He grad. with honors from U. of NC in 1855; served the Confederacy during the Civil War, being commissioned as a Chaplain of the 53rd Regt., NC troops. After the battle of Gettysburg, by permission of Federal Officers, he remained behind with the wounded within the Union lines for 3 months. He was exchanged and rejoined his Regiment and stayed with them until the close of the Civil War.
For 4 years he was a Prof. of Latin and Mathematics at Fayetteville Female High School in Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC and was liscensed to preach by the Fayetteville Presbury on 17 Apr 1861 at Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC. In 1870 he went as a missionary to the Choctaw Indian Nation, OK; returning to NC in 1877 in poor health. During the next 3 or 4 years he served as a Minister in the states of NC, SC and GA. In Apr 1892 he leased the Alexander College in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY and remained there until his death a year later.

General Notes: 1. Qt. Geo. Colton & Desc; #413 (Florence I. W. Burgess). His College course was interrupted by teaching school during 2 winters, mainly for earning money, and preached at Presbyterian & Methodist Churches. Early in 1806 he took charge of the Academy just founded in Monson, MA but remained there for only a year. Thence he went to the Academy at Leicester, MA where he was the Principal Preceptor from Oct 1807 thru Feb 1809. He then went to Wilbraham, MA to assist the Rev. Ezra Witter in the instruction of private pupils while himself receiving instruction in theology. He then went to Northampton, MA and taught 3 months at a school for young ladies and thence to Salem, MA as an attendant to John Pickering. Ordained into the ministry at Palmer, MA 19 Jun 1811. Remained there till 1821 when he took charge of Monson Academy a 2nd time and remained there 9 years. The next 3 years he taught in Amherst, MA and in 1833 moved to Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC to take charge of the Donaldson Academy. By 1840 his biggest task was finding money to build the Fayetteville & Western Railroad( investors were never convinced and the railroad was never built). In 1846 accepted Presidency of the Mississippi College in Clinton, Hinds Co., MS; resigned that position on 28 Jul 1848 and returned to NC to take charge of the Cumberland Academy at Summerville, Harnett Co., NC on Jan 1849. He became Pastor at Sardis Presbyterian Church at Linden, NC 1851-54 and lived in Asheboro, NC where he spent the remainder of his days on a farm, taught school, served as Principal of Hay Mount High School and of the Cumberland Academy and preached occassionally.

For a few years he kept a private school in Somers, CT where he fitted young men for college and abt. 1790 he settled permanently in Longmeadow, Hampden Co., MA., where he also received students, giving special attention to their theological instruction. He was a preacher, the village Lawyer (possessed a large & vauable library) and for 20 years (1793-1813) served as the Town Clerk.
He compiled a book of records from which much of the early information regarding the Longmeadow/Springfield Colton families was used in the Quartermaster George Colton book.
