McKinney Public Free School. The next session will open on Monday, the 2d day of September, 1872. Pupils should be present on day of opening. W. P. CLOYD, Principal.
Our friends, ASTON and HELMS, of the Police court, A. WALTHERSDORFF of New Orleans, and a Mr. GRAY, were robbed of their loose change and parts of their clothing last Tuesday night by some light-fingered chap, who entered their sleeping apartments at the McKinney Hotel and helped himself while they slept. The thief got a pair of pants, a couple of hats, a pair of boots and about fifteen or twenty dollars in money. Such things do not often occur here.
Some one or two persons whose names we have not learned, under the influence of bad whisky, entered the house of freedman Isom MALLORY, one night this week, and after frightening the family away, one of the party made an attack on Isom with a knife. The latter escaped without injury and went to a deputy sheriff for assistance. One of the parties was subsequently arrested and gave his horse in pledge for his appearance the next morning, but afterwards went to the stable got his horse and departed. Such conduct is exceedingly reprehensible and the guilty parties ought to be punished.

We understand that the city election, which came off this week, resulted in the choice of T. T. EMERSON, the present incumbent, for Mayor, and the election of the old board with R. Diamond in the place of Ervin BROWN, who was not a candidate. Mr. Geo. O'BRIEN was chosen Marshal by a majority of three votes over R. I. WATSON.

LOCAL JOTTINGS:
We are requested to announce that Dr. B. F. HALL will preach in the Christian Church tomorrow forenoon, at the usual hour and at night, at early candle-lighting.
The public school at this place conducted by Professor LOONEY and Mrs. W. P. CLOYD, will recommence next Monday. It has been suspended temporarily on account of the small pox.
A town lot 23 by 100, east of the public square was this week sold by T. C. GOODNER, Esq., to a Mr. ALBURY, from Dover, Mo., for five hundred dollars. Mr. ALBURY is about to erect a large two-story store house on the lot.
Last Thursday, the infant son of Mr. M. A. SPURGIN, who lives a short distance west of town, died of smallpox in the second week of its life. It survived the mother, whose death was chronicled in last.......[unreadable] we deeply sympathize with Mr. SPURGIN in his double bereavement.
A letter to Sheriff BUSH from the sheriff of Johnson county, bringing information of the capture of a man who represents himself as T. H. SANDERS. SANDERS, it will be remembered, was convicted of the murder of HUFFINES, before the district court of this county, some months since, and is one of the five persons who broke jail at this place on the night of the 3rd ult.
Last week, in enumerating the cases of varioloid which occurred here during the late small pox visitation, through misinformation we classed with them the case of the little daughter of Mrs. BARTLETT, of the Central Hotel. We now learn that she had never been vaccinated, and that hers was a case of small pox in a very virulent form. This correction is due the attending physician, Dr. McCARTY, to whose experience and skill the little girl is believed to be largely indebted for the preservation of her life.
Our old friend, E. L. HUFFMAN is in the dry goods business at Lebanon, in this county, and receives country produce in exchange for goods.
DISSOLUTION:
By mutual consent, the firm known as P. R. WALLIS & Son is dissolved. The mill now running 8 miles S. E. of McKinney is offered for sale.

We understand that a boy whose name we have not ascertained, was killed by lightning at or near HILL's Store, beyond Lebanon, in this county, during the storm last Saturday; also that a traveller from Arkansas, a Mr. GARRETT, was killed in the same manner, at the house of Mr. J. W. KIRBY, six or seven miles from town. All the inmates of the house except Mr. KIRBY, were, our informant tells us, felled by the violence of the shock.
Yesterday (Wednesday) we had the pleasure of forming the acquaintance of a venerable old gentleman - a Mr. George HERNDON, of Cooper county, Missouri, who came to this county about a week since on a visit to two of his sone, the Messrs, George and James HERNDON, of this vicinity. The old gentleman has been a resident of Missouri for more than forty years, having settled in that State in the year 1831. He was born in Spotsylvania county, Virginia, in the year 1779, (three years after the declaration of American Independence) and consequently is now in the ninety-fifth year of his age. His hearing is a little impaired, but his general health and bodily and mental vigor, seem to be remarkably good for one so aged. His descendants, we are told, number about three hundred. He left town on the up-train on the Central, an hour after our interview with him, for his home in Missouri.

The Sherman Patriot says that on the 22nd one Milfred ADCOCK slipped and fell a depth of fifty feet into a well, which he was blasting, and was instantly killed.
Ex-Governor THROCKMORTON will not suffer his name used as a candidate for governor at the approaching election.
A couple of mule colts and a filly, the property of Mr. George HERNDON of this county were struck and killed by lightning, a few nights since.

OF GENEALOGICAL INTEREST: An Act to Provide for the Registration of Births.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the legislature of the state of Texas, That it shall hereafter be the duty of the clerks of the district courts of this state to make and keep in their offices a register of all persons born in their respective counties.
Sec. 2. Be it further enacted, That in order to enable the several clerks to perform the duty prescribed in the first secion [sic] of this act, it is hereby made the duty of the several county or police courts of this state to furnish the clerks with well bound books, with appropriate headings and properly ruled into columns; that said books shall be so ruled as to have one column for the name of the person to be registered, one column for the name of the father and mother, one column for date of births, one column for the color of the parents, and one for the sex.
Sec. 3. Be it further enacted, That it shall be the duty of the father and mother to have the registry of all children born unto them after the passage of this act, registered, as provided for in the second section of this act, within six months after such birth; and any father or mother, guardian or person having charge of such child, neglecting the performance of the duty prescribed in this act shall be fined in the sum of five dollars for every month said duty may be neglected.
Sec. 4. Be it further enacted, That the several clerks of this state shall keep a complete index of the persons as registered, and may demand and receive from the person having such registration done the sum of ten (10) cents for each person so registered. That this act take effect from its passage. Approved May 3, 1873.

Thomas M. RODMAN, formerly of Wise, but for some years past a citizen of this county, died at his residence in this place last Sunday evening, after a lingering illness o nearly six weeks duration. He was a useful citizen and an honest man.
The announcement of Mr. D. D. GRAHAM, of Farmersville, for District Clerk, will be found in the appropriate column this week. Of Mr. GRAHAM....we are told by one who knows, that he is altogether capable and possesses considerable popularity in the Farmersville neighborhood, where he has long resided.
Mr. James M. ENLOE, of precinct number three has announced for Justice of the Peace. Mr. ENLOE is the present incumbent, and we think all who know him will do him the justice to say that he has endeavored honestly and faithfully to discharge the duties of the office. He is a worthy man.
BLACKMORE, brother to the one hung at Sherman in '69 for the murder of WILSON in the south part of this county, was recently sentenced to the penitentiary for ten years from Red River county, for stealing horses, in company with others, from a man named VANDYKE.
