Dastardly Incendiarism Freedmans School house Burned.
It is with feelings of sincere regret that we record the destruction, by incendiaries, of the freedmens school house, which was situated about one mile to the west of this place, and which, some few weeks since, we took occasion to mention in our columns. The house was a log building, which some of the poor blacks of the vicinity had purchased and paid for out of the hard earnings of their honest toil, and had taken down and hauled a distance of four or five miles, and re-erected on its late site. It was located a half mile from the public road, on a spot chosen for its seclusion, in the hope that the unpretending structure would never offend the eye or ear of any who might feel unfriendly to their race or to its mental and moral improvement. The burning took place last Tuesday night, about midnight, and was the work of an armed party of unknown persons. Whether the incendiaries wore disguises or not we are unable to say, but we learn from a gentleman who was near the scene of the fire, and who formed his opinion from the shooting and other noisy demonstrations made, that quite a number of individuals must have participated in the disgraceful affair. We earnestly call upon the good citizens of this place and vicinity to lend their united efforts to the task of ferreting out and bring to punishment the authors o this wicked and most unprovoked outrage. If this and other outrages of recent occurrences, are to go unrebuked, and their perpetrators unwhipped of justice, the presence of an armed soldiery will speedily become necessary to protect peaceable, law abiding citizens in their lives and property, and to drive from the country the incendiaries, thieves, and assassins that infest it.

A Card from Sheriff Bush.
To the people of Collin county: Having been elected Sheriff of your county, it becomes my duty to make arrests of all violators of the law, and to see to the preservation of the public peace. The enforcement of the law is at all times important, but if more important at one time than another, now is the important time. I am determined to discharge my duties faithfully, fearlessly, and impartially. As Sheriff I know neither politics nor color, friend nor foe, but will do my duty for and against all alike. To be successful, I must have the cooperation of the law abiding citizens and I call upon all without distinction, to aid me to accomplish the common good in the suppression of crime. Information is often of the most important service, and when given to me by any person who may for any reason desire that he be not known, I shall always refrain from divulging his connection with it. I have had occasion within a few days past to call upon some of you to aid in investigating an affair that created suspicion and found a prompt response. Indeed I have had no occasion to complain. I have assurances of aid from the very best men of the county, and I make this appeal to you in the full belief that you will give me your hearty cooperation. W. N. BUSH.

To The Public.
I propose to raise by subscription, a small sum for the purpose of enabling the blacks of this vicinity to rebuild their school house. All persons who wish to contribute, are requested to call upon me at my office. Jas. W. THOMAS.

LOCAL.

It gives us great pleasure to say that our newly elected sheriff, Mr. W. N. BUSH, is displaying commendable zeal and industry in discharging the duties of his office, duties at all times arduous but especially so at the present juncture. Mr. BUSH is not of our political faith [Republican], but we are not afraid to do him justice.

A report brought to town last Wednesday morning to the effect that a man had been beaten to death with clubs, in East Fork bottom, created for a time no little excitement among our citizens....after a long search for the body and a careful examination of all the sign visible, consisting of hair, blood, and confused footprints, the conclusion was reached that some person or persons unknown had killed a hog in the bottom and dragged it to the highlands. The excitement has subsided.

Our fellow townsman, Judge GRAY, returned from Austin by way of Jefferson, a few days since.

Assignees Notice.

Praiseworthy. It gives us very great pleasure to record the fact that citizens of this place, irrespective of party, have contributed a sum sufficient to enable the freedmen of this vicinity to build another school house in lieu of the one destroyed by incendiaries a few weeks since. Such conduct is worthy of all praise, and we commend it to the imitation of citizens generally. If all our people would consent to banish prejudice, and for the future be governed by what from their better natures they know to be right, the effect would be as magical as the pouring of oil on troubled waters. The bitterness engendered by the past would disappear like mist before the rising sun, and we should quickly have reestablished those kindly relations, and that mutual confidence and forbearance, which should ever characterize the citizens of our common country. Try it, all ye people and witness for yourselves the wonderful results.

Pluck. Since the fire, Mr. HUBBARD, the energetic teacher of the freedmens school near town, has been meeting his pupils under a large shade tree in the vicinity of the place where the school house stood, and where the blacks purpose erecting a new one soon. Such pluck is commendable, and is almost sure to win in the end. We hope the teacher will continue to persevere, and that his school will prove a success, and a great benefit to the colored people of the neighborhood.

MARRIED. On the 6th inst. By Rev. J. C. BUMPASS at the residence of the brides father, Alexander SHIELDS and Elizabeth WOLF, all of this county.
