MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES
(This article is included for background and historical interest.) Collin County. It becomes a pleasant duty to give to our readers the statistics of the continued growth and prosperity of Collin county during the year 1877. In the absence of a census, we are compelled to resort to the scanty but reliable information afforded by the county records. From the tax books we learn that the total assessed value of the property of the entire county amounts to $5,575,170. During the year 1876 it amounted to $4,413,320. A portion of this increase is attributable to the fact that all lands in the county have to be assessed in the county and not at Austin, as heretofore. The total number of persons liable to poll tax in 1876 was 3,521, while in 1877 it amounted to 4,125. During the year 1876 about 223 marriage licenses were issued by the clerk of the county court, while about 309 were issued in 1877. At least one-fifth more deeds and mortgages were recorded in 1877 than in 1876.
Narrow Escape.�Last Saturday evening the alarm of fire was sounded, and upon hastening in the direction of the alarm the residence of Mr. ELDRIDGE was discovered to be on the point of catching from a defective chimney. The wind...was very high and blowing directly toward the square. Had the fire not been checked, the whole town would have been in danger.
Dissolution. The firm of DOUGLASS & WILKINSON is this day dissolved by limitation [sic]. Debtors must settle their accounts or pay costs. Signed. F. M. DOUGLASS, J. C. WILKINSON. Weston, January 1st, 1878.
J. B. STIFF is building a handsome residence on the site where the residence of Captain R. M.
BOARD was burned down a few weeks since.
J. S. STOVALL, the �old reliable� saddler of North Texas, has purchased the stock of R. E. GIBBONS, and yet added much other material. He now has in stock 300 saddles, and harness till there is no room for more, all of which he will sell for the next thirty days, at prices far below what the same goods can be purchased for anywhere in North Texas.
Our old friend, Hogan WITT, dropped in upon us on New Year�s day, paid his twelfth year�s subscription to the Enquirer, and for two copies to go to distant friends during �78. Such visits are always appreciated by the printer.
In passing HUNSTABLE�s Shoe Store, we have noticed many pairs of find boots, shoes and slippers for the holiday trade. They always are busy, both making and selling goods.
Stock Law Election. Notice is hereby given that an election will be held at Millwood and Bear Creek School House in Collin county, on Saturday, 29th day of December 1877 for the purpose of determining whether hogs, sheep, and goats shall be allowed to run at large.......Witness my hand. CHURCH NEWS
Concert. � The concert given by the young ladies and gentlemen for the benefit of the Presbyterian Sunday school, at the court house on Thursday night, was a grand success. There was a good audience and the concert is spoken of in the highest terms. Another performance is given this evening. Let all attend.

Lucky. � George CAMERON came up town on Wednesday morning with a grin on his face reaching back to 1877. Upon enquiry we learned that he had a boy at his house weighing precisely 12 pounds. George�s friends have hopes of his ultimate recovery.
Our artist, Mr. L. MOBERLY, while on the depot platform at Dallas on Tuesday night, waiting for the train, was jostled by a man who, at the same time snatched his watch and made off in the crowd. He regrets the loss of his watch, chain and some other mementos attached, more on account of past associations than of intrinsic worth.
W. L. WILSON, near Weston, on New Year�s day, slaughtered a Poland China barrow, 2 years and 7 months old, weighing 678 pounds >i>[unreadable word].
A carload of very fine hogs were shipped to St. Louis last Saturday by Messrs. FOX & HAND.

Wm. FEAGLE, confined in jail on the charge of embezzlement, has been admitted to bail in the sum of $800.
Judge BLEDSOE arrived in the city Sunday night and proceeded to organize the Court on the following morning.
Capt. E. R. STIFF and Mr. FOX made a shipment of eight car loads of cattle from this station to St. Louis on Thursday last.
Judge R. R. GAINES took the place of Judge BLEDSOE on Tuesday and will hold court for the remainder of the term, we presume.
William Frost � Arrested for Murder. After ten years wanderings brought back to stand trial. On December 20th, 1867, Wm WARDEN was shot, near what is now known as Sister Grove Postoffice, receiving a severe wound in the arm, necessitating amputation, from which he died about four weeks afterwards. Circumstances pointed to Wm FROST, a neighbor of WARDEN, as the one who fired the shot. He immediately left the country, since which time nothing was heard of him till about December 20th 1877. Deputy Sheriff WARDEN, son of the deceased, together with his brother-in-law, John P. HUNTER, started for Palo Pinto county, where FROST was reported to be living..... ....The posse had little difficulty in finding the man and ...placing themselves between him and his arms effected his arrest with little trouble, .... they left immediately, the party arriving at McKinney on Sunday morning, January 6th.

OBITUARIES
John W. BROWN was born February 12th, 1849 in Dallas county. He was the son of S. P. and Mary BROWN. He professed religion when about 18 years of age, joined the M. E. Church, and lived a worthy and devoted member for several years.....But wicked companions led him back into a giddy and careless world. He was married to Adelia A. MATHEWS in February, 1870, and continued in worldly pleasure until a short time before his death. ....He was young, buoyant, full of life, and the fatal disease Typhoid Fever preyed upon his vitals and waved him away, seemingly all too soon. The writer was present the night before he died and heard him sing, �I am so glad that Jesus loves me, & c...� [written by] Mollie F. BROWN, Plano, Texas, January 8th, 1878.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES
---We learn that some miscreant threw a rock through the window of Capt. John JOHNSON�s residence one night last week, and barely missed the head of his daughter, who was near the window.
---We are told that Captain John JOHNSON has received some threatening letters, in which he is warned that himself and three of his neighbors are to be burned out.
---Tandy FOLSOM, who killed George KENDALL in this place last summer, was arrested in Dallas last week under charge of selling cattle, not his own, in the Indian Territory.
---J. S. STOVALL received a severe wound in the hand on Sunday last from the bite of a dog. His watchdog and other were fighting, when attempting to seperate them, his own dog made a grab at him and caught his hand, the tusks passing througfh the thick part between the thumb and index finger.

Mr. A. H. WEAVER, of Callahan county in writing to his step-father, M. ASHLOCK, of this county, says he had just returned from the burial of a lady aged 53 years, who had a short time previous, given birth to her thriteenth child, a fine healthy boy, weighing twelve pounds.

Mr. C. D. BATES has purchased the stock of Womack, Thomas & Co., Sherman and will make that his point of business. We regret to lose him as a citizen...
Dr. WILEY requests that the party who carried off his little rat terrier last Wednesday will return the dog, and take his horse.
Thomas RILEY, the murderer of Mike PEAT, who was recently convicted of the homicide, and sentenced by Judge FLEMING, to an imprisonment of ninety-nine years, has been re-arrested near Weatherford.
R. H. BROWN, of Plano, has been in the city this week buying up all the calves to be had.
Among other fine stock, we note the arrival on Monday last, of a fine thoroughbred Durham bull calf for Mr. George HERNDON, of this vicinity.
Messrs. Geo. HERNDON, S.H. FOX, John BARNES, and James Field, shipped several car loads of very fine cattle south on Monday last.
Mr. BARNES requests us to say to those rendering lands for taxes, that it is necessary to give the name of the original grantee in order to prevent confusion in the rolls.
In the trial between Abe RHINE and corporation to dissolve injunction, Judge GAINES withholds, for the present, his decision.
Isaac Crouch has been receiving large invoices of furniture within the past few days, and is anxious to sell it off.

Clark Heard returned on Friday morning, after being water bound in Arkansas, near Van Buren, for the last ten years. He has come to stay this time.
Another Railroad Accident: ...a train on the Central road ran over the fine Durham dog belonging to Adam HEDGECOXE, free democrat of color, and cut his tail off just behind his ears. This sad accident will be deplored by all....who feel that there is a great scarcity of dogs in McKinney... and we can not well afford to spare one. We learn that Adam will sue the company for damages.
Mr. C. S. HAGGARD, of the Plano neighborhood, dropped in ....and reports the wheat looking well, save in flat, low land, where it seems inclined to turn yellow.
The alarm of fire was given on Wednesday evening and caused considerable excitement. It was caused by the flue of Mr. HUNSTABLE�s house catching and burning out.
John COFFMAN ...predicted that the present would be a good wheat year. So far his prediction holds good.
R. C. McKINNEY & Co. Have bought out the stock of clothing of J. E. HOWELL and will continue the business at the old stand.
Last Monday the surveying party of the Sabine Pass and Northwestern Railroad reached Farmersville, and run [sic] their line about 150 yards east of the public square in the direction of BAILEY Junction.
Col. Charles DeMOISE, of Clarksville was in the city last Saturday .... and purchased a fine shorthorn calf and pure blooded swine from Mr. Isaac F. GRAVES.
Mr. C. L. SMITH, of Rock Hill, this county, sold in Dallas two beeves [sic], one weighing 1,600 and the other 1,520 pounds.
The neighborhood of Dr. FELAND was visited by a very severe hail storm on Tuesday which covered the ground completely in two minutes from the time it commenced falling.
News from Plano: Our old friends Wes, KIRBY and John MARTIN were in Plano Saturday last. They ...know what it was to eat buffalo meat, lean or fat, dried or fresh on the frontier years ago. Mans. WILMETH of old Buckner, Poverty Valley, Collin county has a nice lot of early peach trees.
Father RUSSELL and old Mr. FOWLER are in feeble health, old age is mostly the cause. Messrs. John HARRIS and Jeff. WYATT are fixing to build nice residences in this place. A gentleman from Kentucky has purchased the George WILSON survey, and part of Capt. Billy FITZHUGH�s head-right just west of town.
Jordon O�STRAUGHN and Capt. GOODNER, of McKinney .... are now in the field for county and state offices.
Fire: Barn and Stock Burned. On Friday morning...the splendid barn of Capt. E. R. STIFF, about three miles west of McKinney, together with a fine imported draft stallion, a boar, and a small amount of forage was destroyed by fire. .....it was the finest barn in the county. The stallion belonged to young Mr. DUNCAN and had only been in the country a few days.
Lucas F. SMITH, formerly District Attorney for this Judicial District, but now of Dallas, was in the city this week in attendance at court.

A man, giving the name of ROGERS [tried] to sell a horse at so small a price as to create suspicion. He was arrested and..... has admitted that his name is not ROGERS, but W. A. LEE. He says he hails from Collin county, and claims that he bought the horse from a man by the name of SPURGEON.
The officers are now satisfied that the mare was undoubtedly stolen.

Accident.�Mr. L. J. GRAVES was badly bruised last week by being dragged by his horse. He attempted to jump off, and not getting his foot clear of the stirrup, was dragged some distance.

Jos. WADDELL met with a painful accident last Sunday morning by having his horse to fall while in a gallop, and rolling over him.
A Giant. --There is a youth living in the eastern portion of this county, named Henry GIBSON who is 15 years old, six feet and four inches high, weights 180 pounds, and wears number eleven shoes. If any of our friends can beat Collin County stock we would like to hear from them.
Notice of Dissolution. The co-partnership heretofore existing between H.A.R. HORTON and J. R. HORTON, under the firm name of H. HORTON & Co. Is this day dissolved by mutual consent. H.A.R. East Line and Red River Railroad. On the 30th ult., Col. Thos H. MURRAY of this city [McKinney] inspected the third section of 16 � miles of our East Line railway, terminating at Pittsburg. The East Line now has fifty miles of road completed. The future route of the East Line is from Pittsburg to Sulphur Springs, Greenville, Farmersville, McKinney, Denton, and Decatur....

CHURCH NEWS
Elder CASKEY proposes on next Sunday to tell the people of McKinney what he knows about hell.
The attendance at the Presbyterian Sabbath School on last Sunday evening was about one hundred and fifty. There are fifteen teachers and classes, and the officers are Dr. J. S. MOORE, Superintendent; Wm. HUNSTABLE, Secretary and Treasurer.
DEATHS
Mrs. NAILE, wife of T. J. NAILE, died last Saturday afternoon, after a protracted sickness.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES
From Plano. [extracted in full]. This fine weather has given an impetus to the cotton market, our streets have been lined with wagons to-day loaded with the staple. Prices ranging from 9 � to 10.25. We have shipped about 3000 bales this year already, and will reach 3500 or 4000.
Plano has a commercial college. First term commences the 1st of this month. Prof. PREWITT is teacher, and he is well qualified, and we think he will make it a success, he has some 15 students already. A thorough course in penmanship, book-keeping, and commercial law is given. He deserves patronage and encouragement.
The vote on Local Option last Saturday in corporation, was 60 against local option and 34 for it; majority against it 26. Bill SKELTON has got a foot larger around the waist since, and says he hasn�t quit growing.
We will have a union Christmas tree at the M. E. Church. Everybody is invited and of course it will be a success.
Dr. BAKER talks of moving to Sherman, but we won�t believe it till he leaves.
We have been unable to obtain Hancock�s popular vote over Garfield. If you have it, please give it.
Here and there you can see a new house, or at least an old one, in process of improvement.
Plano is fast acquiring a substantial class of residences and ere long there will be improvements in our business houses. Frank. Plano, Tex. Dec. 9.

Wanted in the Collin Courts. Vince PACE, constable of precinct No. 2, arrested Tuesday evening a young man named Bose CLOUD, who is wanted to answer the charge of aggravated assault in the Collin county. Court. The assault ....was committed ...upon the person of James WADHEIL. He held a knife on WADHEIL and beat him over the head with his six-shooter, inflicting severe though not dangerous wounds.
Letter from Lebanon. Lebanon, Dec. 2nd, 1880. ..... It is right discouraging times at present, the snow and rain has ruined what cotton we had left in our fields, and that don�t quite fill the bill, here comes the epizootic and blind staggers to kill what few horses we may by chance happen to have.
JOHNSON & KIRKPATRICK started to Dallas this morning with the finest drove of hogs I have seen for years.... This firm has put up seven hundred and sixty-two bales of cotton this season. This is the brag gin in this county.
The new drug store under the management of Dr. POWERS, is doing a good business. PHILIPS & CAMEL has bought CALVER out and are running a family grocery.
M. PARTMAN, will commence his school next Monday at the Lebanon school house. We are going to have a Christmas tree. Yours, Goose Quill. .
