Pages 148-176 JOSEPH HARRIS, son of George Harris and Hannah TUNIS was born 1 Dec 1770 at or near Elizabethtown, New Jersey. When a young boy his parents removed to Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Martha RYAN 25 April 1791 by whom he had seven children. Mr. Harris lived at or near Amity, Pa., and died there about 1837. NANCY HARRIS, daughter of Joseph Harris and Martha RYAN was born 4 November 1795 in Washington County, Pa. She married Moses LITTLE in 1823. They had six children. MELISSA HARRIS, daughter of Joseph Harris and Martha RYAN was born 13 October 1799 in Washington County, PA. She married Daniel McCOLLUM by whom she had sixteen children. Mrs. McCollum was still living in 1884 and as smart and active as a girl. She is now in her eighty-sixth year and gives her own history as being the mother of sixteen children, and she has fifty grandchildren and forty great- grandchildren. In her own handwriting she says she thinks she has done her share toward multiplying and replenishing the earth. Two sons and one daughter were stillborn. McCollum
d. young JOHN HARRIS, son of Joseph Harris and Martha RYAN was born 01 Dec 1802 in Washington County, PA. He was educated in the common schools of those days, but having a strong desire for education, he entered as a student and graduated at Washington College in Washington County, Pa., in 1827. After graduation he went south and taught school in South Carolina for one or two years. From there he went to Covington, Georgia where he became acquainted with, and married Susan Ann Henderson of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, 8 December 1831. They had eleven children six sons and five daughters. In Covington,
Georgia, Mr. Harris went into merchandising for a while then gave it up and bought
a
farm and a number of Negroes, and commenced raising and buying cotton, which
occupation he followed
the rest of his life. He was a man who took an active part in politics
and
in Masonry. He took a great deal of interest in institutions of learning. He shared
the first honors with
Henry R. Wise who was afterwards Governor of the State of
Virginia. He was a man of considerable consequence
in Georgia. He held many offices of trust and honor. He was Grand
Master
of the Grand Lodge of the State of Georgia for six years. He was in the Legislature
a number of times, and
at one time a President of a bank. His life was mainly
devoted
to farming and buying cotton, in which he amassed quite a fortune.
He
owned 140 slaves at one time, but almost everything he had was swept away by the
consequences of the
war.
He made himself very unpopular in the section in which he lived,
during
the war, by his firm Union principles. He was
always a Republican, and after the war was over, he was elected
Senator
to the Legislature from his district, in spite of the great opposition to him. He was
a very well informed
man, and a man of great energy and resolution, and a very fine
conversationalist. He was a large, robust man, weighing from 225 to 240 pounds. He was
afflicted with
apoplexy, and the last attack he had caused his death. He died 16 June 1878. I found John Harris
and family on the
1840 Census, Newton County with wife and two children both under five

at the old homestead near Amity, PA. She died about 1852 while on a visit to her
cousin,
Hon. Judge Caleb Baldwin, in Fairfield, Iowa. While there she was stricken
down with cholera and

NEHEMIAH HARRIS, son of Joseph Harris and Martha RYAN was born 26 July 1810 in Washington County, PA. He learned the tailoring trade, but not liking the business, he gave it up. He then farmed the old homestead after his father's death, for some years; then engaged in steamboating as owner and Captain of his vessel, and lastly, he engaged in Merchandising in the City of Wheeling, West Virginia. Mr. Harris married twice, leaving a son by his second wife. Mr Harris died about the year 1866, in the City of Wheeling. 1. David Harris

Elias married and has three or four children, names not known. Mrs.
Day died and her husband married and aunt of his first wife, Nehemiah Harris' second
wife. AMANDA McCOLLUM, daughter of Mellissa Harris and Daniel McCOLLUM was born in Washington County, PA. She married Milton CLUTTER and had five children. Milton Clutter enlisted in the United States Army and while in the army was taken with smallpox and died in the hospital at Washington, D.C. in 1862. Amanda then married Daniel CONDIT. John Harris and Susan Ann HENDERSON was born 17 Feb 1836 near
Covington,
Georgia. He married Susie E. SLACK 6 June 1860. They lived together almost three
years when she was
called away by death. She died 7 March 1863. Mr. Harris married for his
second wife, Lucy C. ANDERSON 30 November 1865. She died 26 October 1869 after
about four years of
married life. Lucy had one child that died in infancy. He married for
his third wife, Elizabeth A. GROVES 14 June 1871. Mr. Harris was
a farmer by occupation. He was also a Judge of the Infirm Court at Covington, Georgia
and a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church. They lived near Covington in 1882.
ISAAC P. HENDERSON HARRIS, son of John Harris and Susan Ann HENDERSON was born 4 November 1844 near Covington, Georgia. He married Susan EVANS of Covington in January 1866. They had four children. b. 12 Nov 1880 d. infancy WILLIAM HARRIS, twin of Susan, son of John Harris and Susan Ann HENDERSON was born 12 September 1847 near Covington, Georgia. There is quite a romance connected with the life of William Harris. Years ago, a detachment of United States soldiers on their way to fight the Indians passed through Covington, Georgia. There was a young Englishman by the name of George Daniels, who had left his home in London and came over to this country. He had joined the army and was with this detachment when they passed through Covington. Mr. Daniels being sick with a fever, they left him there to die, but the citizens nursed him back to life and then sent a petition for his release from the army. He stayed there and married in that place. He had three daughters. When his second daughter was about ten years old, William Harris, only a few months older than she, exchanged rings and called themselves engaged. The rings were lost, but not their fondness for each other. When they grew older they exchanged rings and were engaged in earnest. When Sherman's raiders first entered Covington (during the Civil War) a reckless Southerner shot two of his soldiers. This southerner was afterwards killed by the Union men as a punishment, but to further satisfy vengence they must kill another man. George Daniels, for some reason, was not in the Southern army. One morning as Mr. Daniels was going hunting he was found with the gun before he could conceal it. They would listen to no explanation, but took him out and shot him. His father, during the war, died in London. His three daughters were sent for as soon as the war was over to come to London and take charge of their property. The daughters remained in London eight years, or, until the youngest became of age. Then they returned to the United States, and in two weeks after their return to Georgia, William Harris and Virginia E. Daniels were married 08 June 1873 at Covington. They were married according to the English style, before twelve o'clock in the forenoon, and by the Episcopal service. By her he had two children, one son and one daughter. Mr. Harris was very kind hearted and a very sweet dispositioned man, kind to the poor and afflicted; his heart and hand were ever open to the wants of the needy. He said that he tried to live right and he died in peace with all men. February 1849 near Covington, Georgia. She was a very unselfish girl and
thought more of the happiness of others than
her own happiness. At the time of her mothers death she was engaged
to
be married, but she anukked the engagement and devoted her time to her younger
brothers and sisters,
until they were grown, and filled as near as she could the place of a
mother. After twelve years the engagement was renewed and she married Jacob A. HENRY 19
February 1878, by whom
she had one
child who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Henry lived in Baltimore, Maryland, where Mr.
Henry was in the
Oyster
business with William Ellis and Company. Mrs. Henry died in
Baltimore, Maryland 31 August 1882. SARAH EUDOCIA HARRIS, daughter of John Harris and Susan Ann HENDERSON was born 8 February 1853 near Covington, Georgia where she married Bliss ANDERSON in December 1872 and had three children. Georgia. He won the
respect and confidence of all his employers by his faithfulness to

She married a Mr. Hays (given name not known) in Elizabethtown. She had several
children. Her oldest
son
Jabez Wheeler Hays married but have no account of him leaving any
children
except one son whose name was Henry Hays. He was a jeweler and and lived in New
York City but in 1884
was in Newark, New Jersey. Her socond son George Hays died in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania about 1863 or 1864 leaving no
family. Her daughter Martha Hays married Horace NICHOLS but both are dead
leaving
one daughter who married Smith CARTER. They lived in Newark, New Jersey in
1884. Mrs. Phebe Hays
was a member of the Presbyterian Church and died at Newark, New Jersey.

children.
Father, mother and all children are dead. They lived at Newark, New Jersey.

She married Oliver CRANE and had one child named David B. Crane who married Betsey
POTTER and had two
children. Emeline Crane and Oliver Crane. Emeline died at the age of seven
years. Olive married Sarah J. MEEKER and had one son named Clarence Harris Crane who
married Lizzie WINANS
and they had a son named Harris W. Crane born in 1884. The
Cranes lives near Union, New Jersey ELIZABETH HARRIS,
daughter of George Harris and Hannah TUNIS was born about 1780 in New
Jersey.
She married a man named MITCHELL and lived at or near Morristown, New Jersey. This is
all the information I
have concerning this family. No doubt she has descendants still living
in
New Jersey. SARAH HARRIS,
daughter
of George Harris and Hannah TUNIS was born about 1783 in New
Jersey. When she was four years old her parents moved to Washington
County, PA. She married John TUNIS, her cousin, when
about thirteen years of age. She had two children: Nehemiah Tunis and
Patience
Tunis. Nehemiah died
in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Tunis lived together for two or three years, but she having
married
so young, refused to leave her mother. Her husband, after a few years, finally
left her. Being a ship
carpenter, he could not find work in an inland town; but he still
supported his family, and when he died he left them well off. Mrs. Tunis lived a grass widow
the balance of her
life and died 24
October 1840. PATIENCE TUNIS,
daughter
of Sarah Harris and John TUNIS was born in Washington
County, PA. about 1799. She married Nehemiah BALDWIN and had five
children. John T., Sarah. Caleb Cephas and Ruth BALDWIN.
Mr. and Mrs Baldwin lived in and died at Fairfield, Jefferson
County,
Iowa. Mrs. Baldwin was noted for her enormous size weighing at one time about 460
pounds. ABIGAIL HARRIS,
daughter
of George Harris and Hannah TUNIS was born about 1785 in Essex
County,
New Jersey. When she was small she moved with her parents to Washington County, PA.
She married James
McGOWAN of Washington, PA., by whom she had on child, James McGowan Jr. He
married
and had two daughters. One daughter married but at last account was a widow. The
other daughter died of
consumption in 1864. James McGowan lived near Washington, PA. in
1883. HANNAH HARRIS,
daughter
of George Harris and Hannah TUNIS was born about 1786 in New
Jersey. She married Alexander McMULLEN 8 Feb 1794. They had
no
children. They both died in Washington County. They belonged to the old school Presbyterian
Church. PAMELIA HARRIS, daughter of George Harris and Hannah TUNIS was born in Washington County, PA 17 October 1788. She married Joseph MILLER 4 March 1813 and had seven children. After their marriage they settled in near the village of Amity in Washington County, PA. where they lived the balance of their lives. Pamelia died 3 March 1863 and Mr. Miller died 12 April 1885, aged ninety-five years. They were married fifty years lacking one day when Mrs. Miller died. They were both members of the Presbyterian Church.
Sleep on, thou reverand father; sleep in peace: Mr. Joseph Miller of whom mention has just been made was a person who had become quite conspicuous in the latter years of his life, on account of his intimate acquaintance with Rev. Spaulding, the author of the Book of Mormans. He furnished facts from personal recollections of the author, to different newspaper reporters the first in 1869 and then again in 1881. When visited by a reporter some two or three years before his death and was asked if he knew Rev. Solomon Spaulding, the author of the book of Morman, he quickly turned toward the reporter and his face brightened as his mind ran back to the past, and said with considerable emphasis, I certainly do. After being
questioned
for some time by the reporter, he then referred him to a passage on a
certain
page which he said was so strange that at the time Mr. Spaulding read it to him from
his manuscript, fixed
itself upon his memory, and that he had never forgotten it. He said
that
about 1812, Mr. Spaulding came to Amity, then a small
village in Washington County, Mr. Miller said that Spaulding was an enthusiastic archaelogist, and that he often indulged himself in the belief that the American continent was at one time peopled by a colony of ancient Israelites, and that his manuscript was only a fictitious history of the race which had built the mounds. Mr. Miller was the only man living at that time who was acquainted with Spaulding, at least the only person who has any knowledge of the correct origin of the Book of Morman, or who ever heard it read from the lips of the author. Mr. Miller said to the reporter while at his house, that as he neared the grave, with but one breath as it were between himself and heaven, he hoped that that last breath might carry a message that would prevent the people from being led to Mormanism, that most seductive delusion of the devil. Mr. Miller said that Spaulding was a good man, and that he would not cast a shadow on his memory, for it never was his intention to create a false religion by anything that he wrote. Mr. Miller said that he attended him through his last illness, and when death had called him from earth, Mr. Miller, with his own hands, made the coffin that contains his sleeping ashes. Mr. Spaulding was buried in the church yard of the village, and his grave remains unmarked, while the work of his idle hours of nearly eighty years ago has grown in the country he dearly loved, until the eyes of the nation are turned with horror upon its magnitude. Mr. Miller was an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a man of unimpeachable veracity. 1. Iowa. He died at Council Bluffs, Iowa about the year 1880. He weighed over 500 pounds.

He emigrated to Mt Gilead, then Richland but now Morrow County, Ohio in March of 1836. He married Rachel STRAW 22 January 1837 by whom he had eight children the oldest dying in infancy. His wife Rachel died 23 July 1862 and he married for his second wife Hannah PUGH 25 January 1866. Mr. Miller in his younger days was a contractor and house joiner but in later years became a farmer and stock-raiser. He was a Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church and was living near Mt. Washington
County, PA. He married Hannah CRAWFORD in 1839 and had three or four children, all
dying in infancy
except
one son, Joseph W. Miller. Joseph enlisted in the army and died in
a
hospital in Tennessee. He was the pride of a fond father's heart, but left father,
friends and home and
gave his life for his country. William Miller's wife died in
1848 and in a few years he married, Mary CARPENTER by whom he had
one child, a son named Plimpton Miller. His second wife
dying he married a third time to Sarah BRUCE. Mr. Miller is a
member
of the Presbyterian Church and he and his son Plimpton carrried on a furniture
store and an
undertaker's shop. They lived at Mt. Gilead, Morrow County, Ohio in
1885. JOHN F. MILLER, son of Pamelia Harris and Joseph MILLER was born 17 November 1820 in Washington County, PA. He married Deborah FULTON 6 Feb 1844 by whom he had one child that died at birth. His wife died 3 December 1845 and he married second Martha DeFRANCE 30 Dec 1846. They had twelve children. Mr. Miller is an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Presbyterian Church. Of his children, William

Union Army and lost an arm by a Rebel bullett in Louisiana. He
was
a lawyer. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. GILBERT E. MILLER,
son
of Nehemiah Miller and Rachel STRAW was born 30 September 1841 in
Morrow
County, Ohio. He married Harriet McCURDY 10 Oct 1865. They had no children and both
are members of the
Presbyterian Church. Mr. Miller was a Superintendant of the Infirmary
of Morrow County, Ohio in 1885. When the War of the Rebellion broke out he enlisted in
the Union Army and
served his country
three years. LUCINDA C. MILLER, daughter of Nehemiah Miller and Rachel STRAW was born 22 September 1844 in Morrow County, Ohio. She married L.H. BREESE 22 September 1870 by whom she had six children. Mr. Breese enlisted in the Union Army and was taken prisoner at a battle in Louisiana.
