OK: Jesse Sammons is taken by Death - City Editor of Weekly Paper Succumbs After Brief Illness Jesse L. Sammons, 26, city editor of the Democrat-News and former Creek county deputy court clerk, died at the city hospital about 2:30 o'clock this morning after a short illness of pneumonia and lockjaw. Last week Mr. Sammons suffered a cold and left the office Saturday morning. Shortly afternoon he became worse and was removed to the city hospital Sunday evening where complications of lockjaw and pneumonia made his condition grave until his death. Jesse was born here on September 21, 1914, and moved with his family to Bristow when he was seven years of age. He started working as a newspaper reporter on the Bristow Record when he was 18 years old and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was serving as quartermaster clerk in the army at Fort Sill when he was married and left the army shortly after. He was in the army two years. He returned to the newspaper and worked there for a few years before he became a deputy court clerk under Lee Snider. He served there for two years, and became the city editor of the Democrat-News, where he has been employed for the past years. Jesse was active in all affairs of the First Baptist Church holding offices as superintendent of the young people's department of the Sunday school and assistant director of the Baptist Training Union of the church. He was also active in the church at Bristow before he moved here. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce organization and was past vice-chancellor commander of the Knights of Pythias lodge here. Survivors include his wife, Bertha; three children, Wallace 5; Gary 4; and Janice 3; two brothers, E. T. of Brockton, Mass., and Hugh of Livingston, Tex.; his father R. M. also of Livingston, and an uncle, J. F. Southern of Tahlequah. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church here Saturday morning at 10 o'clock with Dr. B. J. Conkwright, pastor, in charge of the service, assisted by Rev. B. I. Cherry, pastor of the First Baptist Church at Cleveland. Rev. Cherry was pastor of the Baptist church at Bristow where Jesse lived in that city. Burial will be in the Oak lawn Cemetery at Bristow. The Harrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
