Events of 27 or 28 Apr 64, according to "O.R." Series 1, Vol. 34, Part III, p. 328 and Ward L. Schrantz' "Jasper County, Missouri, in the Civil War," publ. 1923 at Carthage, MO by the Carthage Press pages 168-170. These accounts say Capt. T. J. Stemmons with 13 men of Company C of 7th Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia from Cave Springs chased Kinch West and his band of 40 Rebel recruits or guerrillas near Preston, north Jasper County until they killed five of the band (including one of Kinch West's brothers) and wounded Kinch himself and the band scattered. The action came about when West and band seized horses and mules from local men threshing grain. Stemmons himself was helping the threshers and he set out in pursuit and got some of the militiamen from Cave Springs to help him.
