Longtime pastor Norman Conlin of St. Leo's Church dies at age 71
Monsignor Norman R. Conlin, 71, longtime pastor
of St. Leo's Roman Catholic Church, died Tuesday (March 26, 1996) in the
Brothers of Mercy Sacred Heart Home, Clarence. He was born Aug. 26,
1924 in Buffalo, the son of Leo and Edith Conlin.
He entered the seminary at age 13. An
athlete in his youth, he was persuaded by a dedicated pastor to take the
seminary entrance exam. Once there he liked what he saw.
"I can't picture myself in any other line
of work. I find my fulfillment here," Conlin once said.
Conlin attended Our Lady of Angels Seminary
at Niagara University, where he later taught philosophical psychology.
Conlin worked as a train caller at the New York Central Depot in Buffalo
during his time at the seminary.
He started his ministry in a garage in Sheridan,
where he was sent as a missionary apostolate to organize a parish.
Within a year he celebrated Christmas Eve Mass at the new St. John Bosco
Church.
Conlin went on to be assistant pastor at Prince
of Peace in LaSalle for 5 1/2 years, Infant of Prague in Cheektowaga
for two years, St. Margaret's in Buffalo for 5 1/2 years, St. Mary of the
Cataract in Niagara falls for 3 1/2 years and St. John's in Kenmore for
3 1/2 years.
He was pastor of St. Leo's from 1989 until
the onset of his illness last year. Among his accomplishments are
the construction of a new 600-seat auditorium that now bears his name.
Mary Jane Uber, a longtime parishioner and
trustee at St. Leo's first met Conlin in 1949 at Prince of Peace Church,
where she was registering her 4-year-old son for school.
"He was a very handsome man. He had
curly hair and was tall, a very big fellow," Uber recalls.
"He built up the hall there. We do have
a beautiful hall," Uber said.
"His whole life was his priesthood.
He had parts of the parish that were very active and he was proud of them,"
she said. "He did not want to retire."
A capable administrator, Conlin can be credited
for making the parish self-sufficient, said parishioner Ed Reilly.
"He was a detail man, very conscientious.
He worked very hard to establish the parish," Reilly said. "At a
time when other parishes are having problems, St. Leo's is doing well as
a result of his efforts.
"He had a great sense of humor. He was
a great priest to go to for confession, many people said that. He
was very understanding."
Conlin maintained a full schedule until his
retirement, despite ill health in later years.
"It was suggested to him that he cut back
on the number of masses. He refused, because he was afraid he might
lose some of the parishioners," Reilly said
Always alarmed about the declining number
of young men choosing the priesthood, Conlin worked to bring parishioners
into new roles to fill the gap.
"God is still in control. There are
many ways to accomplish what the church is meant to do," Conlin once said.
"His main concern was the religious education
of the children. He wanted them to have the right moral grounding,"
Reilly said.
Conlin is survived by a brother, Francis Conlin
of St. Peter, MO.; a sister Rita O'Donnel of East Amherst; and several
nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Joseph Conlin
and Sister Marie Canisius, S.B.S.
