Ralph Smith has written three volumes on the Morelands of Southern Maryland. I highly recommend his books on this subject. He has given me permission to put the table of contents of all three volumes on this website.
Ralph David Smith passed away August 24, 2012 at his home in Florida. He was a great researcher and will be missed by all of us with roots in Maryland.

Levin Moreland, and wife Mary Waters, dau. of Thomas Waters and Elizabeth ______ [Gibbons?]
A newly discovered book, "Woman of Faith: The Story of Mary Moreland Kitchings," by Esther M. Leithold, has cleared up the confusion between the names Levin Moreland and Levin Walter Moreland. The book discusses the Moreland family on pages 33-54, and, the information there, plus the Levin Moreland records in Moreland, Vols. 1-3, make it clear that Levin Moreland and Levin Walter Moreland were NOT the same person; they were father and son.
The 1820 St. Mary's Co., Md. Census of Levin Moreland shows that he had 4 sons. Prior to the discovery of the Leithold book, only 3 of the sons were known: William T. Moreland, George W. Moreland and Joseph S. Moreland. The Leithold book establishes that the 4th son of Levin Moreland and Mary Waters was:
--Levin Walter Moreland, d. Apr. 5, 1845 in Ark., m. Mar. 4, 1844 in Ark. to Mary James Prideaux, b. ca. Mar. 1826. Levin Walter Moreland and Mary Prideaux had one child, a son William Thomas Walter Moreland (the Thomas was later dropped from his name), b. Apr. 14, 1845 in Ark.
After Levin Walter Moreland died, his widow Mary married 3 more times, her last husband being Daniel Kitchings. The title character named in the Leithold book, "Mary Moreland Kitchings," refers to her.
Of particular interest in the Leithold book, at pp. 52-54, is a copy of the long letter, dated July 4, 1845 at Baltimore, that Joseph S. Moreland wrote to Mary after she had informed him of the death of her husband Levin Walter Moreland (Joseph's brother.) Joseph tells Mary that he has written to his brother George W. Moreland and his sister Mary Elizabeth Moreland to inform them of their brother's death.
The above information shows that we have 2 records of son Levin Walter Moreland in Moreland, Vols. 1-3:
--the June 1818 District of Columbia will of Thomas Waters that leaves property to grandson Levin Walter Moreland (see Moreland, Vol. 1, pp. 117-118);
--the Feb. 1836 sale by Levin Walter Moreland of the Charles Co., Md. land he inherited from grandfather Thomas Waters to George Waters (see Moreland, Vol. 1, p. 119).
Levin Walter Moreland was a Methodist pastor and teacher during his years in Arkansas. There was litigation over the estate of his father Levin Moreland which dragged on and depleted the estate. It was finally settled in 1849 and a slave Jane and her young son were sent to Clarksville, Ark. as the share of Levin W. and Mary's son William, Levin W. himself being already deceased.
