Eugene HOUGHTON, of Farmersville, passed through on Wednesday last en route to Wynnewood, Indian Territory where he will remain for a month or so.
Dallas SPARLIN has been shipping some very fine hogs to the Dallas packery this week.
Dink CLARDY has been appointed to a clerkship in Collector DOGGETT’s department.
Mr. TAYLOR’s barn was burned last Friday evening about dark, together with contents near Celina.
CHURCH NEWS
Rev. A. E. BATEN, pastor-elect of the Baptist church, will preach at the opera house on next Sunday morning and night.
DEATHS
It is with pain that we announce the death of Capt. W. C. ROBINSON, at his home near Farmersville on Friday last after an illness of several weeks duration. Capt. Robinson was a pioneer of Collin county, and liberally imbued with the manly traits which distinguished his class. He leaves a wife and children and many friends to cherish his memory.
Homicide. Last Saturday night George Williams, colored, was shot and fatally wounded by Wallace STIFF, at the medicine show in the eastern part of the town. [STIFF] had an examining trial on Tuesday and was held in a bond of $3,000.

GENERAL ARTICLES AND NOTICES
The Australian Store, Mr. H. R. CAMP, Proprietor, is a new enterprise to our people, and has been crowded during the week. Call in and take a look.
Our former townsman, Charles BATTLE, now of Sherman, has been in the city a good portion of the week.
We regret to announce that the splendid barn on the farm of Capt. W. L. BOYD, some two or three miles west of town, was destroyed by fire one day this week. It is supposed to have been set on fire by electricity, by which it was lighted.
W. M. SHIRLEY has been appointed county surveyor by the commissioners court, Vice CLARDY resigned. Mr. SHIRLEY is a native of this county, who, by application, has fitted himself for life’s duties, and merits the promotion.

Maj. H. BUTCHER and G. W. FORD, of Allen, dropped in on us a few minutes Monday. They are highly pleased at the improved prospect of wheat grazing and crops in their neighborhood.
F. H. WELCH went west a few weeks back “to grow up with the country,” but concluded he did not want to grow any more.
F. M. BOUNDS of Weston, was in the city on Thursday. He reports peace and plenty in his neighborhood, money being scarce, however.
The barn of Bristow SMITH, in the Flats, was burned Tuesday night, causing loss of vehicles, farm implements and a good lot of corn.
Plano. The large planing mill owned by C. F. SAIGLING was set on fire by an incendiary, but was discovered in time to be put out with but small damage.

CHURCH NEWS
There will be no services at the Episcopal church on Sunday, the 24th owing to the sickness of Rev. Dr. BROUSE. The Dr. hopes to be able to have the services on Christmas morning.
The Baptist church will hold a New Years’ service in their new meeting house on Sunday, 31st day of this month at 11 a.m. A. E. BATES, Pastor.

MARRIAGES
Mr. Wm. VAUGHAN and Miss Lillie SCOTT were married by Justice ANDREWS at his office on Wednesday last. Quite a number of friends were present to witness the ceremon;y.
Mr. W. H. WATERMAN and Miss Kate HOLMES, and Mr. S. T. SEALEY and Miss Mattie HOLMES, were married at the residence of the brides’ parents in east Denton county on Thursday evening last.
DEATHS
An old settler, in the person of Mrs. Katy MELTON, relict of David MELTON, died near Allen on Thursday last.
Van Alstyne. The 15 month old child of W. L. WOOLDRING swallowed concentrated lye. It died shortly afterward.
J. D. HOWARD, an old citizen of McKinney, and father of our townsman, Dick HOWARD, died at San Diego, Cal., on Saturday last. Some six or eight months since he had a stroke of paralysis, and it was expected to prove immediately fatal, but he improved so much that a few weeks back he had gotten so he could get out of bed and dress himself, when it is presumed, a second stroke followed.
