A  short  story of  his  life  comes  to us from Virgil Boyd Strickland,  who was his niece. "Rudd was a born salesman and trader.  During  the  depression  years he sold "Rat Guns". I have  a  picture  of  him holding up rats he had exterminated with the guns.  Later  he  sold "chicken markers". These were markers that  tattoed  a  number on the chicken wings so that thieves stealing chickens could be caught easier. (Lots of chicken stealing from  farmers  in those days.)  He had a crew of men selling  them  along  with  him and they traveled fromstate  to  state-Michigan,  Illinois,  Indiana, and Kentucky-selling  to  farmers.  They were endorsed by the sheriffs department. The crew included, George S. Boyd, Orville Britton, Warren Strickland and others. This was at a time when no jobs were available.  As a child I remember when he was married to Ella. They used to cut  wood and  sell it.  She helped him and used  the  crosscut  saw.  He always lived in the Logansport, Peru area after they  moved  to  Indiana from Ohio.  Rudd also sold wood stoves and after the war he had an antique store in Logansport."  Rudd and Ella had two daughters:    PHOTOS

In 1929 after the stock market crash he came to Michigan.  Mary's mother lived on the old Harris farm in Brady Township, Saginaw County on Fowler road. During the depression, living on a farm, you could at least grow your own food.  In later years and prior to the time he died he worked for the  Indian Trails bus line in Owosso, Michigan.  After George died in 1946 Mary worked for a factory called Redmond's in Owosso. Redmonds built small electric motors. George and Mary had six children. The fourth child daughter Dora died from  typhoid  fever  in  1921,  at  the Larkins homestead on Ridge Road near Oakley.      (letter from Vivian Hartleroad, Mable Boyd Clark's daughter)

Dear Richard,                                                                                            21 May 1985

I'm  sorry  but mother  has not been able to write to anyone lately.  I had to read your last letter to her.

I  would  like  to  share my favorite story with you. This is about  your  grandfather,
(George S. Boyd)  which  would have been my favorite uncle.

Uncle George  was  visiting our family on the farm when I was about seven  years old. My mother had a date and was not at home.  Well,  we had  been  having  chicken  thieves come in the middle of the night and they would steal most of our chickens.  My  brother and your grandfather decided to set a trap for them.  They stayed up real late on this particular
night.  Well sure enough about eleven thirty they heard a noise down in  the  apple orchard and thinking it was chicken thieves came out of the  house with shotguns loaded and ready
to shoot them.  My poor mother yelling to the top of her lungs " it isn't chicken thieves  it is me and my friend.  But they made a believer out of him, he turned tail and ran. Uncle George
and my brother Richard would laugh years later and tell this tale to anyone who would listen.

Thanks for taking the time to write to my mother, she is getting very confused as she  grows  older, but she loves hearing from her relatives.

Sincerely
Your cousin once removed
Vivian I. Hartleroad

Mancell Lee Boyd,  son  of  George S. Boyd and Mary Catherine HARRIS,  was born 18 November 1912 in Rodessa, Louisiana.  He came to Michigan with his parents in the 1930's.  He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which was  part of president  Roosevelt's  New Deal, in 1933.  He was at Camp Grayling for a year or so.  After  the depression of the 30's was over he worked at Saginaw Products, a small factory which was to become a defense factory during the  Second World War.  He  was  employed  there  until  his  death  11 Sept 1973.  He is buried at the Ridge Road Cemetery near  Oakley,  Michigan, where  many  other  relatives  are  buried.  He  married Wava HAMMOND 10 Dec 1936 and raised eight children.   Wava is the daughter of Lester HAMMOND and Goldie HILL/BUCHOLZ  and was born on 11 Dec 1919.   She married second Theodore R.  BATES on 1 June 1981. Theodore died December 3, 1993 in Elsie, MI.

Years after my dad passed away my mother told me that my dad was always bitter about Aunt Virgil and Uncle Warren. There were no jobs during that time (depression) and Aunt Dolly and Uncle Warren would come over for weeks at a time and there was never enough food to go around. Uncle Warren didn't have a job and some of the family went hungry.  The boys had to join the CCC camp to help the family.  Most of the pay they earned in the CCC was sent home.  So Aunt Virgil, Uncle Warren and their children stayed in the home and the boys went to the CCC camps to help feed them.  I asked Aunt Helen Boyd about it and she said Uncle Richard used to talk about it too.  I think it is true! Aunt Virgil and Uncle Warren never came to my father's funeral.

A letter from Herbert R. Boyd
                      of Des Moines, Iowa
                            6 June 1985

Dear Richard,

Since  my  father  Albert  died  when I was five years old, I found I had to help if I could.  By the time I was nine years of  age I  was  selling  door to door. I also sold newspapers
downtown and at the state fair.

I  took  a  year  off  while  going through high school but I finally  graduated in  1933.  I  was  able to find a job with Western Union and with one of the large hotels in Des Moines.

By 1936 I was able to enter college and worked my way through Iowa State at Ames. I received a B.S. in both science and Agriculture  in 1940.  In 1941 I entered the graduate school at the University of  Iowa  and  then the college of Medicine. I found  that  Medicine  was too much for me to try and work my way through. As a  result  I  became very ill and it was some time before I could continue  my education. I volunteered for the service but they  would  not  take  me because of my poor physical condition.  I finally got an exemption for my health and became a quality  control engineer where I supervised and
carried out research in  the  developement of munitions.  Some of  my  research  was successful and may have been helpful in the war effort.

When  that  job ended I applied for unemployment benefits and the U.S.  Department  of  Labor asked me to take a job with them.

In  the  meantime  I started to take college credits at Drake University  where  I  received  an  M.A. in economics and administration. I moved up  to  Labor Market Economist V, which
had  a  merit  system  class,  as a public service executive.  During later years I received a M.S. in Library Science and I served  for  a  while  as a  College  Library Director. I was
working  on a  doctorate in education at Western Reserve-Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland.

I retired in 1978 as a department chief in a state government unit and as a  Cooperative Representive of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for the state of Iowa.

Your cousin
