed to me as Overseer of Roads, I will proceed to let out all the first class roads in Collin County to the lowest and best bidder .... from and after the 1st Monday in May, for 12 months from that date, requiring of each lowest and best bidder a bond in double the amount of his bid for the faithful performance of his duty and contract.... Lynda Encampment, I. O. O. F. The Lynda Encampment met at McKinney, Texas, January 4th 1871, and was organized by our most worthy District Deputy Grand Patriarch, B. F. CHRISTIAN, when the following officers were elected and installed, to-wit: D. J. TAYLOR, C.P.; J. H. FOSTER, H. P.; H. C. HERNDON, I. W.; Jno. M. LILLARD, Sect’ry.; F. D. EMERSON, J.W.; W. D. PARKER, Treasurer; A.J. TAYLOR, Sentinel. And will meet on the first Friday night in each month, successively. D. J. TAYLOR C.P.; Jno M. LILLARD, Secretary.

Photographs. –That excellent artist, N.G. FOWLER, has fitted up in most elegant style, the rooms over the storehouse of J. H. ALLISON & Co., with skylight, and all the appartenances of a first-class Photograph Gallery.... We have seen some of his work which we think is hard to excel, and advise all desiring work in his line to call in at his gallery and examine his specimens.

Our citizens who visit the terminus of the Texas Central Railroad, for the purpose of selling produce or purchasing supplies, will find our friend and former townsman, Col. Lee MARTIN at the wholesale grocery house of BLOCK & Bro.

L. A. DEWY, of Lebanon has opened a first class Family Grocery in that place, which is well supplied with everything needed in that line.

We understand that a man has been in the western part of this county, representing himself as an escaped military prisoner from the Dry Tortugas, and playing upon the credulity of our people by telling them that their relations and friends who were missing in the late war, are now confined at that Fort. This is an old dodge and should need no exposure. It is simply untrue from the beginning.

“MELISH” – We understand that the Flop Eared Militia of Collin County is to be organized forth-with. What a magnificent spectacle would be presented by a “Grand Review,” of the well appointed Texas Milish by “Light Horse Bill.”

Col. MURRAY has on his place, peaches nearly as large as partridge eggs.

Deputy Sheriff YANTIS left last Monday for Huntsville, with the prisoners convicted at the last term of the District court numbering four, we are told.

$150 Reward. Stolen from my lot in the town of Plano, on Saturday night of the 6th, between 10 o’clock and midnight a Bright Bay Horse. Sixteen hands high, one white foot behind, heavy made, some wind galls and some fresh saddle marks, seven years old and branded S with bar across it on left shoulder. (Included for historical interest.) Editorial: ........What republican is there in Collin county who is willing or desirous to have his children go to a mixed school? In our opinion there is not one. Yet, this is the teaching of the radical leaders.—It is not the honest wish of any decent white man in the State that his children shall be reared and educated in the same schools with negroes. Notwithstanding such is the outward show and doctrine taught by the State Journal and the Davis leaders at Austin, it is not their intention to practice with their children and families what they preach.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

We understand that grapes of every variety were seriously injured by the frost last week.

Petrifaction: Mr. M.L. ASHFORD (?) has left in our [Weekly Enquirer] office some beautiful specimens of petrified matter taken from a well near 20 feet deep in the eastern edge of Denton County. Among the lot are birds’ beaks, what are supposed to be shark’s teeth, minerals & c.. They are the most perfectly formed incrustations we have ever seen in the country.

HORRIBLE MURDER. (This article is included because of the occurrence’s proximity to Collin County and it’s interest to the region.) During our experience as a journalist, it has never fallen to our lot to chronicle a more deliberate and horrible murder than that which we are about to relate. The victim, W. A. JONES, the eldest son of our esteemed townsman, D. A. JONES, late of Missouri, was a young man, some 18 or 19 years of age, high esteemed for his many good traits of character – modest, unassuming, kind and generous – a warm friend, an agreeable companion, respected alike by old and young. The whole community is shocked and lament the bloody deed of the murderer, Oscar CLARKE, who is a freedman, and bears the unenviable reputation among both white and black of being a bad man. He is now, as we write, Thursday evening, in custody, heavily ironed. The District Court being in session, he will be tried forthwith, and will speedily meet that justice he so richly deserves. The facts are furnished us by Mr. Morg REDMAN, are, in substance, as follows: On Tuesday morning, the 18th inst., the young man, JONES, went out in the section of country where Oscar CLARK lived, to summon a number of witnesses, CLARK among the rest.-- After having made the round, he started back to town from CLARK’s house, and was seen passing a neighbor’s nearby in company with him which was the last time JONES was ever seen alive. After traveling some distance in the direction of Gaineville, CLARK went back to his house and got his gun, and struck out through the prairie, a near way, to overtake young JONES, who was traveling along the road leisurly expecting CLARK to overtake him. It seems as though he did overtake him, and riding up close behind, fired the gun, heavily charged with buckshot, the contents entering the back of JONES’ head. JONES’ horse sprang forward a few paces, when the rider fell a corpse to the ground, face down. – Whereupon CLARK dismounted and struck the dead man with his gun, breaking the ram-rod and one of the thimbles; the thimble and rod being found by the side of the corpse. Early the next morning, as one of the witnesses that JONES had summoned was on his way to town, he found the dead body lying in the old overland road (some 15 miles west of Gainesville.) He immediately made the facts known to his neighbors, who, suspecting, CLARK as the murderer, found and arrested him, and gave him over to officer REDMAN; who in company with several citizens started for the fatal spot as soon as it was known that the murder was committed. It is evident, JONES was murdered for his money, as one pocket was turned wrong side out. He had when he left home between thirty and fifty dollars, and when found he had only one or two dollars in a pocket that failed to be searched. (from the Gainesville Gazette)

Our young folks had a gay little hop on last Wednesday evening at the McKinney Hotel.

We see the workmen busily engaged in removing the balcony from the Planters’ House. To take that away and treat the building to a coat of paint would not only add greatly to the house but help the look of the public square very much.

Lynda Encampment of I.O.O.F. The Lynda Encampment met at McKinney, Texas January 4th, 1871 and was organized by our most worthy District Deputy Grand Patriarch, B. F. Gentlemen: I see that the Houston Union, Austin Journal, McKinney Enquirer, etc., charge that I voted against the removal of the political disabilities of certain gentlemen. The charge is untrue. Please correct the error. Respectfully, Jno. C. CONNER

Division of the State: We are under obligations to our representatives, Messrs, LANE and SHELBURNE, for recent information from the capital touching legislative affairs. – Among them we have received the bill which provides for submitting to a vote of the people, at the next general election the proposition for a division of the State...

This article is quoted in full for historical interest to the region. Jack HELM, the notorious Captain of Police passed through town, on last Thursday. We understand that he stated he was on his way to Northern Texas, to stand trial, for some indictment against him. Round Rock Senternal [sic]. If there was righteous law, impartially administered in the State, he would have to answer for a hundred murders committed by him and his partner in crime, C. S. BALL (BULL?). These men publicly boasted of having killed one hundred men in Texas in a few months, and were applaudid [sic] for these acts by the Radical press throughout the State

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

We find in the “personal” column of the St. Louis Times, of the 29th ult., the following kindly notice of one of our fellow citizens: Col. T. H. MURRAY, formerly clerk of the Missouri House of Representative, and editor of a lively paper in Warsaw, has been on a visit to St. Louis or several days past from his adopted home in McKinney, Texas. The colonel has cast aside the sword and the political baton, and now wields the yardstick with all the grace and ability that characterized him in his more pretentious but not more successful avocations.

By their card in to-day’s paper, it will be seen that our townsmen, Col. Thos. H. MURRY, and Thos. McKINNEY, have formed a copartnership for the sale of dry goods, groceries &c. These gentlemen are well known in this section as liberale [sic] men and good merchants, and we feel sure they will receive their full share of patronage.

From the Bonham News we learn that the contract for carying [sic] the mail from this place to Bonham twice a week has been let to Jno. W. CLEMENTS.

[This article is quoted in full for amusement and historical interest to the region.] Sad News from the Frontier. – We learn from parties just down from the frontier, that the people of that unfortunate section are being murdered and robbed by the Indians almost daily. A few days since a man named HEBERSON, was killed and scalped in Parker County. Williams WARDEN, of this county (Collin), who was on the frontieor [sic] collecting beef cattle, was surrounded by a large band, and had to abandon his horses and run the gauntlet. The Indians took his horses but left his cattle unmolested. Capt. Dave STIFF, of this place also (Collin County), was driving his buggy along leisurely, a few miles from Jacksboro, when a band of Indians made their appearance a short distance ahead of him. In attempting an “about face” he upset his buggy, and took shelter behind a tree near by, but was soon relieved by another party making their appearance. It is said the frontier counties are full of Indians who seem to be in no hurry about leaving. Verily an evil day has fallen upon us. Our people are murdered on the frontier by the Indians, and in the interior by the State Police, and no hope for redress. As for the matter of robbery, the Indians are far more lenient than our radical masters.

We have seen some of his work which we think is hard to excel, and advise all desiring work in his line to call in at his gallery and examine his specimens.

We return thanks to Mrs. Robt. FITZHUGH for the present of a mess of English Peas, the first we have tasted this season.

Col. Tom H. MURRAY, of our place, accompanied by his relative, Mr. BOLIVAR, from Missouri, returned from a trip North on last Thursday evening. We learn he has purchased a full stock of goods, such as are needed by our people, and will in a few days fling his shingle to the breeze as a dealer in merchandize [sic]. The firm have our best wishes for their success.

W. L. BOYD, at the old stand of MURRAY & BOYD, is now receiving his Spring stock and arranging his goods in a neat and tasteful manner.

The new store-room of HOWELL & ESTES is being farnished [sic] in a style not to be surpassed. Our merchants seem to take great interest in fixing up.

Co-Partnership Notice. The undersigned have formed a co-partnership for the purpose of transacting the business of general merchandise at McKinney, Collin County, Texas, under the firm name and style of Murray & McKinney. Thos. H. MURRAY, Thos. C. McKINNEY, McKinney, Texas, April 15, 1871.

$150 Reward. Stolen from my lot in the town of Plano, on Saturday night of the 6th inst., between 10 o’clock and midnight, a Bright bay Horse. Sixteen hands high, one white foot behind, heavy made, some wind galls and some fresh saddle marks, seven years old and branded S with bar across it on left shoulder. I will pay seventy-five dollars for the delivery of the horse, or one hundred and fifty dollars for the horse and thief or thieves. W. L. MERONEY, Plano, Texas. August 8th 1870.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Charles H. WEBB charged with the murder of N. T. JOHNSON, in Dallas a few days since, has been committed without bail.

Virgil A. BOND, formerly of the State Police and stationed at this place, was recently arrested near Jefferson, by order of Capt. ALEXANDER, and ordered to be turned over to the civil authorities of Limestone county....Judge McADOO ordered his release upon the ground that no charge of a violation of law had been preferred against him.

MAILS. – For two or three days the stages have been coming into our place without any mail of consequence. We presume that in a short time another load of 15 or 20 sacks of old mail matter will be sent up from the office immediately south of this.

We see that B. W. RHINE has been fortunate enough to secure the services of Mr. John W. PATTIE, so well and favorably known in this community, who can now be found behind the counter wielding the yard-stick as gracefully and politely as in the days of yore.

New Store. – We call attention of our readers to the advertisement of Messrs. BERNSTEIN & Co., late of New Orleans, who have opened a fresh stock of goods in the store room formerly occupied by J. H. ALLISON & Co. We have taken a look through their store and judge them to be experienced merchants from their handsome assortment and tasteful arrangement of goods.

A young man named KANADY was arrested last Tuesday evening by Sheriff BUSH on a charge of stealing a horse from Capt. E. R. STIFF, some five years since. He was held for an examination under a bond of $1000.

“Who does the McKinney Enquirer want for Congressman? We would like to know for certain. Denton Monitor. (Reply) A Texan, Maj. W. P. McLEAN will do us if he is nominated, though we will be governed by the voice of the people in the matter, believing that, they, and not a few politicians should make the selection.

We want every Democrat in Collin County to attend the democratic meeting on the 3rd of June next. It is hoped and believed that Capt. CONNER will be present.

(Letter to the Enquirer Editor) In the last weeks issue of the Messenger, I find a conversation between the editor and myself paraded before the public. The gentlemanly portion of whom, I am well satisfied do not wish to be annoyed by the details of a small misunderstanding between him and the A. H. M. Society of Collin Co., as to whether the patronage of the society should be given to its members or to outsiders. .....I must respectfully decline annoying the public any further. Geo. WHITE

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Burglary. – The "man with the auger”, visited the store house of PARRIS and WYSONG, at Highland mills on last Sunday night, and gaining no entrance proceeded to help himself to what cash was left in the till, and supplied himself with a good hat and a pistol.

This week we publish the advertisement of Messrs. MURRAY & McKINNEY, who are opening their goods on the north side of the square. The stock was selected by Col. MURRAY, in person, which is a sufficient guarantee of its beauty and fitness of this market.

Why don’t you buy your strawberries from Tom LOGAN? He has 10 of the finest varieties grown here, acclimated, and at 40 cts. Per dozen, or $3.00 per hundred; all fine large plants and fresh and will do better and give more satisfaction than those brought from the north.

There is a rumor in circulation to the effect that Joe PARKER and a companion named FREEMAN, were killed near a place in Hunt county called Hog Eye, a few days since, by the Deputy Sheriff of Hunt county and his posse.

Mr. Jas. W. THOMAS, editor of the McKinney Messenger, has been shot at several times on account of his Republicanism, but the Ku Klux can’t hit him. We believe a light scratch would wake him up and do him good. His paper, like several other Republican sheets in Texas, needs improvement. In his last number, Mr. THOMAS apologizes for issuing a half sheet. His half sheet was not half what it ought to have been. (quoted in the Enquirer from the Austin Journal.)

We have been shown a specimen of Photography executed by our clever artist, N. G. FOWLER. It is a diminutive card upon which is photographed an invitation to the Temperance celebration held in this place on last Wednesday.

Our young townsman, Jesse SHAIN has purchased the Livery stable of A. J. TUCKER for the sum of $2,500 gold.

BLAKEMAN & RUDOLPH are now selling lumber at their mill at $1.50 per 100 feet. They now have on hand about 200,000 feet.

Rain. Last Wednesday evening and night our section was visited by one of the hardest rains ever witnessed. All the streams are full, and mud abundant on every side. We are sorry to learn that the recent freshet washed away a large amount of timbers gotton [sic] out and placed on the bridge site of Messrs. WILEY & MILLIGAN, over East Fork....

The friends of our estimable fellow-citizen, Maj. Green W. KERR, will be glad to learn that his wife is rapidly recovering from the severe injuries sustained in a fall from a horse several weeks since.

Included here for historical interest to the region. A Gallant Fight. A report has been received by Adjutant General DAVIDSON from Captain COX’s company of Frontier Forces, that Sergeant R. V. PARKER with eleven men, attacked thirty-five Indians in Palo Pinto county on the 4th of this month, and after a six hour fight completely routed them. Ten Indians were killed, five of whom were scalped by the Rangers, and forty horses which had been stolen in the town of Palo Pinto, were recaptured and returned to the legitimate owners. In the engagement five of Captain COX’s company were wounded. .... Capt. COX reports the entire county overrun with Indians this moon.—

In the 26th year of her age. Mrs. BLAKEMAN leaves a devoted husband and three lovely babes to mourn her loss. She had won the esteem of all of her neighbors among whom she so recently settled.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Fruit.—One of our oldest farmers, Mr. Peter WETSEL, who has been here for twenty-five years, dropped in our office for a few minutes this week and from him we have a rather discouraging report of crops.

The handsome store house of Lew WETSEL, on the East side of the square is nearly completed, and presents a beautiful appearance, adding much to the looks of our square.

[The following is included for historical interest to the region.] Indians in Cook County. From W. N. SAVAGE, we learn that recently, while a party of 10 men were engaged in making rails they were attacked by a large part of Indians, and being unable to fight them, were driven off. They collected a party of about 20 men and followed the Indian trail to near Red River Station, here a fight ensued; one Indian certainly killed, and three more supposed to be. 43 head of horses were recovered and brought back. None of the white men were hurt, but two of the horses were killed in the engagement. Reprinted from the Sherman Courier.

MURRAY & McKINNEY have purchased the Old Lucky Store, on the north side of the square. Property is beginning to change hands rapidly lately, and at somewhat reasonable prices.

M. M. HAMILTON, who flourished in McKinney some months since, has been arrested at Columbus, Colorado county, on the charge of obtaining money under false pretenses in this county.

The examination of the Mt. Pleasant High School will take place in the Church at this place on Wednesday and Thursday, the 7th and 8th inst. – Exhibition each night. The public are respectfully invited to attend.

More Ku-Klux. Last Wednesday evening our community was thrown into a state of excitement by the rumor that a band of men had gone to the negro school house, west of town, and drawn pistols on the teacher and pupils, and drove them off. Every one felt that this was an outrage and should not be permitted, and enquiries were at once made, but no facts developed. Next day, the negro teacher came in town, and in reply to an enquiry from us, gave, substantially the following statement: Some days since, one Ned MUSE (highly colored) told him, the Blacksmith (somewhat dark, too) that he, MUSE had already secured the services of a large number of blacks, and intended to hire some white men, and break up the school, giving as a reason that the negroes “had no business at school and a d--d sight better be in the cornfield”. The teacher stated that no white person had molested him or his scholars. He also told us that the burning of the school house last year was the work of negroes, which fact had been satisfactorily ascertained, through he had no direct proof as to the individuals. If any of our readers take the Miscegenator, they will remember that that thing characterized the burning as a “Democratic Victory,” trying to create the impression abroad that the act was endorsed by the white people of the county. – We suppose this matter will furnish him material for many Ku Klux letters, and be reported to radical headquarters as “another horrible ku klux outrage in Collin county.”

We are glad to learn that the timbers washed away from the bridge site of Messrs. WILEY & MILLIGAN, lodged about a mile below, and can be recovered, when, we presume, the bridge will be speedily constructed.

We would say to our readers who desire a good photograph that our artist, Mr. FOWLER, will only remain a couple of weeks longer at our place, when he will commence his summer tour.

We have heretofore neglected to notice the new two story home being erected by our friend, Jas. McKINNEY, near the McKinney Hotel. The workmen are now finishing it up, and when completed, it will help the looks of that part of town.

Our friend Newt HARRIS, near the McKinney Hotel, now has ice, and something to melt it. Call in and cool off.

The rumor we published last week in regard to the killing of Joe PARKER and FREMAN [sic], in Hunt county, turns out to be untrue.

$150 Reward. Stolen from my lot in the town of Plano, on Saturday night of the 6th inst., between 10 o’clock and midnight, a Bright bay Horse. Sixteen hands high, one white foot behind, heavy made, some wind galls and some fresh saddle marks, seven years old and branded S with bar across it on left shoulder. I will pay seventy-five dollars for the delivery of the horse, or one hundred and fifty dollars for the horse and thief or thieves. W. L. MERONEY, Plano, Texas. August 8th 1870.

Adjourned Meeting of the Democracy of Collin County. A meeting ... was held at the Court house, McKinney, on ... June 24, 1871 for the purpose of appointing delegates to the Dallas District Convention. Col. M. W. ALLEN called the meeting to order, and announced ..... he would preside, unless objections were made. Objections being made, and Thos. H. MURRAY was put in nomination as the anti-CONNER candidate for chairman. A division was called for and a count made. Majority for ALLEN. T. H. MURRAY was elected Secretary by aclamation [sic]. Resolutions were read by: John JOHNSON. O. C. HALL. Dr. T. W. WILEY. Harrisson [sic] BUTCHER. The Chairman appointed the following gentlemen as delegates to said convention: J. W. MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

The Bonham News says that a young man named George McELROY, formerly a clerk in RHINE’s store attempted to commit suicide by taking arsenic. Emetics were administered and his stomach, relieved of the poison.

Marshall PULLIAM, of Highland, has been eating ripe peaches since the 11th of June. There are few, if any of our farmers who are more successful with their orchards than is Mr. PULLIAM.

HOWELL & ESTES have been receiving large additions to their stock within the past few days.

Cotton. – Col. S. P. BURNS, of Farmersville, has placed upon our table a stalk of cotton containing several (word unreadable)... bolls. The stalk was pulled from a field cultivated by Mr. WOODALL, and lying in the eastern part of this county.

Fruits and Vegetables. – Our young friend, James P. DOWELL, has placed us under obligation for a mess of specimen Irish potatoes, the largest we have seen this year, and in fact large enough for any country or season. Now comes Joe FOREMAN, of Plano, with the finest ripe apples of the season. We have forgotten the variety, but remember the flavor as most delicious.

SCHOOLS

Communication from Weston. Mr. Editor. – .....On last Thursday and Friday, ....we had the pleasure of attending the examination exercises of the Weston male and female High School, and we were both astonished and delighted at the great proficiency exhibited by the pupils. .....the whole exercises were conducted with ability and success. DEATHS

Silas HARINGTON, an old and respected citizen of Lebanon, in this county, died on last Saturday, from an attack of pneumonia.

From the Observer we learn the death by drowning of Charlie MILLS, nephew of Col. R. Q. MILLS, and son of Captain Charles MILLS, deceased, aged fourteen years.
