THOMAS BAKER OF EAST HAMPTON: Second Generation

3. Thomas2 BAKER (Thomas1) was born in East Hampton, Long Island, New York July 26, 1654.(12) Thomas died September 8, 1735 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York at 81 years of age.(13) He was interred September 1735 at the South End Burial Ground, in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York.(14)

He married twice. He married Ann TOPPING April 24, 1686 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York. He married Elizabeth WESTOVER May 1, 1695 in Connecticut. Elizabeth was born May 3, 1670 in Killingworth, New Haven County, Connecticut. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonas WESTOVER and Hannah GRISWOLD. Elizabeth died July 18, 1753 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York at 83 years of age. She was interred July 1753 at the South End Burial Ground, in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York.(15) There is considerable disagreement regarding the marriages of this Thomas Baker as presented on page 206 of Jeanette Edwards Rattray's, "East Hampton History", (Garden City, NY: Country Life Press, 1953). Records appear to substantiate his marriage, in Southampton, to Ann Topping on April 24, 1686. The argument (The American Genealogist, April 1933, p. 201-204) for Elizabeth Westover being the wife who survived him seems relatively convincing and the best of those presented. The makeup of his family, based upon church records, leads me to believe that it is very probable that Ann Topping died young and that Elizabeth was the mother of most of his children. Neither of the two other possible marriages mentioned in "EAST HAMPTON HISTORY" seems likely. Subsequent to the death of his father in 1700, this Thomas Baker would have no longer been referred to as "Thomas Baker, junior". His eldest son Thomas would have, by convention, become Thomas, Jr., and was the individual who married Elizabeth Osborn on 6 December 1711. The suggestion that he was the Baker who married Elizabeth (Edwards) Stratton, widow of Richard, is highly improbable. Elizabeth (Edwards) Stratton died, again a widow, approximately thirty years before this Thomas Baker and was a generation older than he. Whoever the Baker that she married was, it was likely that he was not living in East Hampton at the time of their marriage. Thomas Baker's will, dated 11 February 1721 and proved 4 December 1735, names his wife Elizabeth; daughter Mercy, under 18; and sons, Daniel, Micah, Samuel, Jeremiah, and John. He leaves his son Nathaniel the bulk of his estate and names him executor.
