Ashford, Ct. to Halifax, Vermont

Henry Scott's father moved his family from Ashford, Ct. to Halifax, Vermont at the time of the American Revolution - about 1775-1778.

Halifax was founded in 1761; West Halifax in 1750. The town is located across the Vermont border with Massachusetts above Route 2 - adjoining Colrain, Massachusetts via Route 112.

That part of Vermont, claimed by Massachusetts before Vermont's statehood was swapped with the colony, and later State of Connecticut in a resolution of Massachusetts and Connecticut's borders. Its lands were offered to "Connecticut Settlers".

Genealogical Approach

This webmaster, searching on-line records for GGG-GF Henry Scott, returned to the Family Search genealogy data center .. and re-reviewed the Civil record for Henry Scott & Sarah Jones marriage in 1807. Adjoining it now, were two additional ancsetral pedigree files; te result of another's further genealogical research. referencing them, one learns that Henry Scott -as the civil record affirms - was born in West Halifax Vermont; of Thomas Scott & Sarah Hale.

That new information was learned about May 5, 2004. I travelled personally to vermont, may 9 2004 (Sunday) to see the town hoing to find graves. About 3:45 pm as I drove through Halifax Center (a 4 road crossing of Jacksonville Stage Road, Old County Line Road, and Stowe Mountain Road) - I saw the square open field cemetery field just a few yards north of the crossroads. My GGGG-GP's graves are marked by old weathered -- but legible slate headstones; wild blueberry & wild flower covered; amidst the marbles and other stones for their childrend new-in-laws who died there. Some of their descendants still live in Halifax.
The area was known to me before, and I had many times drive past Halifax on Route 112 - also to Colrain, Massachusetts - but had not known of the ancestral grave; nor of Thomas and Sarah [Hale] Scott until that date. My family's home and my present residence is 60 miles south in West Springfield, Ma. My father settled here after an Air Force career -last at nearby Westover AFB - both he and my mother were raised in Lexington, Massachusetts - my paternal grandparents moved there from Portland, Maine. Ashford, Ct. from which Thomas Scott started is bout 40 miles southeast. Portland, Maine is about 180 miles northeast.

My adult residences elsewhere have included Washington, DC; Maryland; Seattle, Washington; San Francisco, Ca; and Honolulu, Hawaii.
A mystery of our family's Henry Scott - born in 1783 -has been solved.

Other than public and shared genealogical records on line - I have been unable to see or consult old extensive family records once kept by Great Aunt Mary Alice Scott. Until in a separate family property - my Great Aunt's letter to my mother and father about the ancestry - I was trying to decipher 19th century Maine 'Henry's Scott'. Grave of Henry M. Scott above in Evergreen Cemetery Portland, Maine was made by my brother CPO Charles M. Connolly 2000; enlarged for dates and name legibility by me.

A topograhic image of Halifax Vermont today.
My name carries a memory of the SCOTT Family legacy.
