- ULPH Mentioned p 10 "... the first recorded Patron
was a Saxon Thane, named Ulph or Ulphus. He was
assassinated in 1029, but prior to that he had bequeathed
parts of his estates to York Minster, giving his drinking
horn as the title deed. This horn, with its beautiful
Syrian carving and silver bands, is now one of the
Minster's treasures."
- Robert of Mortain Mentioned p10 "After the Norman
Conquest, William I gave the land round Hamlake to his
halk-brother, Earl Morton or the Count of Mortain. It is
interesting to note the cuteness of the Conqueror in
dispensing of such gifts in parts of the country wide
apart, for this same Count held the estate of Pevensey in
Sussex, where the Conqueror landed from Normandy.] The
second Count was attainted and his estates handed over to
Sir Walter L'Espec, the friend of Prince Henry, who
afterwards became Henry I. L'Espec was descended from one
of the barons who came over with the Conqueror, his
brother having estates in Somerset. (Speke, the
discoverer of the source of the Nile, was descended from
the Somerset branch of the family)."
- Melrose mentioned page 13 - Melrose was a daughter abbey
to Rievaulx so if it had not been for Rievaulx, Sir
Walter Scott would not have Written:- "If thou
wouldst view fair Melrose aright, Go visit it by the pale
moonlight." [SM - One of the 3 oil paintings I have
produced is of Melrose where Sir Walter Scot was
eventually buried]
