Combined Their Papers Nearly 28 Years Ago.
Tom W. PERKINS and Walter B. WILSON formed business partnership July 15, 1906 under firm name of Perkins & Wilson, Editors, Publishers, and Proprietors of the Daily Courier-Gazette and Weekly Democrat-Gazette. The firm is one of the oldest, continuous concerns without change in any line of business in the entire county.

Tom W. PERKINS began his newspaper career on the Wylie Rustler, which he established in 1891 and sold in 1897. He acquired the Weekly Gazette, McKinney, in August 1897, from Clint THOMPSON, who established it on May 4, 1886. On March 17, 1899 Mr. Perkins launched the Daily Gazette. He published his Weekly at the county seat nine years and Daily for seven years, prior to consolidating them with Walter b. WILSON’s Daily and Weekly papers on July 15, 1906.

Walter B. WILSON entered newspaper work on June 1, 1894, immediately after concluding, on the last of May, attending school at the old McKinney Institute. He began as local editor and solicitor on the Weekly Democrat, then owned by F. C. THOMPSON. On July 12, 1900, he became equal partner with Mr. THOMPSON. In 1901, THOMPSON & WILSON purchased the Daily Courier and Semi-Weekly Courier publications from C. R. BALL. In 1902, J. Frank SMITH bought a third interest in the Weekly Democrat, that had absorbed the Semi-Weekly Courier and in the Daily Courier which they continued to publish. Mr. SMITH and Mr. WILSON acquired F. C. THOMPSON’s third interest in the two papers in 1904, and about two years later Mr. SMITH sold his half interest in the papers to Mr. WILSON, who combined them on July 15, 1906, with the Daily and Weekly Gazette, under the firm name of Perkins & Wilson, publishers of the hyphenated papers as still appearing.

Mr. and Mrs. John HILL have gone to Sherman to attend the bedside of their son, Jack HILL, who was painfully burned Tuesday. Jack, who is agent for the Sinclair Oil company in Sherman, received severe burns on his hands and face when he attempted to remove some trucks from the warehouse which had caught on fire. He fell into the fire.

J. W. THOMAS, born January 19, 1826, died Nov.3,1906, established the McKinney Messenger in 1859 and discontinued it about 1875.

Have Taken Democrat-Gazette for Half Century.
Frank M. NEELY is a charter subscriber of the [newspaper] having commenced with the first issue of the Democrat when it was established, February 7, 1884. Mr. NEELY came to Texas when a young man and settled in the Vineland community. He married Miss Laura SCOTT, daughter of A. J. SCOTT, a pioneer settler of that community. Mr. and Mrs. NEELY continued to make their home about seven miles northwest of McKinney until a few years ago when they moved to Jacksboro, their present home. They are the parents of Claude d. NEELY, manager of the Coca Cola manufacturing plant at McKinney. They occasionally come back to visit their son and family in McKinney and their many old friends and relatives in the Bloomdale community where they spent most of their lives.

The hustling Cotton Mill Comets girls’ basketball tam, coached by Hack MILLER and managed by Bob Bryan, won their thrid straight victory of the season over the Princeton High Pantherettes by the ...score of 47-7. Beautiful sweaters in school colors, were awarded fourteen letter members of the McKinney High Lions 1933 football squad and to the sponsor, Miss Neva McBEE; W. E. Broken Arm.
Billy GEE is in the hospital where he underwent an operation on his broken arm again. The arm was broken in an auto wreck several months ago and was not healing right. Mr. GEE is an expert leatherworker [sic] connected with the George JAMES Hardware and Implement store.

Johnnie HARLIN eighteen-year old son of J. J. HARLIN of the Bloomdale community is a patient in the McKinney City hospital following an attack of pneumonia.

The McKinney branch of the Paris Wholesale Grocery company is ably managed by L. R. HOOVER and assisted by his son, R. B. HOOVER who are both prominent in local civic and social affairs.

Bennett CAPPS, an esteemed farmer living on the Greer land in the Viney Grove No. 2 community, was brought to Dr. BURTON’s sanitarium in McKinney Wednesday, suffering rom a badly injured eye. While working on some machinery, a bolt flew off and hit his eye with such a force that the ball was bursted and the member may have to be removed.

Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DOOLEY and daughter, Miss Mary visited friends in Farmersville Wednesday.

Mrs. Annie Elizabeth HARKNESS, 75 ....died at her home Wednesday.[For complete story, see Obituary page at this site]

Mr. and Mrs. A. W. MILSTEAD of North Church street, announce the marriage of their daughter, Helen, to W. L. ROGERS, Jr. of Dallas, They were married February 3 by Dr. T. HOLCOMB in the First Baptist church of Oklahoma City. Mrs. ROGERS was graduated from the McKinney High school in 1928 and later attended Oklahoma university.

McKinney 25 Years Ago – From the Files of the Daily Courier-Gazette. (Feb. 8, 1909).
Prof. F. G. JONES is at the bedside of his mother, Mrs. W. J. JONES who is critically ill at her home in Waco.
County Attorney C. A. LEDDY of Greenville is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. LEDDY in McKinney today.
P. Q. RUSSELL was a welcome caller at the Daily Courier-Gazette and Weekly Democrat-Gazette office today. He has lived on his good farm at Clearlake for the past twenty-six years.
Col. Jot WOODFALL of Verona will leave McKinney tomorrow for Knox County, West Texas, to visit his son, Dr. O. L. WOODALL. He expects also to visit another son, Wade W. WOODALL, at Hereford, Texas.
Capt. John H. BINGHAM, veteran McKinney journalist is now living in retirement. He was owner and editor of the McKinney Enquirer, established in 1866 and which paper he bought in 1867. In 1896 he voluntarily discontinued the paper.

E. A. ROBINSON, Clearlake, renews another year for Collin county’s oldest published newspaper. We regret to learn that Mrs. ROBINSON is a sufferer from paralysis and hop to hear of her improvement.
Alfred M. SCOTT prominent McKinney business man was in Dallas on business today.
Mrs. Ed. THROCKMORTON of Cass county came here to attend the funeral of her brother, J. D. STIFF, yesterday.
“Grandpa” William MURPHY died January 29 at Murphy, this county which villiage was named for him. He was ninety-three years old, and was buried in the Murphy cemetery. He was the father-in-law of ex-Sheriff J. L. MOULDEN.
J. L. CHAPMAN, cashier of the First National bank at Farmersville was notified today of the death of Jack MURCHISON at Llano, Texas. He was taken there by K. M. MOORE for the benefit of his health. He was only twenty-three and was the son of A. T. MURCHISON, deceased.

Mrs. W. S. WYSONG has returned from a visit with her son, Dr. Scott WYSONG, and her sisters, Misses Sue and Edna DUDLEY in Houston. She also visited her son, Dudley WYSONG, who is a student in Tulane University.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary M. TODD, 91 years old, who died Thursday morning at the home of Mrs. Mary ADAMS in Van Alstyne were held Friday morning at Dripping Springs. Mrs. TODD was born July 31, 1842 in Kentucky. She had been a resident of Texas for sixty years. Surviving her are several relatives of Van Alstyne.

Henry C. MYRICK, local McKinney business man drove away from Scotty’s blacksmith, auto and truck making shop Saturday morning in a brand new Ford truck with a truck body made by C. A. TURRENTINE, expert woodworker who keeps busy at such work and in the upholstering of autos.

Friends in McKinney will be pleased to learn that Oran and John KIMBRIEL, two former McKinney boys, but now of San Antonio, have embarked in business in the Alamo City... in a produce company. They are graduates of Boyd high school here and attended Baylor university at Waco. John married Miss Helen Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Linus SMITH of this city while Oran married a Van Alstyne girl.

H. W. HENLEY is the new manager of the McKinney Dry Goods Company. He has resided in McKinney for nearly five years.

Sam VERMILLION of the Altoga community was greeting friends in town...Rev. H. F. VERMILLION, pastor of the First Baptist church at Neva dropped by to see us.

Tom W. PERKINS the versatile editor of the McKinney Daily Courier Gazette devoted two columns of his paper last week to enumerate the different offices might enter as a candidate and then closed his article by saying he wasn’t going to make the race for any office.

Claud FRANCIS [has opened a seed business in McKinney.

Former Sheriff Ed BLAKEMAN, ever smiling around among his friends - and they are legion - is being solicited to make the race for tax collector and assessor of Collin county.

Sheriff G. J. S. WALKER comes before our readers today with his formal announcement for re-election to a second term as Sheriff of Collin county. Mr. Walker has been a resident of the county for forty years, having been engaged in business here most of that time.....

Miss Mildred LAUGHLIN, daughter of Mrs. W. M. WORSHAM, North Kentucky street, and Mr. Frank WALTZ of Denison were united in the holy bonds of matrimony at the home of Dr. E. E. KING, Saturday evening. Dr. KING who is pastor of the First Baptist church of this city, officiated.

Great County Fair M’Kinney, Oct. 8, 9, 10, 11.
Persuant to call of President Perry BURRUS the officials of the executive committee of the Second Annual Fair Association was held in Mayor FINCH’s office Monday afternoon. Those present were: J. Perry BURRUS, F. C. THOMPSON, Will J. RHEA, Clarence W. SMITH, Walter R. WILSON, and Mayor H. A. FINCH.

Schools:
Prof. Jack R. RYAN, city superintendent of McKinney Public schools, announces that at the close of the fifth month of the present school year, a total of 2,256 boys and girls were enrolled in McKinney city schools......Supt. RYAN is elated over the progress being shown in the six white and one colored school of the city and says that the second term is getting off to a satisfactory start.

M’Kinney Women View Mural Paintings.
The following McKinney ladies went down to Dallas Sunday afternoon to view the mural paintings that are sponsored by the Public Works Administration and were opened to the public at the Dallas Art Institute: Mrs. F. L. BURTON, Mrs. Thos. F. CRAIG, Mrs. M. H. GARNETT, Miss Maude WILCOX, Mrs. George WILCOX, Miss Nannie Dee DYER, Miss Mary DOOLEY, and Mrs. Joe E. LARGENT. Among the paintings exhibited were some of Fred KLEPPER, formerly of McKinney.

County Tax Assessor F. T. N. (Nick) HOOD of this city says that the eight assessors connected with his office in as many precincts over the county, are busy assessing property in every community. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. LAYMAN and two little daughters, Ina Ruth and Annie Louise have returned to their home in Prosper after visiting their mother and grandmother, Mrs. J. J. WATSON, AND SON, Johnnie, 1107 North Sherman street. They found their brother Johnnie WATSON to be improving from a severe cut on one of his feet sustained....while chopping wood.

John Wesley CROWDER ....died Monday Morning, February 5 after a year of feeble health. [For complete story, see Obituary page at this site.] Announcement of the marriage of Leonard M. MILSTEAD and Miss Lucille PARKER both of this city, has been made. Mr. MILSTEAD is a son of J. B. MILSTEAD, and is one of our city’s best known and highly esteemed young business men. The bride ....is a daughter of A. W. PARKER of Blue Ridge. The couple were married January 21 in Sherman.

B. D. RODGERS Golden Wedding Anniversary. Many relatives present - pictures made of the group.
Pictures were taken of the eighty-five relatives and friends present on the Golden Wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. b. D. RODGERS of Fayburg, held at their big farm home in that community, Wednesday, Janruary 31. Their five children and grandchildren arranged for the anniversary celebration.
The five children present were W. B. DUCKWORTH and J. W. DUCKWORTH, F. A. RODGERS, Durant, Oklahoma, Mrs. W> D> BRASWELL, Blue Ridge, and Mrs. Cora MASSIE who is residing at home with her parents. Mrs. D. D. FRESLEY of Escondido, California was the only child unable to be present. In addition to the children present, there were also twenty-eight grandchildren and eight great-=grandchildren. W. A. MONTGOMERY, a brother of Mrs. B. D. RODGERS and Mrs. Willis DRAIn, a sister both of Blue Ridge were also present.
Waitresses were: Grace McCALL, Opal KEMP, Mittie McCALL, Modean MULDER, Ione McCALL and Rosa MULDER.
Susan Ann MONTGOMERY (Mrs. Rodgers) was born January 2, 1859, two miles southeast of Blue Ridge. She was twice married. Her first marriage was to Mr. DUCKWORTH in 1874. She was next married, January 31, 1884 to B. D. RODGERS. The latter was born in Cherokee county, North Carolina, May 25, 1858 and later moved to Tennessee. He came to Texas in 1882.
