My great grandfather was Captain Joe Ellery who with his two brothers Sam(?) and Abraham , also master mariners sailed schooners out of Fowey in the middle of the last century.Joe was master of the schooner ECLAT which disappeared on a voyage to Newfoundland around 1880. He left a large family and some of the boys followed in his footsteps and went to sea as shipmasters eventually. One was a Captain Joe Ellery also, who while master of either the LINGFIELD or the MAYFIELD during the first world war, was captured at sea by an Austrian submarine and taken to Austria as prisoner of war. When he as taken away his son Willy was on board as an apprentice, I believe this was in many newspapers at the time. Willy also became a master for Seagers a Cardiff shipping company, long out of business, and was torpedoed in the second war.
I do not know what happened to him. Another son of Captain Joe senior was Alf Ellery who became quite high in the trade union movement in Bristol and was made an OBE. He was for a long time ssociated with Ernest Bevin who was foreign minister in the Atlee government. It appears after the loss of Joe Senior the family left South Cornwall the boys for Bristol and Cardiff, particularly Cardiff which was the major port in the UK in the late 19th century. My grandmother married Fred Chappell a marine engineer in Cardiff, Their son Henry Chappell was for many years master for R&B Chellew of Truro Cornwall's biggest shipowner after Hains of St Ives. He was also Capt in the RNR and controlled the port of Takoradi for a long time when it was the main supply port for the Eighth Army, afterwards he went to the Normandy Landings as a beachmaster and eventually ran the Mulberry Harbor at Arromanches. I also became a master mariner with Furness Withy of London an E.T.Radcliffe of Cardiff, I trace my connection with the sea to the Ellerys.
Trust this will be of interest

Their son, William (one of many sons and daughters) became a captain for the Brocklebank Line in Liverpool and wrote his memoirs of 50 years in sailing ships for the Wallesey newpaper. He is also written about in a book about the Brocklebank Line. Harriet and William left St. Columb Minor as the farm which had been owned by William's father Richard Ellery failed (presumable due to the Corn Laws) and the family moved tp Liverpool. I have a letter dated 1880 from a Harrison Ellery in Boston to Walter Ellery - saying that he was sure the families were connected. William Ellery the sea captain also wrote that he had always heard that the family had gone to America in the days of Queen Elizabeth - I would love to be able to trace these connections.

I am compiling a booklet about William James ELLERY (b1829) who was a blockmaker on an emigrant ship (Plymouth to Quebec) when it sank in 1855. He survived, but almost 200 passengers drowned and the Captain was tried for manslaughter (Acquitted).
I'd be delighted to hear from anybody who may have a connection with any of these families.

John; Caroline; Charles; Mary; Emma; Elias and Joseph all travelled to Australia aboard the ship "Queen of the Colonies" and landed 14/10/1866 in Moreton Bay.
John died in Copperfield via Clermont (an hours drive from me) in 1877 there is a plaque at the cemetary which has his name on it and his date of death and age of death, if I remeber correctly. The register lists his mother as Mary Trudgion.
Charles died and was buried in Clermont in 1867. Lists his parents as Hannah Husband and John Ellery.
Joseph Emmanuel died and was also buried in Clermont 1868. Lists his parents as Caroline Hicks and John Ellery.
In 1871 John Ellery (son of Hannah Husband and John Ellery) married Bridget Pender in Clermont. Their first three children were born in Clermont being:
Charles, 4/4/1872; John, 1/5/1873; Mary Ann, 28/12/1874. There next child Florence was born at Dee River Coppermine (near Mt. Morgan, being nearly 6
hour drive from where I am, in Moranbah) 20/01/1877. After Florence, was your William 24/05/1879, then Thomas Henry, 23/07/1881; George, 14/08/1883;
Lilly, 12/11/1885; and last was Lousia 09/05/1888.
Florence is my GGrandmother. She firstly married John Greenland in Charters Towers in 1898, from this marriage came William Elias b. 23/10/1899. John later died in the Boar War. Florence then met Donald McPhee, she produced 4 illegitimate children to him being: Louisa b. 10/07/1910; Norma b. 24/06/1912; Elsie Maud b. 27/07/1914 and Donald b. 16/08/1916. They then married in Charters Towers on 09/10/1916. Their only legitimate child is my grandfather and his name is Stanely Norman McPhee b. 07/03/1919.

I have just started to try and trace my wife's Cornish ancestors and so far, thanks to another relative have been given a good start.
My wife's great grandmother was Catherine ELLERY born 2 sept 1848 at Calstock. Her parents were Richard Hooper ELLERY, born ca 1817 St Mabyn and Mary Jane TRETHEWY. Family legend has it that Richard worked on the Saltash Ferry and once threw a soldier into the water for not paying his fare!
Richard's parents were Thomas ELLERY born ca1790 at Egloshayle and Eleanor HOOPER (1791 St Austell) >Thomas's parents were Thomas ELLERY b ca 1760 and Rebecca MAY b ca 1762 St Minver. Thomas and Rebecca were married on the 16th May 1782 at >Egloshayle.

Have several William Ellery names in the family that come from the signer of the DOI but I cannot seem to connect. There must have been a female Ellery that married a William M. Fish who resided mostly
in Kentucky. They had a daughter named Almira who married a Stephenson.
The children are all named William Ellery Stephenson Jarrett I, II, III.
Just one of the many genealogy mysteries I am working on!
