Left picture: Original South Cara home as it looked in 1971. It originally had two stories and a lean-to at the back. This is where James lived when he first got married

In 1881, the farm consisted of 223 acres, 70 arable.
The house to the left, before it lost it's upper level and roof, was where William Cromarty and Margaret Gutcher raised their family. On the death of William in 1864, his wife, Margaret became the head of the home until her death in 1886 when her oldest son, James, became heir to the farm of South Cara. James and his family lived in this house until they built the Lower House in about 1894. James only lived in the new home about three years before his wife died and the following year James died, leaving one daughter Mary age 12 years.
In 1881, there were two Cromarty families living on the farm. Margaret (Gutcher) Cromarty and her three sons, James 33, Samuel 22, Robert 16 and one daughter Elizabeth 18; presumably lived in the original two story home. Their father had died in 1864.
South Cara, Upper House built about 1880
The other Cromarty family, in 1881, was William's brother, Robert's family. Ann (Gutcher) Cromarty and her two sons Alexander 27, Robert 16, and one daughter, Ann 20. Robert, the father, had died in 1864, the same year as his brother's death. They lived in the Upper House at this time. Sometime after Ann (Gutcher) Cromarty died in 1892, her son Alexander moved from Farewell with his family to the upper House. Alexander had married Margaret Annal. (This is the family that was living in the Upper House when Alexander and Jane Cromarty
moved from Shetland for the three or four years to see if they would like to take over South Cara.
In the 1881 census the farm consisted of 223 acres, Samuel, William's son, was training to be a cartwright and Robert's son, Robert, was apprenticing to be a Shopkeeper.
Interesting Note: 1n 1871 the original home of William Cromarty & Margaret Gutcher was referred to as South Cara Lower (on lower piece of ground), but once James moved out of the old family home to his new home, his new home was called South Cara, Lower House.
