Located on land purchased by Lynde Lyons Latimer, son of Jonathan Latimer, III, of Sumner County, Tennessee, Latimer Cemetery is the "family burying place" of Lynde Latimer's clan. By deed A-262 Lynde first purchased land on Halls Creek in Humphreys County in 1815 and again in 1820 by deed B-421. Lynde died in 1844, and after the death of his wife, Mary (Polly) Hamilton in 1854, sons, Robert Alexander Latimer and Albert Latimer bought their siblings' interest in the land. These heirs of Lynde and Mary Latimer are identified in deed M-240 as John and Jane (Latimer) Holland, John P. and Margaret H. Ann (Latimer) Madden, Thomas H. Latimer, James F. Latimer, Clarissa Latimer, Jonathan C. Latimer (of Benton County), Eliza (Latimer) McNeel (of Benton County), Jacob Latimer (of Weakley County), and William B. Latimer (of Stewart County). Robert Alexander Latimer and Albert Latimer are also identified as heirs. Latimer Cabin at Halls Creek

By deeds W-361 in 1878 and 1-278 in 1884, Robert A. Latimer purchased Albert's interest in their father's land from James Buchanan Latimer, and Mary Jane Latimer, children of Albert. In 1904 Robert A. Latimer sold the land to his son, William Lyons Latimer for $1. Obviously named after his grandfather, William L. Latimer lived his entire life in the cabin that his grandfather built on Halls Creek.

William's daughter, Mary Latimer, never married and was living in the cabin in 1990 when I had the opportunity to visit her. While the cabin is still in the family, the Latimer land around the cemetery has been sold; however, the cemetery itself remains in the family and is still used by the descendants of Lynde Latimer as a "family burying place."
