L.O. Forkner & Familey left Conway Mo For Montana Sept. 8th l906  (NOTE TO THE FAMILY:  Aunt Annie and family left Conway, went to Montana and only rarely returned to the area--mostly Aunt Annie returning in the l920's and l930's after she divorced Lon and remarried Uncle Walter in l923 in L.A..  Her brother, Elmer McMenus and family, and Lon's cousin, Allen Forkner and family, had already gone to Montana, and Aunt Annie and Lon rented out their little farm near Conway--part of Micajah Forkner's original purhcase of "Missouri Swampland" at $40 for 40 acres in l852--and took the train to Montana.  Her journal details the train trip...right down to what they ate at which stop!  When Aunt Annie finally gave Lon the boot in l9l8, they sold the farm and she got the proceeds.  That was about the time she went to the state reform school in Chehalis, Washington and cooked the meals and taught "domestic science" to the inmates.  It was there that the wonderful photo of her in her apron and cap, holding the sifter, standing in front of the table with bowl and crocks was taken.  If I ever get the cookbook together, I am going to put that photo on the cover!)

Turner Jan 20th l908  (NOTE:  This must be the Phillipsburg Hotel on the main street.  Does anyone know if there was ever more than one hotel in the town?  The photos I have of the hotel from the front are hard to see if the building is brick because of the wooden porch and veranda for the second story.  However, photos of the owners in the 20's and 30's -- taken "out the back" of the hotel-- definitely show a brick building in the background).
