Willliam Clinton

I have personally done little research on this family to date. Much of the information I have came from Geneva McCown Garrett and Becky Z. Linda Feaster has William Clinton's parents as Jonathan Robert Clinton and his mother was named Nancy.

William Clinton is the earliest Clinton ancestor I have knowledge of. He was born in about 1790 in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Freeman on March 2, 1834 in Crawford County, MO. Elizabeth was born 3 March 1807 in Buncombe County, NC, daughter of Aaron Freeman, Jr. and Alabeth Ball. (NOTE: Alabeth attempted to claim land in Choctaw Indian lands in Mississippi about 1830/31. Her grandson, John H. Bennight, filed an application with the Dept. of the Interior, Bureau of Indian affairs [date unknown as yet] for identification as a Mississippi Choctaw. According to the report, there is conflicting testimony as to which parent of Alabeth had the Choctaw blood, but it appears to be her mother.)

William and Elizabeth had the following children: Augustus, Aaron, Agnes, Ryel, Eleanor, Alsey, Julia Ann, William, Mary, and Jenny (Jincy).

I have no information about William's death or burial, but Elizabeth died on 20 July 1882, and is buried in the Mt. Ararat Cemebery in Douglas County, Missouri.

The first born, son Augustus, was born in about 1834. He married Emily Jane Beacher and they had at least one son, named Nicholas, who married first Matilda Ann Pruitt and second Nancy Pierce. (NOTE: Source is Becky Z.)

I have information from an unknown source that gives a birthdate of 9 September 1841 and date of death of 10 March 1814 for the daughter Eleanor.

Their first daughter, Agnes, is my 2X great-grandmother. She was born in about 1838 in Taney County, MO.

Agnes married Andrew Jackson Morrow (born about 1833 in NC) in about 1857 in Douglas County, MO.

They had the following children that I am aware of: Frances Elizabeth and James (born about 1860).

Frances Elizabeth Morrow was born 25 September 1857 in Missouri and died in February 1939. She is buried in the Mole Hill Cemetery in Brosley (Butler County), Missouri. She had married Henry Clay Nation.

A photo of Frances Elizabeth Morrow Nation. Written on the back of this post card is the message: To: Raymond Cowsert From: Grandmother Nation Christmas 1935. I was surprised and delighted to learn that this woman born in 1857 had been at least minimally educated--and the handwriting is quite nice and legible. She died four years after this photo was taken.

The following is directly quoted from Geneva McCown Garrett:

In 1834, Aaron Freeman's oldest daughter, Elizabeth, married William Clinton. In 1839, Aaron Freeman and his two son-in-laws, William Clinton and Henry W. Wood, went to the Okark's on a prospecting trip. They came to the head of a creek and followed it downstream to the mouth. They gave it the name of Indian Creek because of the Indian huts that were built along the banks of the creek in Taney County (later Douglas County).

They really liked the area so they decided to go back and get their families. In the early spring of 1840, they loaded their families in ox carts and headed for the North Fork Hills.

It is said to have taken 25 days to travel over the ridges, down through the hollows and across the rivers to get back to the spring at North Fork River and Indian Creek. They made camp on 10 March 1840.

Aaron Freeman located at the large spring at Tapaz and built a grist mill and a distillery. William Clinton settled on the west side of North Fork, near the mouth of Indian Creek.
