Obituary for David Hughes:Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Telephone, July 13, 1929, p. 1. David Hughes, Leading Citizen, Passes Away. Life Closed Friday Night For Prominent Retired Lumber Dealer of Bloomington Held in High Esteem.
David Hughes, 83, prominent retired lumber dealer of Bloomington died last night at 12:03 oclock of complications of advanced age at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.G. Miller307 north Sluss avenue. Although Mr. Hughes suffered a very serious illness 10 years ago and had been under the care of a professional nurse, Charles Burns, since that time, he had been in fair health during late years and his death came as a surprise.
The deceased is survived by one son, Louis W. Hughes, 715 east Seventh street; one daughter, Mrs. R.G. Miller; and two grandchildren, Mrs. William Hoadley, daughter of Louis Hughes and Henry Miller, lawyer of Phoenix, Arizona, son of Mrs. R.G. Miller; and one great-grandchild, William Hugh Hoadley. Two children died in infancy and one son, Edward, died in 1899.
Funeral arrangements have been delayed until Mrs. R.G. Miller, who is on a motor trip to Denver, Colo., can be located. Mr. and Mrs. Miller attended the Bar Association meeting at Gary yesterday but left there late yesterday afternoon and cannot be found. Henry Miller who is on his way to this city from Phoenix, Arizona, is expected to arrive here Monday afternoon and the funeral probably will be held Tuesday.
David Hughes was born Sept. 12, 1845, in Bloomington and spent practically his entire life here, with the exception of the period during the Civil War when he lived in Illinois. While in Illinois he was married to Miss Carolyn Gigler, of Lynchburg, Ohio, who preceded him in death 15 years ago.
In 1890 Mr. Hughes purchased half interest in the Hughes Brothers Lumber company which had been founded by his brother, W.B. Hughes in 1882, and he had been actively engaged in the business of that firm until 1910, when he retired and turned the management of the company over to his son, Louis, who has been conducting it since that time under the old firm name of Hughes Brothers. The lumber company, one of the outstanding successful industries in Bloomington, is located at 219 west Fourth street. The Hughes Lumber company has been one of the most substantial business firms on Bloomington for nearly half a century. It has enjoyed unusual success, first under the management of W.B. Hughes, then under the management of David Hughes and of late years under the direction of L.W. Hughes.
Mr. Hughes was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and active in religious affairs. He held membership in the local Odd Fellows lodge and for many years has been one of Bloomingtons outstanding citizens.
During his active days, before his breakdown in health, for many years, David Hughes was one of the best known citizens of Bloomington. He watched Bloomington grow from a village to a small city, and he saw his own firm, the Hughes Lumber Co., keep progress with Bloomington and enlarge into a most prosperous and substantial business. Mr. Hughes was a most kindly man, and always had the confidence of all the people who knew him. He served on the city council for a time. His active business career was terminated with is breakdown in health 10 years ago. Today Judge and Mrs. Robert G. Miller were sought on the road between Bloomington and Colorado Springs on account of the death last night of Mrs. Millers father. David B. Hughes, lone of the leading business men and one of the most highly respected.
