4.  THOMAS B.4 CRITTENDEN (THOMAS3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born 13 Sep 1834 in East Malling, Kent County, England, and died 22 Nov 1925 in Amherst, Erie County, New York.   He married LYDIA DELISKA KIDDER Oct 1856 in Busti, Chautauqua County, NY, daughter of BENJAMIN KIDDER and PARMELIA ABBOTT.   She was born 31 Jul 1838 in Busti, Chautauqua Cty, NY, and died 24 Mar 1885 in Amherst, Erie County,New York.

He came from East Malling, Kent County, England in 1841 to Amherst.,NY in the Village of Williamsville, now considered suburbs east of Buffalo. Young Thomas was seven years old.  The Bureau of Records of the War of the Rebellion, show that he was a Farrier, which is a blacksmith who shoes horses. HE was in company K 26th Regiment of Calvery, NY volunteers, enlisted the 15 th of February 1865 to serve for a period of one year.  That he was mustered into the service of the United States on the 24th of February 1865 and honorably discharged and mustered from that service the 29th of June 1865 with his company at Fort Porter, Buffalo, NY. Born in England: occupation Blacksmith, brown hair , grey eyes, light complection, height 5 feet 6 1/2 inches.

East Malling, is a village and a parish in the Malling District, Kent County, England. The village stands to Otford and Maidstone branc of the southeastern railway 4 miles WNW of Maidstone: and has a post office under Maidstone and a Fair on the 15th of July.  The parish contains also hamlets of Larkfield and New Hythe. Acres 2765, real property. L(pounds) 10,135 of which L40 are in Quarries and L 159 in railways.   Pop in 1851, 1741, in 1861, 1974. Houses 374.   Population increased from the establishment of brick fields and cement works and from the erection of collages for the occupancy of labourers in Aylesford and Burnham parishes.   The property is much subdivided. Clare House is a seat of J. A. Wigan, Esq: and Bradhourne house is the seat of the misses Twishen. About 130 acres are under hops: and there are two paper mills.   The living is a vicarage, united with the chapelry of New Hythe, in the diocese of Canterbury.   Value L 747. Patron J.A. Wigan, ESQ.  The church has portions from early English to late perpendicular: comprises nave, aisles and chancel, with a tower, includes a decorated English Chapel at the E end of the N aisle: contains brasses of 1479 and 1522: and was given to Archbishop Anslem to the nunnery of West.
