MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Big Beet.�Mr. A. H. SNIDER has shown us a garden beet raised by him, three feet long, 16 � inches around, and weighing 18 � pounds.

Ruanway Boys. From their home near McKinney, on December 3d, two boys of the following description. One, William Enoch STRICKLAND, aged 15 years, light hair, round faced, and blue eyes, a large scar under chin. The other, Howard Prater STRICKLAND, 14 years old, dark hair, long faced and blue eyes, large scar under right eye. I will pay a liberal reqard to any one who will detain them and give me information. R. C. STRICKLAND, McKinney, Texas.

New Calaboose.�Mr. A. McCLELLAN has been awarded the contract for building the new calaboose on the lot opposite the jail. It is to be 18 x 24 feet, two story, and to be of first-class material throughout, and will cost in the neighborhood of $1,500.

Miss Mattie WARE, sister of Mrs. Gabe BECK, arrived in McKinney, from Missouri on Friday morning last on a visit.

A south bound train on the Central road on the 4th inst. Set fire to the farm of W. N. HOLLINGSWORTH about nine miles south of Sherman and destroyed about six hundred bushels of corn and fodder, valued at between four and five hundred dollars.

A Pension. Old Uncle John L. LOVEJOY, who is now eighty two years of age, and who fought the Indians, at his own expense, in many cases...is still living near this city and is poor in his old age. His wife is also still living.....It was universally admitted that he was the best Indian fighter in the State in his day.

An attempt was made to burglarize the residence of Dr. GIBSON a few nights since. Dr. GIBSON had drawn a considerable sum of money from the bank on that day for the purpose of making a payment on the BENGE place, near the residence of I.D. NEWSOME, which he had purchased. The thief had undoubtedly observed this, and that night attempted entrance at the window, which aroused the doctor, who, in getting out of bed frightened the thief who made off.

DEATHS

Tribute of Respect. At a stated meeting of Plano Lodge, No. 235, A. F. And A.M. held in the Lodge Room at Plano.....the following preamble and resolutions were adopted. Whereas, it has pleased the All Wise Ruler of the Universe to remove by death from our midst ..in October, 1882, our worthy and esteemed brother I. K. KLEPPER.....Members will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. [Signed] Joe W. BEVERLY, F. J. VANCE, J. Y. LOVELACE, Committee.

Death of an Old Citizen. George W. BARNETT, a citizen of this county for some thirty years, died at his home near Plano, on the night of the 7th instant. He went to bed in his usual health, but about 11 o�clock he made complaint. Physicians were summoned but before their arrival, he was dead. It is supposed he died from affection [sic] of the heart. He was about 62 years of age, and a most excellent citizen. He leaves a wife and eight children. He will be buried at the Masonic burial ground near Plano, on Saturday at 12 o�clock.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Our old friends Captain DAVIES, of Millwood, and H. BRUMMETT, of Nevada, were in town this week. We regret to learn that most of the wheat about Nevada appears to be winter-killed.

J. J. THOMPSON left on Wednesday morning for his old Kentucky home to spend a few days with his relatives and friends.

Sawnie ROBERTSON, Esq. Of Dallas, was elected special judge to try the case of DOUTHETT vs. ROBINSON, Judge MALTBIE, being disqualified.

We are glad to learn that Mr. Isaac GRAVES has sold his two big mules, Tom and Rector. We hope never to see them again. We have our reasons for this.

Sad. Mishap.�Last week, near Weston, the team of a Mr. MILLER took fright, and running down the road, ran over some children of Mr. ROBINSON, who were playing in the road, hurting two of them seriously. The horses jumped over the little fellows, but the wheel struck one of them on the head, making a serious wound.

DEATHS

Killed by a Mule.�A little son of W. WHITAKER, living near Plano, was kicked on the head by a mule, one day last week, and died of his injuries on Friday last.

Mrs. E. A. CLYMER, wife of our former countryman, Col. Joseph CLYMER, died in St. Louis on the 22nd ult of pneumonia. They have resided in Collin since the war, till a year or two ago.

Our old friend, Wm. SACHSE, of Plano was in the city on Wednesday and ....his reports of the wheat crop at present are not very cheering.

T. J. MELTON, an old citizen of Collin, but now of Navarro, was in the city this week renewing old acquaintance.

Two brothers named GREEN, had an altercation with an old man named COATES, in Plano, on Thursday last. One of the brothers struck COATES on the head with a hatchet, fracturing his skull. Thinking they had killed the old man, they left.

Thos. H. EMERSON has begun the erection of a handsome addition on to his residence on South Kentucky street.

W. J. RAIZA has removed his blacksmithing and wood-shop to West Louisiana street to the old CROUCH furniture shop. He has in his wood shop, Jack HOWARD, well known as a most excellent and faithful workman.

DEATHS

Sudden Death. Mrs. Flaude E. WOODLIEF, wife of P. W. WOODLIEF, died very suddenly at the FOOTE House on Thursday night last. That morning she was at breakfast, and apparently well; during the day she was stricken with a spasm and died that night.

POLITICS

Hon. H. A. FINCH, our local representative, has introduced a bill to allow farmers to post their grounds against trespassers, and to repeal the law forbidding persons from netting quail on their own grounds.

E. W. GLASS, of Farmersville, was taking in the city this week.

Mrs. SMITH, of Madison, Wisconsin, daughter of Francis EMERSON, is in the city visiting her relatives. She will probably remain until spring opens. We wish her a pleasant sojourn.

Ben RHINE has one of the finest boys in Collin county. It does not look like him, but takes after its grand-father.

WARE & SUMNER killed .. a steer weighing, after being dressed, nearly 1000 pounds. This is the largest we have ever seen on the blocks in McKinney.

Died. In Plano on January 16th last, Miss Norah MULL, aged seventeen years. It has pleased our Maker to call from our midst one of our brightest jewels.....but we should not grieve for though she cannot return to us, we may go to her, there to dwell forever, where sorrow is not known.

Gin Burned. � On Wednesday about noon CUMMIN�s gin, situated near Hackberry church, took fire from some cause and burning rapidly, destroyed the building, gin stands, and a considerable quantity of cotton baled and unginned.

We understand that H. C. MACK, Esq. Had his coat containing money and valuable papers, burned at the time of the burning of CUMMIN�s gin.

A man named DILDIE, charged with murder in Lamar county, and horse stealing in Collin was brought to this city by deputy sheriff WARDEN this week to stand trial.

Mr. GERRISH came near having a fire at his mill on Wednesday. The roof had caught fire and was burning briskly when discovered.

P. TURBIT has sold out the Parlor Saloon to SKELTON Brothers, of Plano and Dallas, who will continue the business with the old employes. [sic]

T. T. EMERSON moved his family to his ranch, eighteen miles northwest of McKinney, this week.

DISTRICT COURT

Jeff HILDRETH who shot GIBSON at Blue Ridge, several months since, and was under bond for his appearance before the District Court, failed to put in an appearance, and was arrested at Texarkana by deputy sheriff Williams and returned to this county.

The case of the State vs. O.M. CALHOUN charged with assault with attempt to kill is now undergoing investigation in District Court.

Richard FLANIGAN, for horse-stealing, received five years in the penitentiary.

In the case of the State vs. Fayette MYERS, charged with attempt to murder, the jury failed to agree and were discharged.

Our people will regret to learn that Hon. J. R. COWLES, of Sherman, has become hopelessly insane, through induration [sic] of the brain. He had gone to Hot Springs, Ark., in the hope of finding relief, but dispatches from that place report his case hopeless. His friends will have him sent to the Asylum at Austin.

W. S. WATSON, upon the charge of stealing sundry horses, was sent to the penitentiary for ten years.

Mr. ARON left last Sunday for the North, where....he will apply himself to the purchase of new spring goods for the coming season.

R. BROWNLEE, charged with theft, was given five years in the penitentiary this week.

Melissa Items: Miss Mattie RAINEY, of Richardson, was up last week on a visit to her mother. ---Little Minnie SIMPSON, who has been on extended visit to the family of Mr. Jno. NICHOLSON, has returned to her home at Sherman. � Mr. LEIGH, a brother of our late Mr. Gerard LEIGH, arrived last night fron England. He did nt hear of his brother�s death until he reached Melissa, having left England a few days before the sad event. --- Elder A. M. DOUGLASS is building a residence. The house now occupied by his family has been sold to Mr. P.H. BATEMAN who contemplates moving to Melissa to educate his children. � Mrs. QUAIN is enlarging her residence. � Mr. Jas. GIBSON is now on a visit to his son, J. E. GIBSON. � Mr. A.F. RIGGLE left for Cleburne where he has a patient to treat for stuttering. � Mr. WATTS has returned from a visit to his father in Virginia accompanied by his sister. � Married, at the home of the bride�s parents, two miles east of Melissa on the 1st inst. At 4 o�clock by the Rev. Mr. FALKNER, Mr. Book WILSON to Miss EMMA HATLER.

Accident. � On Wednesday last, young DUGGER had a loaded shotgun in his hand and was standing in front of ARON�s store, when, by some means, it fell from his hand and was discharged, the load striking the boot heel of a man named BROWN, who, for a minute or so, thought he was badly shot.

Thursday morning last Joseph FOGEL, a nine-year-old boy in attempting to get on a moving train, was thrown to the ground and one of his feet severely mashed by the car wheels. He will be, at least, a partial cripple for life, and all other little boys should take warning and keep away from moving trains.

W. L. MUSIC, who has been in jail at this place, under charge of a most heinous offense, for nearly two years, was acquitted in the District Court last week.

Three prisoners, W.L. WATSON, Ben HUNSACKER, and Richard FLANNAGAN, sentenced for horse stealing started to the penitentiary from this place last Thursday.

Joe WADDILL ....has purchased a dwelling house, and he spoke of buying a baby carriage a few days since. He says he wants one for Gabe BECK, but then we know that is only to mislead.

I hereby warn all persons against trading for a certain due bill given to J. A. CLAYCOMB, dated about Nov. 7, 1881 for $500 signed by Jno. H. ORENDUFF. I have paid the debt in full and demanded my paper which he refuses to deliver me. J. H. ORENDUFF, McKinney, March 1, 1883.

Howe, Texas. For some time past Miss Mahalia DAVIS, a lady living in our little town, has been complainng of a severe pain in the head. To-day she is a raving maniac. It is hoped that the attack is only temporary.

J. B. ENGLEMAN, one of the best farmers in Collin county, says his wheat is improving in appearance very rapidly since the last rains.

M. M. C. Jones, having recovered from a serious spell of sickness, is now ready to serve his old friends and customers.

Mr. ABERNATHY�s �fawn-like� Jersey brought forth twin calves a day or two since. Abby is in luck.

Mr. Isaac F. GRAVES, his wife, and two colored servants, were bitten a few days since by a puppy, afterwards supposed to have rabies. Fearing evil results would follow, they repaired to the mad stone to have it applied.

Mr. John D. IRELAND announces for Mayor this week.

A lamp containing non-explosive coal oil, bursted at the residence of Wm. BAGLEY. No serious damage was done, however.

Fatal Accident. ...at a gin in the Melissa neighborhood, a youth by the name of CRAVENS, was caught by a belt, and crushed so badly that he died in a few minutes. In his effort to save himself he caught hold of Thomas REID, standing in reach and drew him in to the belt. REID�s shoulder was broken and otherwise badly hurt.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

On the second Tuesday in next August a notable gathering of ex-Confederates will assemble in this city. The old veterans of the association of ex-Confederate Missourians, of ROSS� Brigade, of ECTOR�s Brigade, and FITZHUGH�s regiment, have appointed that day to assemble here in joint re-union and.....again clasp the hands of friendship and re-count the stirring scenes of heroism, courage and fidelity, of toil, poverty and destitution, through which they have passed..... Col. Thos. H. MURRAY, President of the Association of ex-Confederate Missourians.

A young man, Henry G. TERRELL, living at McKinney ....was riding a fiery horse. His horse threw him on the ground injuring him quite severely.

Mr. John AIRHEART, of Melissa, was in to see us this week....

George HERNDON attended the Stock Raisers Convention at Fort Worth.

Our countyman, Capt. E.R. STIFF, addressed the Stockmen�s Convention at Fort Worth, in the interest of Durham cattle.

Mrs. BURNLEY has taken charge of the ALLISON House, and having thoroughly renovated it, will be prepared to take care of transient and regular boarders.

Dr. A. GIBSON has removed his office from the NEWSOME building to the room on the West Virginia street, opposite Dr. SMITH�s Drug Store where he may be found when not professioally engaged.

Gin Burned. The cotton gin of C.C. FROST, Jr., at Sister Grove, was burned last Saturday night. Mr. FROST estimates his loss at about $1,200. No insurance.

CHURCH NEWS

Rev. J. C. COWAN, Presbyterian Mnister of this place, has been adjudged a lunatic, and will, we presume, be placed under treatment at the Asylum.

DEATHS

John SCOTT, an old citizen of this county died at his home a few miles from this city, last Saturday, after an illness of several days.

Died. � Near Rock Hill, Collin county on March 6th, of Consumption, Mrs. Lizzie G., wife of John L. DAVIS. Natchez Democrat and Concordia Sentinel please copy. [Editor�s note.].

Fatal Accident. � On Thursday last, about 2 o�clock, while the wife of Hugh NELSON, living nine miles east of McKinney, on Ladonia road, was passing near the stove, her clothing took fire, and there being no one present, save the children, to assist her, burned entirely off her body, inflicting injuries which caused death in some fourteen hours.

T. J. GROUNDS an old and good citizen of Collin died at his residence in the north eastern portion of the county, on last Thursday night. Ten days before his death, lacking one or two hours, he attended the burial of a neighbor, and in conversation with some friends remarked that in about ten days his lease of life would expire. He was a good neighbor, and had a kind word for all.

Mrs. DULANEY lost her little girl, Annie, of pneumonia last Tuesday. The mother and another child are still sick of the dread disease.

A new National Bank at McKinney. The Collin County Bank has been merged into a National Bank, to be known hereafter as the Collin County National Bank of McKinney. At a meeting of the Collin County Bee-Keeper�s Association held in McKinney....it was resolved that the Association would invite all bee-keepers throughout the state to visit McKinney during the meeting of the State Association to be held here April 17 and 18th. Judge R. MALTBIE has gone to Sherman to hold the regular term of District Court.

G. DARLAND, who has been living a few miles east from town, was brought in and tried for lunacy on Tuesday. He has been suffering from his present attack about ten days, was very unmanageable and considered dangerous. He was adjudged a lunatic by the Jury and ....is to await an answer from the Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum as to whether he will be admitted to that institution.

Miss Fannie SIMS returned this week from St. Louis, where she had been for the purpose of selecting a choice lot of goods for her millinery establishment.

Jas. L. WOOD returned home this week from Frankfort, Ky., to visit his mother, who has been very sick for several weeks past.

Hon. J. H. HARLAN, of Woodland, Cal., and Miss Edith WILSON, of Bonham, Texas, are visiting the family of Mr. J. M. WILCOX, of this city.

Disgusting. � We would call the attention of our city authorities to the fact that some persons have been emptying filth and cleanings from hog-pens, between the depot and the city, on the vacant lot formerly occupied by ANDREWS� Lumbar Yard. First thing you know some one will have the cholera.

Sherman, Mar. 14. � Will DOUGLAS, a son of the sheriff, was thrown from his pony this evening and dangerously injured. The same pony threw him this morning from which he was insensible for fifteen minutes.

DEATHS

Obituary: Mrs. Ann E. HOCKETT died at her home, 3 miles Northeast of McKinney on the 8th day of March 1883, aged 42 years, two months, and 8 days. Her disease was typhoid fever, from which she suffered many days, but she bore her affliction with patience and Christian fortitude, until her gentle spirit left the tenament of clay to dwell with loved ones gone before .....The deceased joined the Methodist church, South, at the age of fourteen, lived a consistent member of that church until the day of her death. She leaves a husband, a large family of children, a father and mother and many friends to mourn her loss. And this we add by request: Tell them often of their mother. Kiss them for me when they wake. Lead them gently in life�s pathway, Love them doubly for my sake. This, the last night of my life, For tomorrow I shall never Answer when you call me wife, Fare thee well, my noble husband. Faint not neath the chastening rod. Throw your strong arm around our Children, Keep them close to you and God, He�ll be with you to the end. John HOCKETT.

Re-Union Notes. The ex-Confederate Missourians, ROSS� Brigade, ECTOR�s Brigade, FITZHUGH�s REgiment and the old settlers will all meet here on [2d Tuesday in August] and the occasion will be one long to be remembered.

Sherman, March 20. � This evening a young man named WISE, a clerk in ROLPH�s drug store, while delirious, jumped from a second story window to the ground, and was picked up insensible. The first physician who arrived examined him and pronounced him dead. Another physician came a few minutes after and injected ether in WISE�s arms and although to every appearance, life was extinct, he soon became conscious.

Sherman, March 20. � Jot GUNTER and his brother JULE, left of the Panhandle this evening. They go out to see the true state of affairs in referrence [sic] to the cowboys� strike.

News from Van Alstyne: Van Alstyne report[s] the prevalence of that dread disease - small-pox - in that village. Several of her citizens have left for Sherman seeking safety. .....some whole families have left the place. Dr. E. E. WINN, of Sherman, has visited the family of Dr. HUFFORD and pronounced the disease. ...... Since the above was written, one member of the family of Dr. HUFFORD, a little child, has died.

Mayor J. L. DOGGETT has returned from a trip to West Texas, more in love than ever before with Collin county.

Five members of the family of Mr. H. WESTBROOK, ...died in four days of measles.

J. H. DOMAN of this city, shipped a lot of hogs to El Paso and smiles at the sales.

Persons owing accounts to R. M. PAGE will please pay them to J. P. NENNEY at once. He is authorized to collect. I need the money; so please pay this at once.

I have bought Mr. PAGE�s Lumber Yard known as the �Eclipse Yard,� in McKinney. I shall endeavor to keep up stock and merit a share of the business. J. P. NENNEY.

From Millwood letter in Farmersville Mercury: Four horses were stolen from our neighborhood last Sunday night; two from Mr. Thos. SQUIB and two from Mr. S. ADAMS. The thieves took a saddle and bridle for each horse, one saddle from Mr. SQUIB, one from Mr. MONTGOMERY, and two from the RATCLIFF boys.

Jesse SHAIN has contracted for the erection of three brick store houses ....on the east side of the square.

C. D. BATES and SEAY & SEAY will also build two brick store houses on the same side.

John JOHNSON will cover the S. W. Corner of the square with a brick block.

Mr. Geo. CLIVE has been lying very low at his home, South of this city, for several weeks past.

C. C. FROST�s cotton gin (between Pilot and Sister Grove creeks) burned last week.

CHURCH NEWS

Church Supper. The ladies of teh Cumberland Presbyterian church will give supper at the court house on Friday evening, March the 30th, for the purpose of raising money to liquidate the indebtedness of their church property.

Since his removal to the Asylum, at Austin, the Rev. J. C. COWAN is said to be improving in health, and his recovery is hoped for with good reasons, by all our people. Mrs. COWAN and children have returned to their old home, at Bristol, Tennessee, carrying with them the hearty sympathy of this community.

DEATHS

Little Blanche, infant daughter of Judge T. C. GOODNER, of this city, died on Monday last of pneumonia and was buried Tuesday.

Obituary. Whereas, it has pleased the Dispenser of all event to remove from our midst our worthy brother, W. C. PRUETT, who was born in Smith county, Tennessee in the year 1819. Came to Texas in 1841. Professed hope in Christ in 1867, joined the Baptist church. Lived a consistent member and was church clerk of the same up to his death, was made a mason in 1879, continued a zealous member and devoted worker of the Lodge till his death....... Be it resolved that the sympathies and condolence of this Lodge be extended to the bereaved family..... [Signed] I. D. SELLERS, W. P. BILDERBACK, J. P. HIPP, Committee.

Obituary. Whereas it has pleased the Divine Architect of the universe to remove from our midst our worthy brother, T. J. GROUNDS, who was born in Arkansas, during the year 1821, was made a mason at Kentuckytown in Grayson county, Texas, and lived a zealous member and warm supporter of the same till his death which occurred March the 2, 1883.....Be it resolved, that the heartfelt sympathies of each member be extended to the bereaved family and friends of brother GROUNDS..... Fannin Co. Bonham News. J. B. ABERNATHY, this season at different places, has bought and shipped 10,000 bales of cotton. --- Bonham cast 212 votes against and 119 votes for prohibition. Isaac SNEATHER, said to be a Collin county boy, was arrested and jailed at Fort Worth on the 27th last, charged with stealing a watch.

W. R. SHORT and family have removed to Mineral Wells, where they will spend the summer.

John CAMERON and Gabe BECK have bought out FITZHUGH & LEWIS in the Livery business, and will run the old SHORT stable.

Several weeks since we made mention of some fine Cotswold sheep imported. We should have said by DALLAS SPARLIN instead of SPURGEON, as we had it.

It is stated that Z. E. RANEY will add machinery to the Union Mills and convert them into an Oil Mill.

DEATHS

Obituary. Died at his residence in Plano, March 10th, 1883 of bronchial pneumonia, Brother James S. CHADDICK aged 31 years. Brother CHADDICK was a native of the State of Louisiana and moved .....[here] about ten years ago, and for the last five years has been a citizen of Plano. ....The deceased leaves a large circle of friends and relations to mourn his loss. He was one of the charter members of Plano Lodge No. 977 K. Of H. And had filled nearly all the stations in the Lodge. One whose hand was ever ready to assist those in want. .....in his death this lodge has lost a true and worthy brother, his family an affectionate husband and father, the community a worthy and good citizen. MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Mrs. NORVAL, Miss Ella JOSSENBERGER, and Miss JOHNSON, who reside in West Sherman, went fishing in little Post Oak creek, a short distance below the bridge on the Whitesboro road......and almost drowned.

An Outrageous Act. On Friday night about 9 o�clock in the town of Pilot Point, Miss Hattie SOUTH was on her way home with her little brother from an entertainment at Prof. STRONG�s Academy and while she was passing in the darkness, three men on horseback rode through the middle of the street firing pistol shots as they went. One of these shots...struck Miss SOUTH, passed through her heart and killed her instantly.

J. S. EWAN, formerly deputy sheriff of this county, now engaged in guarding convicts, was in the city on Wednesday greeting his many friends.

Messrs. BOARD, NENNEY, Collin Co. Bank, and J. P. DOWELL have put in a good dewer in front of their houses, which will carry of the water and improve the street in their front.

W. R. SHORT returned this week from the Mineral Wells, looking yet feeble from his recent prostrated sickness.

G. F. THOMAS, Esq. Of Plano, has moved to McKinney with his family and will make this his future home.

News from Nevada [town in Collin Co.] The best farming that has been done for some time....... was by Mr. GASSETT, YEATES & Bro. Who came over here in the fall of 1881 and bought a farm for ....$1,900. ----Mr. S. STINEBAUGH has sold out his stock of groceries to Dr. R. D. PHILLIPS who will continue to keep a stock of groceries with drugs at the old stand. --- Mr. James YOUNGER continues in the dry goods business at Nevada. � Mr. Wm NAYLOR & JONES Bros. Have put up a gin and mill at Millwood. --- Capt. J. D. NAYLOR has moved back on his farm at Millwood. --- There has not been anything heard from the horses stolen near Millwood.

DEATHS

Wm. WALKER, son of our fellow countyman, Isaac WALKER, died at Colorado City, on the 1st inst. Of congestion of the brain. His body...arrived at McKinney on the 3d and ....conveyed to Cottage Hill Cemetery for interment. Deceased was twenty-one years of age....unmarried, but leaves his aged parents, brothers and sisters to mourn his premature loss.

City Marshal OATS and deputy killed a mad dog at the Lumber Yard on Saturday. He had passed through town a few minutes before and no one knows whether other dogs were bitten or not.

Arrested. On Saturday last two men, J. O. SHORT, a school teacher in Sister Grove neighborhood, and Tobe GILES, a young man from same section were arrested by the city Marshal for disorderly conduct and were fined by the Mayor.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Charlie BUSH has contracted for the building of a nice residence in SHORT�s addition, south of town.

Jack WELCH returned this week from a short trip out on the Texas & Pacific road.

Miss Eva RHINE, of Bonham, is in McKinney, on a brief visit to her relatives and friends.

We were pleased to meet Judge CLYMER, of Sherman now, in our city this week. He has a splendid farm a few miles from town, and has been engaged in planting a large crop of corn.

The FORD Rabbit hunt will take place on Friday, 20th inst. At nine o�clock a.m. near the farm of Wash FORD. Everybody and their grayhounds are invited to attend, and participate in the hunt.

Francis EMERSON has lost wood for years past from ravages by somebody or something. He has at last concluded it was done by insects, and has erected a barbed wife fence as a protection against them.

Sheriff WARDEN and Marshal OATES arrested two men Thursday night for passing counterfeit dollars.

H. A. McDONALD and wife, J.C. COLEMAN and others took a short trip to Sister Grove Creek to fish and hunt this week. They killed several squirrels and found a straw hat box with a good sized fish which they purchased.

J. R. HORTON Esq., who lives eight miles southwest of Sherman, met with .....the burning of his dwelling house, with all its contents.

Melissa Items. J. B. SMITH returned home Tuesday last, after a stay of three weeks in Missouri. --- After an indisposition of several weeks Dr. KING is again convalescent. � Hon. W. W. MERRITT was in town Tuesday last. � The building formerly occupied as a hotel at this place is being remodeled and improved and will be occupied in the future by Messrs. OGILVIE and GRAVES as a store. � Miss Dora KING, of Sherman, who has been visiting the family of Mr. NICHOLSON, returned last week.

CHURCH NEWS

Bishop GARRETT preached as interesting sermon to an appreciative audience at the Presbyterian church on Sunday last.

A protracted meeting of great interest and large attendance has been in progress for many days, at the Methodist church, in this city.

Judge MALTBIE, who is holding District Court in Sherman, was down last Sunday, and occupied his usual seat in the church.

DEATHS

Obituary. Mrs. Fannie FORMAN, wife of Mr. Scott FORMAN, bron Aug. 22nd 1854, died April 7th, 1883 at the residence of her much esteemed Aunt, Mrs. MULL, of Plano, Texas. .....She was sick over three months. She bore her sufferings with great fortitude and patience. ....She leaves to mourn her irreparable loss, her widowed mother, who never had but the one child, a beautiful and sprightly little girl, of over two years, and last, but not least, a devoted husband. T. J. MILAM [conducted the services].

Died. Near McKinney, April 4th, 1883 Little Maggie, infant daughter of Woodson and Eugenie HILL, aged 9 months. ......Death has again entered this home and taken from them another little darling.

We are sorry to hear of the death, in Brown County, of the wife of A. J. McDONOUGH, a former old and good citizen of Collin County.

We regret to announce the death of George CLIVE, Sr., an old and valued citizen of Collin county. His death occurred on Thursday night 12th inst.

COLLIN COUNTY ESTRAYS

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

Gustavo HOBERY, of Denton, has been adjudged insane. He labors under the delusion a married lady of that city is his bride.

Tom King has sold his cattle in western Texas for $180,000 and will make his home in Greenville.

Pilot Point. Constable GLASSCOCK brought in yesterday, on an attachment, Bert BEATY, an important witness in the case of the shooting of Miss Hattie SOUTH by Gilbert DORAN. BEATY was in Collin County and doubtless hoped to escape giving in his testimony in the case.

J. H. DOMAN purchased in Denton county last week, 107 head of the best beef steers ever shipped from this country, so claimed. They were shipped to New Orleans.

The severe wind of Thursday did considerable damage in the western portion of the county. The Pleasant Ridge Church and Schoolhouse was blown down. At the EMERSON ranch, the wind also did some damage to outbuildings..... no one was killed so far as we have been able to learn.

Spurious Money Found. � This week Sheriff WARDEN obtained by law, a satchel expressed to one of the counterfeiters now in jail, and upon opening found $120 in spurious dollars.

The bond of the counterfeiters, BENDER and WILLIAMS was placed at $1,000.

J. B. LUCAS has sold out and will strike for Abilene in a few weeks.

A dectective shot at and afterward arrested a negro boy named Frank FAULKNER, on Tuesday last and carried him off. The boy had found the money thrown away by the counterfeiters and may have attempted to pass some of it.

A difficulty occurred at the saloon south side of public square, last Monday, between A. J. BOYD and Josh HERNDON. During the melee a shot was fired, but how or by whom we did not learn.

James BEAN, a young man residing near Denton, was found dead in the woods Monday. Epilepsy the cause.

Mr. Thomas E. BOMAR, proprietor of the Black Waxy, published at McKinney, offers his entire printing establishment for sale on account of ill health.

We passed out the Sherman road a couple of miles this week, and found that the boggy places had been covered with plank...George CARUTH deserves credit for this, more than any one man, as he started the ball, got up the money and gave much time to the matter.

Painful Accident. On Thursday morning a 10 or 12 year old boy, named WATTS, was running across the street, near the MORROW Block, when he fell and broke his arm. He had a bucket in his hand. The limb was set by Drs. SIMS and McAULAY.

The Palace � This is the name given by James WARE to his new saloon on the north side of the public square. The Billiard Tables are new and fine, and placed in a handsomely fitted room.

Miss Dixie CROOKS, daughter of Thos. J. CROOKS, is winning golden opinions from the press North as one of the most accomplished vocalists and musicians in the conservatory of Music, at Boston, where she has been attending school for over a year.

Religious Notice. Dr. MARSHALL will preach at the Presbyterian church on Friday evening, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning and evening.
