Illegitimate son of Robert I, duke of Normandy, he became duke of Normandy in 1035 and King of England from 1066 to 1087. William visited England in about 1051, when Edward the Confessor may have promised to make him his heir. In 1064 Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, was shipwrecked off Ponthieu in France and taken to William, who made him swear to uphold the Duke's claim to the English throne. In 1066, on hearing that Harold had been crowned king, William invaded England and defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings. He was crowned in London on Christmas Day, 1066.

Between 1066 claim 1072 William crushed the opposition of the Saxon nobles; he built castles and called in most of the English titles and estates and reassigned them on a feudal basis to his Norman followers. In 1085 he ordered a general survey of lands, their value and their holders that resulted in the Domesday Book.
