TRIBUTE OF RESPECT:

At a called meeting of Farmersville Lodge No. 214 A. F. M. LOCAL AND SPECIAL:

We learn that the first bale of new cotton taken to Galveston this season brought eighteen cents per pound. It was grown by Mr. Pike ALLEN on the ORENDUFF farm, a few miles north of town.

We are much pleased to learn that our city fathers have entered into a contract with W. R. SHORT of this place for the digging of a couple of large cisterns.

A man by the name of SPOTTSWOOD, charged with murder, and for whose arrest, the Governor of Missouri had offered a reward, was arrested in this place yesterday, by Sheriff BUSH and U. S. deputy marshal, SMITH. We understand SPOTTSWOOD acknowledged that he killed two men in the State of Missouri, some years since, but claimed that he acted in self-defence.

A man named PATTERSON, traveling from Denison eastward, died very suddenly at Honey Grove last Thursday. He drove up to Mrs. SMITH's hotel and asked to rest for a few minutes, and lying down on a bed, died in a very short time. He was in the last stage of consumption.

James HARMAN's photograph gallery is in a one story building on Tennessee street south of the public square.

Lieut. STARR, U.S.A., who has been in this vicinity with a squad of troops for some days past for the purpose of buying horses, was, on Tuesday evening last, assaulted by one HATCHER, while in a restaurant on the east side of the public square. [He] was unarmed but defended himself with a loaded whip, with which he knocked his assailant down two or three times. HATCHER was promptly arrested by the civil authorities and lodged in jail. We understand that next Friday has been set or investigation of the case.

The Pilot Point Democrat has changed hands. Mr. W. M. McCONNELL has purchased the interests of Messrs. BENNETT & TRASK. Major Van B. BENNETT is still retained as joint editor with Mr. McCONNELL.

Mr. Jacob BALDWIN, living ten miles east of [Bonham], was taken with a spasm, while standing near the fire, after all the family had retired a few nights ago, and fell into the flames. When discovered he was seriously, if not fatally burned.
