Hollreiser

Descendants of Johann Hollreiser

(Numbers within parenthesis at the beginning of a fmaily are generation numbers. i.e (1) Johann Hollreiser is the first generation we have information about.)

(1.) Johann Hollreiser was born about 1666 somewhere in Prussia, probably near Tulling ,Velden Parish, Bavaria; died December 28, 1726 at Stiglgrueb (farm), Velden Parish, Bavaria. The name of Johann's wife is unknown. The surname Hollreiser is a Celtic name dating back to the pre-Germanic Roman-Celtic period. For several generations the Hollreiser family lived on a farm called Hollreis near Tulling. Hollreis is about 17 kilometers southeast of Munich. The church books from the Velden Parish are located in the central archives in Munich, moved there in May 1998. German research on the Hollreisers was done by Reinhard Hofer of Hutting, Germany at the request of Edward Lawrence Hollreiser of New York. Child of Johann Hollreiser was:

(2.) Joannes Hollreiser, born 1697 at probably Stiglgrueb (farm), Velden Parish, Bavaria; died November 11, 1759 (age 62) . He married Anna M. Steerin who died before 1759. Joannes was a "colonus" or farmer. His death record is recorded in Velden Parish church book, vol. 42, No. 238. Child of Joannes and Anna (Steerin) Hollreiser was:

(3.) Andreas Hollreiser, born at Stiglgrueb (farm), Velden Parish, Bavaria, was christened November 19, 1714. He was married about 1735, to Barbara Birnkammer. She was born in Gaindorf, Prussia. Andreas' godfather was Georgius Hueber of Segestaus. His baptism is recorded in Velden Parish church book, vol. 6 p342 No. 113. Andreas probably founded Hollreis Farm.

Hollreis Farm today

Child of Andreas and Barbara (Birnkammer) Hollreiser was:

(4.)  Antonius "Anton" Hollreiser, born June 9, 1738 at Hollreis (farm), Velden, Steinhoring Parish, Bavaria. Holreis Farm belonged to Baron Mandl of Hubenstein before 1845. The farm is still in operation and owned by George Lohner. Anton 's godfather was Joannes Hoffstetter of Hoch. Antonius' birth/ baptism record is recorded in Velden church book, vol. 8 p 454 No. 63. He married (1) June 2, 1769, at Tulling, Bavaria, to Maria Kreuzer, daughter of Kaspar Kreuzer. She died January 29, 1781 shortly after giving birth. Remarks by a parish priest found in Familienbuch Pfarrei Steinhöring:  "Anton Hollreiser got by his father, Andreas Hollreiser, a fortune of 200 Gulden Fl. when he married Maria Kreuzer, daughter of the late blacksmith of Tulling, Kaspar Kreuzer. Then Anton became blacksmith in Tulling." (When Anton and Maria were married, she was the mother of three illegitimate children by Korbinian Wagner: Balthazar b 1762; Andreas b 1763; and Maria b 1765, according to Familienbuch Pfarrei Steinhoring, researched 1998 by Reinhard Hofer).

Antonius "Anton" and Maria (Kreuzer) Hollreiser had three children: Melchior Hollreiser, born June 6, 1770; Barbara Hollreiser, born June 23, 1775 and an infant Hollreiser, born and died January 14, 1781, all born at Tulling.

Anton married (2) May 1, 1782, probably at Tulling, Bavaria, to Ursula Fischer of Haberl (farm), Zell, Albaching Parish. Ursula was born about 1755. Anton sold the smithy in 1798 and the farm in 1802 for 1,500 Gulden Fl. Later Anton and second wife Ursula settled in a place called Edacher in Stehbach.

Children of Antonius "Anton" and Ursula (Fischer) Hollreiser, all born at Tulling, were: Maria Hollreiser, born October 2, 1785; Elisabeth Hollreiser, born May 20, 1787; Anna Hollreiser, born September 2, 1788; Johann-Baptist Hollreiser, born May 12, 1790 and Johannes Michaelis "Michael" Hollreiser, born September 27, 1794.

(5.) Johannes Michaelis "Michael" Hollreiser, born September 27, 1794 at Tulling; died May 3, 1877 (82 years 7 months) at his home at Tafelhof, Landstrabe 39, Nuremberg, Germany. He was married to Anna Maria Will. Michael's death record, No. 900, located at Nuremburg, gives his occupation (retired) as a "guterlader" or coachman. Michael was a Catholic. Tulling is about 200 km from Nuremburg. Michael must have moved at least twice. His son, Bernard was born in 1837 in Ansbach, near Nuremburg. Johannes Michaelis "Michael" and Anna Maria (Will) Hollreiser are believed to have had three sons. Bernhardus Gottlieb Daniel "Bernard" Hollreiser, Berhard who lived in Nuremburg in 1863 and Leonard who lived in Spira (Speyer) in 1863.

(6.) Bernhardus Gottlieb Daniel "Bernard" Hollreiser, born May 1837 at Ansbach, Bavaria, Germany; died February 27, 1910 (age 73) 814 Courtlandt Ave. {Bronx, Cert. No.1238} of stomach cancer; buried March 1, 1910 at Lutheran Cemetery, Middle Village, N.Y. He was married (1) May 23, 1865, at Edenkoben, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany to Anna "Philippina" Satter, daughter of Johannes "Jacob" Satter and of Eva Margaretha Gleich. Edenkoben is near Mannheim, which is about 240 kilometers west of Nuremburg. Anna "Philippina" was born February 17, 1836 Edenkoben, Pfalz, Bayern (Bavaria), Germany, and died December 7, 1884 in New York of Bright's Disease. One record shows her name as Anna Elisabetha. Bernard married (2) February 28, 1889, at Brooklyn, N.Y. {Cert. No. 2754},  to Augusta Henriette Spangehl Schulz, a widow. She was the daughter of Carl Ludwig Spangehl and Henriette Mallentz.

Bernard was a carpenter at Spira, Pfalz, Germany. He and Philippina were married after getting a dispensation from the Catholic church because she was not a Catholic.

Bernard and his family came to America on the steamship S.S. Fulton, arriving December 14, 1867. They left La Havre and stopped at Falmouth on the trip, according to Master Charles H. Townsend's manifest. Bernard, 30, was listed as a carpenter. With him and Philippina, 31, were Lisette, 6 months, Betchan, 4, and Carl, 11. Bernard's death certificate No. 1238 says he came to America about 1865. It is unknown if he came in 1865 then went back to get his family, or if the record is incorrect. The family would have been processed at Castle Garden (at the foot of Manhattan, Battery Park). (Germany was at war in 1864 and 1866. The Franco-Prussian War took place in 1870 with German armies leaving the Speyer area. The Franco-Prussian war ended when French Emperor Louis Napoleon surrendered his sword to William, King of Prussia. Perhaps, Bernard saw trouble coming and left the country to protect his family.)

The 1870 New York census gave his name as Benjamin and son August's marriage records gives his name as Benjamin. His death certificate says Bernhard and his naturalization record says Barnhard. Bernard filed his Declaration of Intent (No. 113) to become a citizen September 28, 1875 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen June 10, 1878 in the Superior Court, New York County, N.Y. His address at the time was 306 E. 46th St., Manhattan. His witness was John Muller, a cabinet maker who lived at 238 E. 46th St. The record is found in Bundle No. 289.

The family lived at 153 E. 42nd St. from 1872-1876, according to the birth certificates of sons Frederick and August. From 1878-1884 they lived at 306 E. 46th St.; in 1900 they lived at 448 E. 78th St.; in 1910, 814 Courtlandt Ave. All of these addresses are in Manhattan, N.Y.

Jacob Satter, unknown relationship but probably Philippina's brother, was named as a sponsor in the oldest child's christening records. He was also a cabinet maker. Philippina and Bernard may have had 12 children, but we can only find records for 10. Philippina and Bernard are buried at the Lutheran Cemetery at Middle Village, N.Y. She arrived in America December 4,1867 with two children; Bernard (or Leonhard) and Philippina "Elizabeth," according to the book "1833 Thru 1906 Palatine Emigrants from Edenkoben (in Rheinland Pfalz, West Germany) to North America," p86, by Alfred Hans Kuby. Apparently two other children, Wilhelmina and Leonardus, died before the family's emigration.

Children of Bernhardus Gottlieb Daniel "Bernard" and Anna "Philippina" (Satter) Hollreiser were as follows:

  (7) i. Philippina "Elizabeth" Hollreiser, born November 7, 1857 at Edenkoben, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany, christened November 20, 1857 at Edenkoben Catholic Church. Her christening record states she is the "illegitimate child of Anna Elisabetha Satter, not Catholic, and Bernard Hollreiser, a cabinet maker from Spira." Her sponsor was Jacob Satter, cabinetmaker in Edenkoben. Jacob was probably a brother of her mother, although the true relationship is unknown.  The 1870 federal census gives her age as 11, but birth records indicate she would have been 12 when the census was taken.

  (7) ii. Leonardus "Leonard" Hollreiser, born Jul y 5, 1861 at Edenkoben, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany, christened July 8, 1861 at Edenkoben Catholic Church, No. 15; died October 10, 1861; buried at Edenkoben. The immigration records list Leonard with a birth date of July 10, 1863, which is his brother Bernie's birthdate. Those abstracting the records may have misread Bernard for Leonard. According to Leonard's christening records he was "the iligitimate son of Anna Philippina Satter, not Catholic, and Bernard Hollreiser, cabinet maker from Spira, who is the confessed father." The sponsor was Leonard Hollreiser, brother of the father, from Spira.

    (7) iii. Bernhardi "Bernie" Hollreiser, born July 10, 1863 at Edenkoben, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany, christened July 14, 1863 at the Catholic Church in Edenkoben. His sponsor was Bernahard, brother of the father, from Nuremburg. died September17, 1950 at  Carpenters Home Hospital, Lakeland, Polk Co., Florida, {death cert. No. 20144}; buried at Carpenters Cemetery, Lakeland, Florida. He was married by the Rev. H. Hebler on September 9, 1885, at Second Immanuel Lutheran Church, Manhattan, New York County, N.Y., {Cert. No. 3067} to Rosina "Rosa" Eberhart, daughter of Moritz Eberhart and of Rosine "Rosa" Burkle. She was born May 13, 1861 in Manhattan, {Birth Certificate No. 22698}. Rosina died of a heart attack March 19, 1937 at a movie theater at 4420 White Plains Ave. Her residence at the time was 680 E. 287 St., Bronx, N.Y. She was buried at the Lutheran Cemetery, Lot 9046, Map 4, Metropolitan Avenue at 67th Street, Middle Village, Queens County, N.Y. {Her death certificate is No. 3067.}

We have the name Leonard in the passenger records, but believe the abstracters misread Bernhardi for Leonard, or it is possible his given name was Leonard Bernhardi. In Germany it was common to give the same first name to several children. The family lived at 306 E. 46th St., Manhattan in 1885; 370 E. 74th St., Manhattan in 1889; in 1894, they were at 630 East 207th Street, The Bronx, Bronx County; 410 78th St., Manhattan in 1900; in 1920, 2812 Arthur Avenue, The Bronx, Bronx County; in 1937, 680 East 207th Street, The Bronx; 1938-1942, a Boarding House in the Catskill Mountains, New York State and 1942 and 1950, Carpenters' Home, Lakeland, Polk County, Florida.

Like his father, Bernhardi was a cabinet maker and carpenter. Rosine was only 16 when they got married {Cert. No. 49168}. The 1915 New York census names his wife as "Matilda." This record says he had been in the United States for 10 years and had been naturalized

While in school, she took piano lessons for several years but did not keep it up. Alice worked for Sylvania Electric Company, General Telephone and Electrics Laboratories, and General Dynamics Corporation, all located at Radio City, 50th Street and Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York County, New York. During her time at General Dynamics, she worked for the vice presidents of engineering and of personnel. In 1970, when General Dynamics moved to St. Louis, Missouri, Alice, instead, found a job at the American Can Company in Westchester County, New York; she worked there for the director of Patent and Trademark Law. After nine years, she left American Can and took temporary work at the Nestle Company where she spent about ten years in various capacities, including taking the place of the secretary to the president when the secretary was on vacation or needed help. When Nestle moved to California in 1992-1993, Alice took a job as a "temporary" at White Plains Hospital, White Plains, Westchester County, New York, and was there until 1995. By that time, she had been living at the Andrus Retirement Community in Hastings-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York for almost four years and decided to call it quits and retire. [Abstracted by Alice's 2nd cousin, Edward Lawrence Hollreiser, August 11, 2001, from material in a letter to him from Alice, written August 17, 1999].
