Dear Simon,

I  recently discovered by chance, the web page "Copestakes in the 1861
Census of Derbyshire". I found it very interesting, as one of my ancestors,
Thomas, married Eliza Copestake at Wirksworth on the 24th of July 1836.* It
was with this reference in mind, that I read the Census details 2521,
Ashbourne, details that I already have, and noticed that there was a mistake
in the details of William Copestake, grandson, unm, 22, tailor, Ochaston.
His birthplace should read as Osmaston.

Eliza Gerard (nee Copestake)died 28th of March 1850, aged 39 years of
Tuberculosis, leaving Thomas to bring up three Sons, Joseph, Thomas and
John. They appear in the 1851 Census for Ashbourne as Thomas Jarratt, Hd, M,
44, Labourer, Bradley, Joseph Jarratt, Son,14, Servant, Painters Lane,
William Jarratt, Son, 12, At Home and John Jarratt, Son, 6, At Home.

I believe it was the same William Copestake mentioned above, who bore
witness to the marriages of his Cousins Thomas Gerard  (Jarard) in 1863 and
Joseph Gerard in 1866.

I've traced my family line back to John Gerrard, he died in 1796 at
Ellastone at the age of 88 years. There is no trace of him being Christened
at Ellastone circa 1708, however, there is reference to a John Garrat
Christened at Checkley which is not too far away, still much to prove
though!

I hope this is of some interest to you

Best Regards

Keith John Gerard

Simon Martin's response is as follows:

The Grandfather of Joseph Gerard according to the 1861 Census is a John Copestake aged 82 [b.c. 1779] in Shirley

There are two possible John Copestakes [John Copestakes being had to tell apart]:

[9751] DERBYSHIRE, BRAILSFORD, PARISH REGISTER, BAPTISMS John son. of John Copestake bap 4.9.1777;
IGI 1988 DERBYSHIRE 4756 COPESTAKE,JOHN JOHN COPESTAKE/ M/C 04SEP1775 BRAILSFORD
the child of
DERBYSHIRE, MARRIAGES, DERBYSHIRE MARRIAGE INDEX Brailsford Ph. Jn COPESTAKE, of Muggington, 24 June 1770, Hannah ENSOR lic

[11701] Chr. 1 Apr 1781 at Cubley to
DERBYSHIRE, MARRIAGES, DERBYSHIRE MARRIAGE INDEX Cubley PR Francis COPESTAKE p.Shirley, 5 Apr 1779 Eliz SLATER.otp .B.

I favour the second entry as they do have Shirley connections.
