Mrs. Davis had been ill for about three months, and two weeks ago her sickness became of such a critical nature that she was moved from the home of her son, Sherman Davis, to the Cobbum residence where she could be given more attention. Mrs. Davis having lived with her son as his housekeeper since the death of her husband, and there being no one but the children of the Davis family to assume the responsibility of caring for her. Her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Grove, moved to Wells county when she was a small child, and settled on a farm one-half mile from Poneto. There, January 16, 1853, she was married to Josiah Davis, and with her husband, she moved onto a farm one-fourth mile distant from her parents home. There she has since made her home until five years ago when she went to live with her son, Sherman Davis, at the death of his wife, in Poneto. She was a member of the Brethren church from a child, but since the disbanding of that church in Poneto, she has attended the Methodist church of that place.

She was the last member of her family to pass away and is survived by three children, Edwin Davis, of Oklahoma City; Mrs. Lewis Cobbum, living near Poneto and Sherman Davis of Poneto. All the children were present when she died, the son living in Oklahoma City having arrived Monday in response to a message telling him of his mother's serious condition.

The funeral services will be held Sunday at eleven o'clock from the Methodist church of Poneto, and interment will be made in the Grove cemetery near Poneto.

PIONEER PASSES AWAY
William N Buckner died at his home in Liberty Township Thursday aged 75

William N. Buckner, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the county, died at his home in Liberty township at four o'clock Thursday afternoon at the age of 75 years. He had been ill for two years with kidney trouble but was confined to his bed only about two weeks, but his disease was accompanied by a general breaking down of the system and relatives and friends waited the inevitable. The funeral was held at the Liberty Union church at 12 o'clock Saturday and the remains were interred in the Mossburg cemetery. A year ago he had erected a fine monument there to mark his last resting place and inscription with the exception of the date of his death was carved on the stone at the time.

William N. Buckner was the son of Thomas and Matilda (Hanson) Buckner, and was born in Bracken county Kentucky, September 15, 1827. He was the youngest of four children, all of whom have preceded him in death except one sister, Mrs. Martha Ambrose, who lives in Powersville, Kentucky. He passed his early life on the farm and secured his education in the subscription school of his native county.

On January 16, 1851 he was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Yelton, at her home in Campbell county, Kentucky and in 1852 they moved to Indiana and settled on a farm in Liberty township. There they fought the battles of the pioneer and converted a wilderness into a pleasant home. Nine children were born to them and with the exception of one daughter, all have grown to manhood and womanhood. They are John T., Matilda Jane Thrailkill, Charles N., Missouri E., Martha A. (deceased), Dr. George W., Miami E., wife of Lewis Beerbower, F. M., and Benjamin F. Mr. Buckner also lived to see his children blessed with children and yet their children become parents, there being now living 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mr. Buckner held the confidence and respect of all who knew him. He was strictly honest, kind and hospitable and altogether such a man as one would be proud to hold as a friend. He was a member of the Disciple's church and Rev. John C. Frazec, pastor of the Van Buren Disciples church will conduct the funeral service.

Amelia Margaret Yelton

1831 - 1916

MRS. AMELIA BUCKNER DIED EARLY THURSDAY
(From Thursday's Daily)

Mrs. Amelia M. Buckner, aged 85, for sixty-one years one of Liberty township's most highly respected and esteemed residents, passed away at 6:30 o'clock this morning, at her home one mile north and two miles west of Liberty Center. Death was due to paralytic stroke, from which she had been helpless since she was stricken while walking across a room at her home a week ago last Monday. Her condition had been such since the paralytic stroke that little hope had been given for her recovery.

The decedent, Mrs. Amelia M. Yelton Buckner , was a daughter of Charles and Amelia (Gosney) Yelton, and was born April 17, 1831, in Campbell County, Kentucky. She was united in marriage to William N. Buckner on January 16, 1851, the ceremony being solemnized at her home in Kentucky, She and her husband continued to reside in Kentucky for four years following their marriage, and then, in the year 1855, came to Wells County, and located in Liberty township, where both spent the remainder of their lives. Mr. Buckner, successful farmer and stock raiser, lived to happily celebrate with his wife their golden wedding at their home in Liberty township, on January 16, 1901, passing away a year later, or fourteen years ago. After his demise Mrs. Buckner continued to reside at the comfortable home which she and her loving husband had acquired in Liberty township. A daughter, Miss Ellen Buckner, resided with her and assisted in looking after her needs in her declining years.

There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Buckner nine children, of whom seven survive the beloved mother, whom they had revered through the years that had brought them to manhood and womanhood. The surviving children are Charles M. Buckner, Mrs. Jane Thrailkill, Miss Ellen Buckner, Mrs. Anna Beerbower, wife of Lewis Beerbower, F. Marion Buckner, and Benjamin F. Buckner, the latter of this city, and John T. Buckner. The children who preceded their mother in death were Dr. G.W. Buckner and Mrs. Martha Pribble.

Mrs. Buckner also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Tarvan, of Vernon, Illinois, now the sole survivor of thirteen children born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yelton. She visited here with her sister about two years ago, and on account of her advanced years, is not expected to try to come to the funeral.

Mrs. Amelia Buckner is mourned by a wide circle of devoted friends as well as by a large circle of relatives. Her life was such that she won the love, respect, and lasting friendship of all with whom she became acquainted and in her death there passed away one of the county's most highly esteemed pioneer residents. She was a devout member for years of the Disciples church to which she was devoted.

The funeral services will be conducted at the Liberty Union church at 10:30 o'clock Friday forenoon, and the burial will be in the Mossburg cemetery.

Hezekiah Doster

Online Biography

DR. HEZEKIAH DOSTER DIED WEDNESDAY
AGED AND ESTEEMED PIONEER DOCTOR HAD BEEN INVALID FOR YEARS

Dr. Hezekiah Doster, for fifty-eight years a resident of Wells County, and one of the most highly esteemed citizens of the community passed away at 11:20 o'clock Wednesday night at his home at Poneto. He had been an invalid for the past four years from paralysis, and during a greater portion of that time had been confined to the house, a helpless invalid. The first stroke was followed by others and it was only his remarkable and wonderful vitality that fought off death for so long. There had been several periods during his long invalidism that it was thought he was dying, but he would revive and continue his brave fight. He took a turn for the worse a week ago and from that time he gradually grew weaker until claimed by death. During his last week he was unable to take nourishment, with the exception of a few liquids. During his last long illness he had been at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.M. Buckner, where his daughter and her husband and his faithful wife who survives him tenderly cared for him and ministered to every want that might alleviate his suffering and make his invalidism the less tedious.

Dr. Hezekiah Doster was born July 6, 1843 in Somersetshire, England, a son of George and Jane Hardwidge Doster. He emigrated with his parents to the United States of America in July 1848, and came to Wells County, Indiana in August 1852 and continued to make this county his home for the balance of his life. He received a common school education from the district schools, and also attended the high school near Portland, Jay County, Indiana, known as Liber College conducted by Ebenezer Bucker from 1860 to 1865, and taught during the winters of the same period. He commenced the study of his profession in 1865 under Drs. James R. McCleery and Charles T. Melshiemer of Bluffton, Ind., and remained under their careful tutorship until 1867, and attended medical lectures at the University of Michigan the same year. He received his degree of M.D. from the Western Reserve Medical College of Ohio in 1868, and commenced the practice of his profession in the southern part of this county the same year. In 1871 he attended Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York, and received a diploma. The remainder of his life from that time was spend in Poneto, Indiana, with the exception of trips that he made to various points. He engaged in the practice of his profession of medicine and farming as long as his health permitted. He had at his death a fine farm of 600 acres. This farm contains an artificial lake, covering about one acre, well stocked with fish. There also is a fine race trace on his farm.

He was married in September, 1866, to Sarepta Tewsbury, who was born October 2, 1846, a daughter of Simon and Polly Porter Tewsbury. Two children were born to this union, Stella, born October 19, 1867, and Victoria, born November 19, 1883. The latter preceded her father in death. Stella, who is now the wife of Marion Buckner, graduated from the Bluffton high school with the class of 1886 and was first in her class of 34.

In 1873, Dr. Doster visited California and nearly all of the western territories. He was commissioned postmaster for Poneto in 1875. Financially Dr. Doster had ever been successful, due to the excellent manner in which he managed his farming interests and the splendid medical practice which he enjoyed for so many years with such eminent satisfaction to his large number of patrons. When he became too infirm to continue the practice of medicine the medical fraternity of Wells County lost one of the most universally esteemed members.

Fraternally Dr. Doster was a member of the Poneto IOOF lodge and of the Bluffton IOOF encampment and Daughters of Rebekah and the lodges will attend the funeral in a body.

Dr. Doster was ever interested in the welfare of his home town of Poneto, and it was largely due to his efforts that the town owes its present location. Formerly Wellsburg, a short distance north, was the railroad stop and Dr. Doster was chiefly instrumental in getting the stop for Poneto. He gave the town the name of Poneto. The name is of Indian origin. Formerly there was a big Indian camp near that place and Poneto denoted the place where they ate their food known as pones.

Dr. Doster was identified for years as a member of the Wells County Medical Society, and was active in the society as long as his health permitted. The society will attend the funeral and furnish pall bearers. Dr. L. Mason of this city was a class mate of Dr. Doster at Liber College.

The funeral services were held at the Buckner residence at Poneto at 10:30 o'clock Friday forenoon in charge of Rev. J.J. Markley, of Murray. Burial occurred in the Grove cemetery where Dr. Doster several years ago had one of largest monuments in the county erected over the graves of his parents.

Mrs. Jane Doster was born in England October 5, 1823, and she and her husband emigrated to the United States after their marriage in that country. They first settled in Ohio in 1848 and came to Wells county in 1852 and settled on a farm near Poneto, where both resided until their deaths. Mrs. Doster owned a farm 600 acres one mile east of Poneto and lived there until three months ago when she began to fail rapidly and was taken to the Buckner home. She leaves one son, Dr. Hezekiah Doster, of Poneto, to mourn her death, he having been born in England in 1843 and come to this country with his parents. He has been in a helpless condition for months from paralysis. One son died in infancy in England.
