Whitesboro, Dec. 30. A very destructive fire broke out here at 2 o’clock this morning, totally destroying fifteen business houses, as follows: S. D. HALL’s building with goods, valued at $1000, insured $600.; J. C. McGILLICUDDY, groceries, loss fully covered; A. F. HOMBOOK, saloon and house, insured for $800, stock saved; B. M. GODFREY, building, insured for $500; J. M. BUCHANAN, drugs and jewelry, stock saved in a damaged condition; James McGILLICUDDY, groceries and house, insured for $600, stock well covered, partly saved; C. B. CLARK, drugs; house and stock a total loss, no insurance; J. W. MARSHALL & Co., saloon, building and stock a total loss. No insurance; G. M. BESSANT, groceries. Stock saved in a damaged condition, well covered by insurance; J. C. SIEVIER’s building is a total loss, no insurance; BYERS & LAWRENCE suffered a total loss; McWEELEY & Co., barbers, house a total loss, no insurance; S. H. HORTON had no insurance; N. G. WHITE’s saloon was insured, but the building is a total loss; Mrs. HEMMING’s milinery [sic] house is a total loss, stock saved; N. D. PREWITT’s house is a total loss, stock saved; T. MARNETT, hotel, insured for $10,000; ....... The conflagration is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary.

George WILSON has built a handsome residence on the Greenville road, opposite the Fair Grounds.

Prof. I. A. LOONEY is putting down some good gravel sidewalks in front of his school and residence on South Tennessee street.

We are glad to hear that the family of Mr. NENNEY, who were stricken with scarlet fever, are improving and that the disease has about run its course in the city.

Lost. A small Masonic breast pin. Finder will be liberally rewarded by leaving same at Davis & Wallace’s drug store.

Monroe HARRIS may be found at the new dry goods house of F. M. BALL & Co.

Our old friend and neighbor, W. P. POLLY, spread a most elegant dinner on Saturday last.

Charlie RICE of Plano, was in the city this week, shaking hands with old friends.

D. E. LONDON killed his hogs this week, Berkshire and Poland China, 500 pounds each was the weight.

Ben BURGESS, an old time citizen of .....[rest of short article is unreadable]

The Chinese laundry still holds forth on East Virginia street, under the management of Sam LEE.

J. A. MASSEY, road overseer on the Greenville road has done some good work in the fair grounds lane. It will make the lane passible [sic] hereafter in muddy times.

Wm. PERSOHN left this week for Taylor where he will take up his residence. We regret to lose him from our town.

We are told that Joe WADDILL is building a dwelling house and equipping it as the law directs..

C. C. ABERNATHY killed a Berkshire pig this week which weighed 524 pounds.

MIXON closed out his stock on Friday morning. Sheriff WARDEN acting as clerk, closed the entire stock out to the highest and best bidder.

J. H. DOMAN is building a new residence on is lot, south side of Tennessee street, opposite the SHORT Homestead.


CHURCH NEWS

There will be a public preaching at the Cumberland Presbyterian church every sabbath at 11 o’clock a.m. and 7 p.m. Everybody is invited to attend... S. R. CHADICK, Pastor.


MARRIAGES

Married. At McKinney, Jan 2, by Rev. Mr. HILL at the residence of Jno. C. COLEMAN, Mr. J. C. OUSLEY and Miss Ida CASE. All of Collin county. Geo. S. MORRIS, the courteous deputy county clerk, was married in Terrell last week. He and his wife will make McKinney their home.


DEATHS

Rev. C. A. STANTON an old and respected citizen of Collin county, was stricken with paralysis, at his home in Plano, last Friday night and died the following day. He was pastor of the Baptist church at Plano, at the time of his death.

Katie, the little daughter of E. H. And M. J. SHELMAN, died at Henrietta, on Tuesday last and was brought to McKinney Wednesday for interment.

We regret to announce the death of Capt. J. J. STAIN, of Plano. He was a good citizen, and leaves many friends to mourn him.

Reports from the southern portion of the county say that Emmet JOHNSON was shot and killed by Bob LEE, Jr., on Wednesday last. It is said the quarrel originated about a horse trade.

Murder of James E. STIFF. The parents ..... received information .... of his [James E. Stiff] death in Mexico. Inquiry has elicited the facts that he was murdered in the Sierra Madre mountains, Chihuahua, about the first of December by being struck several times with a stone while asleep. He had been working in the mines owned by Mr. KOWSKI, a relative and had started on a journey of about two days. His brother Houston STIFF has gone to the scene. The murdered man was a son of Burrul STIFF of this city, was born and raised in McKinney, aged 27 years.

The Collin County National Bank. ....held their annual election .... on the 8th inst. The following Board of directors were elected for this year: Dr. G. A. FOOTE, M. H. MARKHAM, W. L. BOYD, W. A. J. L. MOULDON, of Plano, was in the city on Monday and as is his custom about New Year’s dropped a couple dollars in the Enquirer’s contribution box. A. J. STINNETT & Co. Have purchased the stock of groceries of MACK & MACK and will occupy the same stand. The junior of the firm is Will TAYLOR, well known by our people. He is married now, and aims to “eat his bread in the sweat of his face”.

DAVIS & WALLACE have sold their drug store to C. N. ALBOTT & Co. Who will continue business at the old stand on West Louisiana street.


CHURCH NEWS

Gainesville, Cooke County. Fence-cutting has broken out in Cooke county in earnest. General HUDSON’s fence was cut last night. He owns all the land he has inclosed [sic]. The grass in Joe HARRIS'’ pastures was set on fire last night. L. C. HULLETT’s fence was also destroyed.

Denton County. $2000 Reward for the arrest and delivery to me at my ranch of each of the leaders of the band of men who cut my pasture fence. S. H. SKINNER.

...our old friend, C. A. GATES, of Valley View, Cooke county...comes to old Collin about once a year to see his old friends and relatives.

Guff WHATLY, a citizen of the free and independent state of Hunt, was in the city this week renewing old acquaintances.

The drug store of PENDLETON & BELL, Farmersville, came near burning on Tuesday. When discovered the roof was in a blaze, and it was by hard work that the building was saved.

A. HUNSTABLE is now at his home in this city [McKinney] very sick.

M. M. C. JONES left last Tuesday night for a trip to Little rock to begone [sic] 6 or 7 days.

Miss Neva STIFF returned Tuesday night from Waco, at which place she has been visiting relatives.

The scarlet fever has about run its course in our city, it is hoped. The children of Mr. John E. CAMERON are yet afflicted, but are improving.


MARRIAGES

Married, on the 18th inst. by the Rev. Mr. STERRETT at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. James HOUSTON, of Terrell to Miss Annie E. COLLINS of McKinney.


DEATHS

Annie McCurry, the first lady telephone operator of Sherman, died this morning at 9 o’clock in [that city].

“Grandma” SNIDER, well known to the old settlers of Collin county, died at her house in the northern portion of the county on Tuesday last.

Maggie, the little two-years-old daughter of P. C. and Mrs. TURBIT, died very unexpectedly last Wednesday, of cholera infantum.

We regret to learn of the heavy loss of Col Henry CARVER.... by the destruction of his barn, eight head of horses and 800 bushels of corn. It is believed the fire was set by a crazy man. He had no insurance. His loss amounted to $2,000.

W. B. LARGENT has been quite sick for the past two weeks.

Charter En Route. ....a charter was granted to the Pilot Point, Gainesville and Western Railway company to begin at McKinney and extend through Denton and Cooke counties to Gainesville a distance of about fifty miles. DEATHS

The little child of Mr. And Mrs. T. D. JACKSON, died last Tuesday night and was buried Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. RUSSELL, of the northern portion of Collin county, had one of his legs broken in Sherman on Thursday by a fall while under the influence of liquor.

Mrs. Ida BALL HARRISON of Greenville, is visiting her mother, Mrs. F. M. BALL, this city.

Miss Addie HARRISON, one of Greenville’s charming young ladies, is in the city, a guest of the Messrs. BALL.

The prisoners confined in jail made a bold attempt to obtain liberty on Wednesday evening. Mr. Robert DAVIS went into the jail for some purpose when he was seized by four of them..... He gave the alarm and while he was being dragged along the corridor, threw the keys out of the window. .....a crowd had collected at the call of Mrs. Beck, and the prisoners finding their plans frustrated crowded back in their cells.

Maj. John A. BUCK was thrown from his horse one day this week, and had his collar bone broken.

I. POPPER, Esq. A whole souled good fellow and a wholesale grocer from Greenville, was in the city yesterday, and bought two car-loads of flour from Capt. RHEA to be shipped to him at Greenville. So it is small towns trade with larger ones always.

CHURCH NEWS

Rev. H. R. RAYMOND has been granted a leave of absence by his congregation, and has taken a trip to the western portion of the state in the hope of improving his health.

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES and NOTICES

April 19. This morning about 1 o’clock a fire broke out in C. L. MARTIN’s store on East California street, just west of the Episcopal church. The flames spread rapidly ....The whole row [of buildings] including D. C. HEDRICK’s grocery store and Harry HEYMAN’s residence, was burned. The grocery store building was owned by Alderman H. E. SCOIPPMEYER. While the fire was raging burglars broke into TUNGATE’s saloon, opened the safe and got $48.

On Sunday last, Sheriff BECK arrested on a telegram from Denton, J. A. BALL the Constabel of the place and Mrs PRYOR, who came into the city during the day. It was supposed to be an elopement, and BALL was arrested as a defaulter. Mrs. PRYOR returned to her husband and children.

Judge Aldridge, of Dallas, will preside in the habeas corpus trial of Tom HOWELL at this place to-day.

Gov. THROCKMORTON has been in town nearly every day this week. He is looking better than for a year past, and will return to Washington City next week.

The Monarch Saloon. The undersigned having assumed control of the above well-known resort has renovated the same throughout, and invites the public to call in and refresh themselves. A. L. COLE.

W. T. Beverly announces this week for County Attorney.

A military company, under Capt. T. F. MANGUM, was organized in this city last Monday night and thirty-six young men enrolled their names. The Broom Brigade gave an entertainment at Plano on Thursday evening. ....Clara HOUGHTON [appeared].

Mrs. Simpson of Terrell, is visiting the family of J. H. DOMAN, of this city.

J. W. LARGENT was thrown from his buggy on Thursday evening, sustaining a fracture of the left arm, near the wrist.


DEATHS

Died. On Sunday, April 18th John w. BERRY for many years past a citizen of Collin county, was gathered to his fathers by the reaper. He was 82 years of age, more than half of his life being spent in Texas, coming first with Austin’s colony, he remained some time, when he returned to Missouri. He soon returned to Texas, setttling on the Brazos, and afterwards removing to North Texas.

The County Convention. The county convention met last Monday with a pretty full representtion. Jas. H. JENKINS was elected temporary Chairman, and Dr. W. D. LAIR permanent Chairman, and K. R. CRAIG, Secretary. The convention was addressed by Judge HARE and Co. PICKETT. Delegates to Galveston were appointed and instructed for ROSS, OGLESBYand Judge MALTBIE, for the Supreme Court, and recommended CLINT for Attorney General. Pilot Point. Aug. 2. The little four-year-old daughter, Mary, of Mr. And Mrs. T. S. JOHNSON came near being gored to death by a cow Saturday evening. The animal threw her to the ground but the timely arrival of Mrs. JOHNSON, who seized the club and drove the cow from the furious attack, saved the child’s life. She sustained several bruises but not dangerous.

The first bale of the new cotton was brought into McKinney by Mr. G. J. COURTNEY of the southwestern portion of the county. It was shipped by Messrs. WEBB and HYNES.

The many friends of Maj. E. F. BROWN, will regret to lose himself and family from our midst. He will make his home in the future at Sherman.

John FOX, of Denton county, was in the city this week renewing old acquaintances. It is about time for him to come home as he has been ruralizing about long enough.

Capt. CRAIGHEAD, of the Plano Review, was in the city on Thursday and honored the Enquirer office with a call.

Last Wednesday there were three bales of cotton in town, each aiming to secure the prize for the first of the season. Mr. COURTNEY brought his in about 10 o’clock a.m.; Mr. J. A. BIRDWELL arriving with his about 3 p.m.; and another gentleman whose name we did not learn. The Bar of McKinney met at the court house on Saturday last and passed resolutions of regret at the removal of E. F. BROWN, Esq., from our city.

R. M. BOARD left for New York last Tuesday, where he goes to purchase his fall stock, and will inform the public that he will sell as low as any house in North Texas.

Letter from Anna. Anna is still on a boom. Mr. E. MILLIGAN has erected a two-story residence. There is to be a new store opened here; the Anna Mill Company has commenced operations.

Mr. R. F. EASTEN, who has a farm two miles south of Denison, on Iron Ore, killed a boss snake on his place a day or so ago. Mr. EASTEN and Col. Jack PARKER, while passing through the corn-field heard a singular noise. PARKER exclaimed to EASTEN, “there is a rattlesnake near at hand.” In a moment the snake was discovered in a coil in an old stump. It was killed with a stick. It was a diamond rattlesnake which measured seven feet and was twenty-two inches around the body with five rattles and one button. According to natural history, the snake was sixteen years of age.

Parson H. T. DAVIS, who was confined in jail for some weeks charged with fighting, and tried and released this term, was arrested this week under charge of robbing C. C. DEWEY of Plano while a guest at the City Hotel.


DEATHS

Mattie Morton, daughter of Ormaby and Emma SCOTT, died on the morning of July 28th in the sixth year of her age.

Gov. THROCKMORTON returned home on Sunday last, from Washington, since which time he has been confined to his home except one or two days.

Our old friend Hogan WITT, was in one day this week and gave us a call. Forty years ago he followed the stars and stripes through Mexico and says he can go again if necessary to uphold the honor of the old flag.

All ex-Federal soldiers are requested to call on Louis GOEMAN for information that may be gratifying to them.

Cotton ginning is beginning in various portions of the county. Mr. J. M. BRYAN, of Weston was in town Thursday for fixtures for his gin.


DEATHS

Dragged to Death. Sam LITTRELL living in the northern portion of the county was entangled in a lariat last Wednesday by which he was leading a mule, and the animal becoming frightened ran, and dragged him in such a manner as to cause his almost instant death. LITTRELL was esteemed a good citizen.

Jesse James, the three year old son of Mr. William JAMES, who resides in the north part of town [Denison] came near dying with strangulation yesterday. He procured a stout cord and tied one end around his neck. The other end was thrown over a door and fastened securely. The youth then stepped off a small box. When discovered, he was black in the face and gasping for breath. A moment more and little Jesse would have been an angel.

Strayed or Stolen. About April 3rd, one sorrel 2 year old filley, about 14 hands high, white streak down her face. Will pay liberally for information leading to her recovery. Address Wm. GALLAHAR, McKinney, Texas.

Richard FLOOD has disposed of his interest in the Winsboro Sentinel to his partner, Mr. P. G. PENN. Mr. FLOOD will devote his whole time and energies to the Farmersville Times.

Willis DOWELL, raised in Collin, but now of Tom Green county, is back home, shaking hands with his old time friends.

J. Lee FAIRES has sold his farm to Ed NEWSOME, and will removed to Grayson County, between Sherman and Denison.

The old bay horse of A. J. KRAUSE took a run down the street north of town on Tuesday last. A youth was in the wagon and held him in the street till he was able to control him.

Two Horse Thieves from Collin County Captured. Gainesville. Constable Pat Ware took charge of three young men who had been on the square and traded a horse. They were sounded by George RICE, who finally made a trade with them, and divulged very strong evidence of their guilt. Their names are Perry D----Y, Bill HENSLEY, and Albert ROGERS. The latter faltered and gave the others away. The horse was stolen from a Mr. CARUTH, in Collin County.

GENERAL ARTICLES AND NOTICES

At Sherman on Tursday [sic] last, Nelson POWELL was placed on preliminary examination for arson at Van Alstyne, and to the astonishment of even the prosecution a negro Campbellite preacher by the name of BECKWITH, when placed on the stand confessed that he and Nelson POWELL, Joe McKINNEY, and Harris Mcney [sic], all preachers, had concocted the scheme and burned the house. The evidence sent witness and all to jail.

Monroe HARRIS, a popular young gentlemen of this place has gone to Dallas to take a position in a large dry goods establishment in that city.

Mr. BRADLEY retires from the editorial chair of the Mercury and is succeeded by the Messrs. RUDOLPH.

Captain R. M. BOARD returned from the East this week, and has placed us under obligations for files of late Eastern papers.

H. A. FINCH, Esq. Is off on a trip to “old Mississippi,” and will be absent several weeks. We wish him a pleasant sojourn at his old home.

Reward - Money Lost. On the afternoon of the 21st, inst. Between McKinney and Melissa, probably at the depot at one of the places, Mrs. E. S. DEWEY lost her pocket book, containing $310.00 in currency. A liberal reward will be paid for the return of the property to T. M. SCOTT, Melissa, Texas, or Walter b. HARRISON, McKinney, or for information leading to its recovery.

John WEBB who purchased the F. H. TAYLOR property in Short’s addition is making some handsome additions to the place. He has converted the house into a very handsome cottage.

Mr. E. D. McCOY tells us that by going down into the bed of Wilson creek and digging a few feet he secured an abundance of water for his stock.

The democratic convention at Celina on Tuesday last nominated Maj. W. A. KENDALL, of Denton county for the Senate and Capt. J. D. NAYLOR of Collin, for Floater. Both are good men, and in every way, worthy of the confidence placed in them by the democracy.

Ben THROCKMORTON, who has been in Houston for some time, returned home this week. He will leave in a few days to attend lectures at Louisville, Ky.

Willis DOWELL has recently purchased a beautiful building site in SHORT’s addition, and will, we presume, shortly erect a home upon it.

Gov. THROCKMORTON has been sick at home this week. He expects to start for the Indian Territory in a few days where he will spend the remainder of the summer.

Our old time friend, and fellow citizen, L. J. GRAVES, has been very sick at his home a few miles west of the city [McKinney] for several weeks. We hope he may soon fully recover.

Harry SMITH, at SMITH and JOHNSON’s drug store, has a thermometer which tries to throw the mercury out at the top of the tube; and it is believed by some to be the sole cause of the extremely hot weather. If it is not the thermometer then we do not know what can cause it.

A Vindication. Lebanon, Tex. Having learned with deep mortification that certain parties in Collin county are endeavoring to cast reflection on the character of E. W. H. SHELBURNE by circulating ...that...he stole a mule from me, I desire to be heard..... I make this statement which is ten thousand times more lenient than I feel.... Any person who has circulated said charge... has done so upon incorrect information, or else he is an infamous liar and a green-eyed, black hearted slanderer. [Signed] B. S. SHELBURNE.

To the Public. McKinney. .... H. C. MACK, in one of his loud sounding harangues, charged me with staying all night with a negro family near Farmersvill, for whom I was surveying.... This I denounce as an infamous lie. I saw MACK to-day about the matter and he gives Capt. J. G. DAVIE as his authority. .... I can prove by Mr. T. M. VERNON and Mr. W. C. ROBINSON, the gentlemen with whom I remained all night that the charge is in every respect false. Respectfully, M. H. BYRNE.

SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. J. M. RICHARD’s Primary school will open on Monday, Sept. 6th, 1886. Boys over six years of age will not be received. Therm, $2 per scholastic month.


CHURCH NEWS

The Kermiss, given by the ladies of the C. P. Church, last Wednesday, at Mrs. Ben RHINE’s was a very pleasant affair. Though the attendance was not very large the receipts were quite liberal.

DEATHS

Maj. CRUNK of Paint Rock, was drowned in the Concho river on the 23rd inst. While crossing the stream his horse stumbled and he fell off, sinking beneath the angry current.

Homicide. The vicinity of Blue Ridge was the scene of a killing on Thursday evening. Joseph AKRIDGE, and a nephew named Ves JOHNSON have been on unfriendly terms for some time past. JOHNSON is a renter on the farm of AKRIDGE. AKRIDGE was shot from some bushes while riding along a farm road near his home. At the first shot his horse was killed, the second taking effect in AKRIDGE’s neck and head. After AKRIDGE had fallen JOHNSON fired two more shots into his prostrate body. ....some weeks before..JOHNSON had shot at AKRIDGE. JOHNSON surrendered to officers and claims that AKRIDGE drew or attempted to draw a pistol on him, though when found the dead hand still clasped the riding switch. JOHNSON lately came from McClennan county. AKRIDGE was a well known citizen of the county [Collin].

The tanks throughout the county have about all failed, and many stock owners are put to their utmost exertions to procure water for stock. We have talked to one, Capt. M. S. WINN, who has driven his stock to distant parts to find water.

....a number of the youth of McKinney left this week for distant parts to attend school. Among those who leave are Misses Bessie ARDINGER and Mary DeARMOND, who go to Missouri and Kentucky, and Masters Eugene ARDINGER, Ben and Willie HILL, who go to the Bingham school, Bingham, N. C.

Henry WILEY, son of Dr. WILEY of this city, returned home on Saturday last to spend his vacation. He is a naval cadet, and has been at Annapolis, the Naval School, for two years.

CHURCH NEWS

The Woman’s Missionary Society of the Methodist Church, of McKinney, will hold their anniversary at the Presbyterian Church, Saturday, at 8 p.m.. All are invited to attend.


DEATHS

An Old Citizen Gone. L. J. GRAVES, for many years past a good citizen of Collin county, died at his home a few miles west of McKinney, on Wednesday last. He leaves a wife and grown up family and many friends to mourn his loss.

J. P. NEWSOM, who has been sick for some months past, died at the residence of his father-in-law, C. H. HAGGARD, last Saturday. He had been in bad health for a year or two, and this summer was prostrated by fever for several weeks.

We regret to hear that our fellow citizen, Thomas E. GRISHAM, of the Verona neighborhood, is lying very low from an attack of paralysis and not expected to recover.

Col. W. M. WEAVER, of Plano, was in the city on Monday and dropped in...He reports water very scarce in his neighborhood.

Dr. WILEY is preparing to erect a nice cottage on the south end of his home lot.

We regret to learn of a serious cutting affray at Celina on last Monday night, between two young men named CAMPBELL and CARUTH, in which the latter was severely stabbed in the back. Dr. KIRKPATRICK extracted the broken blade of a knife from the back of young CARUTH, and he is reported as getting along well. Both young were aged about eighteen years.

Squire LEWIS says: For heaven’s sake let us put honest men in office, let them hail from McKinney, Farmersville or elsewhere in Collin county. There is no room for sectional issues in our county affairs.

Frank WILCOX is off for Austin to attend the law school at the State University.

Miss Bell McCARTY, of Kentucky, is visiting her uncle Dr. John McCARTY and brother Mr. W. C. McCARTY, of this city [McKinney].

CHURCH NEWS

The ladies of the Methodist Church will give an oyster supper at Dr. GULLETT’s vacant house, Thursday night. These people are making an improvement on their church which will be an honor to the town, and the public should encourage them.


DEATHS

Mysterious Killing. On last Saturday night about midnight the sharp report of a pistol was heard, and soon after the lifeless body of a young negro, named Morgan HAMPTON, was found. [name unreadable] was charged with the shooting. On Wednesday and Thursday the examining trial was held before Esquire GRAY.

Mrs. Annie E. BARNES, wife of Wm. G. BARNES, of this city [McKinney], died on Saturday last, and was buried the following day at Rowlett creek church. She leaves a sorrowing husband and several children to mourn her untimely loss.

Gainesville. A youth by the name of Steve ELLIOTT, who lives in the northestern part of the county, while sleeping was bitten by ..... a mad cat. The boy was brought... to W. L. FLETCHER’s house where a mad stone was applied. The stone adhered two times. The neighborhood in which ELLIOTT lives is at present infested with mad dogs, and for that reason it is believed the biting was done by a mad cat.

Capt. W. H. TAYLOR sent off 2,000 pounds of flour for the sufferers in the west this week, in addition to other suplies [sic].

Gov. THROCKMORTON, Dr. FOOTE and their families left on Thursday last for Dalby Springs, Bowie county where they will remain a couple of weeks.

Capt. John B. MARTIN, of Plano, an old fashioned democrat, whalebone warp and grape-vine filling, was in the city this week.

Al WARDEN killed a fine buck, weighing 135 pounds, after cleaning this week.

On Thursday night of next week, the Collin Guards will give a grand ball at SHAIN’s Opera House....Messrs. Clint STIFF and Robt. BRISTOL are to be floor managers for the occasion.

Mr. M. L. MORRIS, an old citizen of this county, but now of Dallas, was in to see us this week. We are pained to learn that his wife died last week from cancer with which she had been afflicted for a long time. Mr. MORRIS expects to move back to his old home in a short time. He came to Collin in 1850 and cannot give up his love for his old home.

Miss Mary KENNEDY, together with her mother, and sister-in-law, of Weston were in the city on last Tuesday.

Jas R. GOUGH, the popular young candidate for justice the peace, for this precinct, has just recovered from an attack of dengue fever.

At Blue Ridge last week, a man named WILLIAMS was fined one cent and costs by a justice. He tendered the justice a nickle [sic] in payment and mounting his horse took hasty leave with the officers in pursuit of the trimmings. He was not apprehended at last accounts.

Last Saturday, Mrs. J. B. WILLIAMS brought a bale of cotton to town raised by herself. Capt. W. H. WEBB offered a raise on it of one cent per pound more than any one else would give. She sold to him and went home happy.

Parson GIBSON is announced as a candidate for county attorney.
