Extent

This was a very extensive parish during the 1800s with large numbers of marriages and baptisms taking place the same day, but not as many as Manchester Cathedral which had hundreds.

Most Wigan, Pemberton, and Orrell events were registered at Wigan. Orrell and Pemberton did not really get their own parishes, and hence registers, till the early 1900s.

Orrell - Some Orrell events were registered at Up Holland. Some baptisms of Orrell people at Up Holland Church have been copied into the first baptism register of Orrell St Luke. St Luke, Orrell has not deposted its registers from the 1920s including this first register. From at least the 1970s parish register entries at St Luke Orrell have appeared in their parish magazine some copies of which I have deposted at Leigh archives [see below under Banns]

IGI Please note the IGI Entries for this parish are taken from a very imperfect transcript of the Parish Registers of Wigan in Manchester Library

British Vital Records Index on CD-Rom includes Wigan Christenings 1864-1869 from the Bishop's Transcripts [BTs] at Lancashire record Office

"Purple Patches" The Baptisms in the 1820s - 30s include dates of birth and a purported order of the child in the family ie 1st son of, 2nd daughter of, etc. I suspect some of these to be wrong from other evidence. These do not seem to have been duplicated in the BTs at Lanacshire Records Office.

Banns Registers - these have been found to have survived. The only actual mention of them is in the Wigan Metro Guide to the Archives [not the genealogical guide]. They are NOT microfilmed and can only be viewed, if they are not too fragile, at Leigh archives, once an appointment has been made with the archivist. Currently they are only open two days a week and parking in Leigh is horendous. There are no trains to Leigh, there is a bus service from Wigan, but if you get on the wrong bus it takes over an hour. They survive 1754-1868 with gaps. One known gap is just prior to 23 Aug 1813. Check the banns register you want survives and is not too fragile foor production before travelling.
