Births, Deaths, Marriages
Index to Surnames
June 2002 I have superceded this index. This index has not been updated (and does not
include the BEW deaths 1855 & 1872, or SEL & PEE deaths 1874. The new index can be found
here.
- This index lists all surnames mentioned in the BDM records that I have. ("All" does
not include the names of Registrars, Doctors, Ministers or Procurators Fiscal).
- There are two types of entry:
- Main entries (ie. the person who was born, died or married) consist of Surname, Firstname
a link to the page containing the entry, and a short list of related surnames.
These surnames
occur in the order they are found in the entry.
- For the case of births this is generally
the mothers' maiden name. If there is no associated surname with a birth, then either the mother
had the same (maiden)surname as the father, or the child was illegitimate.
- The sequence for deaths can vary, for children (and single people) it will be
the maiden name
of the mother. For married women, it will be their maiden name (i.e. father's surname), followed
by mother's maiden surname. In the case of married men, it will be their wife's surname, followed
by their mother's maiden surname.
- For marriages, I have decided to put the spouse's name in capitals, followed by
mother's maiden name, then spouse's mother's maiden name, and then any other (witnesses) different
surnames.
- Other entries consist of a surname, a cross reference to the main entry, and a handy wee
link to take you there. If there appears to be a duplicate entry (for example Ponton cross-referenced
to Lindors) this is because there are two such pairs. (In the example, two brothers died, and
so the mother is referenced to both of them).
- Extra surnames also turn up, when more distant people (aunts, brothers-in-law, neighbours etc.)
are the witness for the registration.
- The deaths of Married women are indexed under the name the death was regsitered under (generally the
married name). The maiden name will have a cross-reference with it.
- confused yet?
- Of course you can just click around the place and see what you find
- And don't forget to check spelling variations, some writing is difficult to distinguish. I have
noted words I am unsure of in the entries with a [?] (but not in this index
