  • NOTE ---
There are two Mr. Connolly's in Portland, Maine in the time period ... and each married a Winnifred McGowan.
  • Both have employment histories as 'teamster's.
  • Bernard Connolly arrived earlier, and is in Portland, Me. as early as 1859. ... Bryan Connolly [GGF-SMC et al] arrived about 1863-1867.
  • Brian Connolly is in the Portland, Maine 1880 - US Census with a family & wife Winifred McGowan including Joseph A [GF-SMC]; with employment as a teamster; and was then or later employed by the City of Portland (family oral history & other records); an enablement of citizenship - cf. naturalization records elsewhere here.
  • Bryan Conley is the prior and alternate spelling of Brian Connolly - he probably adapted to the form of the Portland illustrious & prosperous standard of Cornelius Connolly. [family & official records re the spelling]
  • Bernard Connolly, & family are in the 1870 Maine census .. Bryan Conley is in the Massachusetts census -- al of his and winifred McGowan Connolly's children are Maine born; save daughter Teresa - Massachusetts born. [family lived in Taunton, Ma -more after further census & record check] .. likely drove a 'team' in the textile plants area or other in Taunton (cotton mills etc).
  • 'Teresa' .. a witness to the marriage of Sarah Connolly is likely her sister .. Sarah is 'Sadie' in the 1880 census.
  • Terence McGowan is a likely 1st cousin (Winifred's nephew) .. and indices her father & brothers ..she's a daugter of Terence or Patrick ..the clothes dealing McGowans .. also possible that Terence is just a McGowan friend of similarly named McGowans. Several Terence McGowans immigrated to the USA -- from Philadelphia to Canada in several case names.
  • Children of Bernard Connolly & Winnifred McGowan ..may not be related.
  • Bernard & Bryan Connolly may / may not be related and are separate persons in the same time period.
  • Maria Conley (using the old spelling) is likely a younger sister of Joseph A. Connolly [GF-SMC]
  • Via other information (these records shared by Steve Coleman of Colorado - son/grandson? of Gerard Bernard Coleman)
  • Bernard Connolly & Winnifred McGowan Connolly are buried in calvary Cemetry in Portland (South Portland), Maine ... his notes also indicat Buzzards Bay & Mlton, ma for family members - for Bernard & an obituary for Winnifred [2 'n'] McGowan Connolly - his wife .. her mother is Sarah McGloin (death certificate also noted) -- father is Patrick McGowan
hence, SMC's GGM Winifred McGowan is daughter of Terence McGowan (an Uncle Terence is remembered orally referenced by SMC paternal aunt Sarah Connolly - name of her GGGF, Uncle & cousin & likley son (via others of John McGowan - Kinlough, Lietrim, Ireland - cf McGowan here - a Ms Ogillie in Portland, Oregon is the grand-d or daughter of a Patick McGowan from Portland Maine to Oregon in 1903 .. his parentage includes the elder Patrick McGowan, brother of Terence)
John McGowan was repoted killed in Lietrim in a wagon accident (a recently learned reference in family of one of the past generations Connolly or McGowan unknown then); and oral history fro SCs father placed his GF Connolly & GM McGowan as Ireland born -- from Lietrim.
  • Sarah Connolly Coleman is widowed ..and remarried in Rhode Island -- her father is referenced as bernard Connolly; other -Winnifred McGowan (possibly a clerical error as to her parents ..she is church noted as daughter of Bryan & Winifred Connolly [Conley] ... Maine relied on town/city/state vital records officially after 1892 - church & other local secular before that.
'Sarah Connolly Coleman' as 'Sadie Coleman' remarries one Grover C. Rice of organtown, W Va.; in Providence, RI 8/7/1914 .. RI-DVS record - book/page 23/124 --filed 9/1914
{1 marriage for groom 2d marriage for bride -widowed] .. marriage officiated by George W. Green - JP [Justice of Peace]
By Calvary Cemetery reference card ..Coleman is buried in he Bernard Connolly plot .. he is interred September 8, 1912 .. 42 yeasr old.
  • Bryan Connolly's wife customarily is spilled with one 'n' and is occasionally referenced and spelled as 'Winey' - pronounced 'Winnie' ... SMC's first cousin is named 'Brian' for his GGF. The Coleman's Bernard seems to come via Cornelius Coleman rather than Bernard Connolly .. cf. other family lore. Other Steve Coleman notes - a mary Connolly lived and died in Malden --whre SMC'c GF settled his family; Bernard died in East Milton 1926; Gerald B[ernard] Coleman died in New York in 1925; aged 26; Winnifred's address is given at Cumberland Ave in Portland; John B Connolly 1943 - Augusta, Me; Patrick F. 1966 ; Edwin H. Connolly in RI
  • Cornelius Coleman is likely buried in Bernard Connolly's family gravesite as a courtesy/kindness.
  • Steve Coleman is the grandson, by his reference, of Gerald Coleman who died in 1925; the son of Cornelius Coleman & Sarah 'Sadie' Connolly married and birth noted above. Cornelius immigrated, by Steve Coleman's note in 1875 from Limerick, Ireland. Hence Steve Coleman the grandson of a paternal great aunt is a fourth cousin of SMC & his generation of Connollys. Their G-GP's in common: Bryan Connolly & Winifred McGowan; their closest blood relation -Sarah 'Sadie' Connolly -- the sister of Joseph Augustus[ine] Connolly ...GF of SMC et al.
  • Another family coincidence note .. SMC's GGF Charles Scott - described by SMC's father as a businessman .. .had offices shared in the Portland Directory with his son in law Joseph A. Connolly (married Sarah Scott) & some of the teamster Connolly's. One of the Maine census Charles Scott records a man by that name in Lubec, Maine married to a Mary Alice (he is Maine born she NB born) ..and he has a 'trucking' business (occupation "truckmen") - he may descend from Samuel Scott (1787 US born) of Calais, Maine with a brother Henry Scott (my GG-GF fther of Chas H.Scott) .. 'Mary Alice' Scott was also my maiden paternal Great-Aunt's name. Perhaps Connollys & Scott's came together at the Portland business door? [SMC is named for his two paternal GP's surnames] .. both of GGF Chas. H. Scott's parents were Maine born .. the other Charles & Mary Alice Scott is a possible uncle & aunt. Census record check in progress. [Calais borders St Stephen in Charlotte, County New Brunswick]. Samuel Scott was a farmer and part of the settlement encouraged by massachusetts & Maine interests to bolster the American population on the Maine side of the river .. economic loyalists rather than King George III loyalists.
Not unusual for a 'truckng' business minded man to bring the business to Portland.
  • Records referenced here by Steve Coleman are acquired by his documentation request, certified via Roman Catholic archives in Portland, Maine ... birth & baptismal & marriage records - dated 1997, etc, certified by Rev. Nadeau (now rector, Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Portland, Maine); supplemented with Portland, Maine Calvary Cemetery references. Records acqured personally by Mr. Coleman of Colorado.
  • Other note of interest - Catholic v. Protestant customs? ... SMC's paternal GM (Sarah Scott Connolly) noted that none of here children were given a middle name; until RC confirmation. (Her paternal GM & GF were likely married in a Congregationalist Church ceremony - her mother was RC Mary Ann Durgin .. married in Cape Elizabeth, Maine to Charles H. Scott .. a RC baptism, at marriage, of Charles Scott [PP) is not part of the family record.
  • Another archives oddity -- Maine State Archives Marriage Index [online pre-1892-1966] reports no Cornelius Coleman / Sarah Connolly marriage .... but does list a Portland, Maine 1909 marriage of a Sarah Connolly and 'CLISHAM' [sic] Coleman.
