Morelands in North Carolina

Founded 1653

In 1584 Sir Walter Raleigh sent Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe in two ships to discover new lands. When they returned to England after exploring the coast of North Carolina, which they called Virginia in honor of Queen Elizabeth, they took two Indians and many products of the country. In 1585 a second voyage was made to Virginia [North Carolina] by Sir Richard Grenville for Sir Walter Raliegh.

In 1586 Sir Walter Raleigh sent a third expedition to Virginia for the relief of the colonists left there on the last voyage. But on reaching Virginia, it was found that they had departed. In 1587 Sir Walter Raleigh sent 3 ships under John White, whom he appointed governor, with 150 persons to settle in Virginia, arriving at Roanoke Island. It wasn't until 1607 that the first permanent English settlement in the New World was made, that being Jamestown, Virginia.

In 1663 Charles II granted to eight lords proprietors the charter for Carolina, even though people had already permanently settled in the Albemarle section of what is now North Carolina. Explorations and Attempted Settlements of Carolina by David Leroy Corbitt. LDS 908689.

That his said brother was formerly an inhabitant of Dinwiddie County living in the neighborhood of Doct. That his brother moved away from this county about eight or nine years ago to the best of his remembrance, ever since which he has resided in No Carolina as he believes. That this Deponent knows of no other Moreland of his brother's name. That, if now alive he is about sixty years of age, looks well and was pretty fat when this deponent last saw him.
