Compiled By: James H. Culbert (descendant 6.3.4.1)

Last Revised: 29 Mar 2005

1. Hannah Bennett CULBERT was born on 24 Sep 1833 in Nether Providence Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, 1 the first child of Moses and Jane FLEMING CULBERT.

Isaac W. WEAVER was born 17 Dec 1834 in Chester, Pennsylvania, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth E. WEAVER. 2  Isaac is first found in the 1860 census living with the Thomas Fleming CULBERT family in Chester Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. 2  His occupation was edge tool maker (machinist). 3

Isaac served as a Corporal under Captain N.B. EDWARDS' Company I, 9th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers from 23 Apr to 27 Jul 1861.  He enrolled in Captain Edward CARROLL's Company F, 95th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers on 17 Sep 1861 as a Corporal.  This regiment was also known as GOSLINE's Zouaves.  In action at Fredericksburg, Virginia, Isaac received a gunshot wound to his left thigh at Salem Church on 3 May 1863.  He spent a few days in field hospitals at Fredericksburg, Virginia and Potomac Creek, then was transferred to the Mount Pleasant General Hospital in Washington, D.C. on 8 May 1863.  On 15 June 1863 he was furloughed.  On 16 Jul 1863 he was admitted to the General Hospital in Chester, Pennsylvania.  On 13 Nov 1863 he was transferred to Captain Oliver D. PEABODY's 55th Company, 2nd Batallion, Invalid Corps (Veterans Reserve Corps), where he served until he was honorably discharged in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 17 Sep 1864.  A note in these records says he was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with light hair and complexion, and blue eyes. 2

Following the Civil War Isaac lived in Chester, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware. 2

On 5 Feb 1873 Isaac married Hannah Bennett CULBERT.  They were married by Henry W. WARREN at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Arch Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 2

Isaac and his wife, Hannah, are found in the 1880 U.S. census for Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.  At this time Isaac's occupation is given as machinist, and Hannah is keeping house. 24

On 29 Aug 1879 Isaac filed a claim for an Invalid Pension.  At the time he lived at 228 Parrish Street, Wilmington, Delaware.  The records show that his claim was still being processed in November 1881.  At some later point Isaac began receiving a $4 per month pension.  On 9 Jun 1887 he filed for an increased pension on account of increased disability from his wound and insufficient pension for the injury he sustained.  At this time he lived at 1021 W. 4th Street, Wilmington, Delaware.  Based on the Act of 27 Jun 1890, on 3 May 1892 Isaac filed for an Invalid Pension, stating that he was totally unable to earn a living due to his wound, which included lumbago with pains, weakness in the small of his back, rheumatism, and neuralgia. 2

Hannah and Issac had one known child:

On 2 Jun 1898 Isaac filed a pension document stating that they had no living children (even thought this was obviously incorrect). 2

Hannah died in 1901 at the age of 67 or 68 and was buried in the Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. 4  Her gravestone can be seen here: Weaver Monument

The 1890 Act was amended on 9 May 1900.  On 4 Jan 1905 Isaac filed a declaration for an increase in pension on account of no means to support himself because of advanced age (he was then 70).  At this time he was receiving $10 per month pension.  This declaration was witnessed by Benjamin D. BORGIA and Samuel HAWKINS, both of Wilmington, Delaware, who stated that they had been acquainted with Isaac for ten and fifteen years, respectively.  Isaac was living at 1109 West 7th Street, Wilmington, Delaware at this time. 2

Under the Act of 6 Feb 1907, on 16 Feb 1907 Isaac filed a declaration for pension increase to $15 per month on account of his age.  This declaration was witnessed by James CROSBY of 704 French Street, Wilmington, and Charles H. LIPPINCOTT, of 1101 West 5th Street, Wilmington.  Isaac still lived at 1109 West 7th Street in Wilmington. 2

Isaac died 6 Aug 1912 at the age of 77. 2 4  At the time of his death he was receiving a pension of $30 per month. 2  He was buried alongside Hannah. 4  His gravestone can be seen here: Weaver Monument

Immediately following Isaac's death, on 12 Aug 1912, Jennie M. WEAVER sent a letter to the Commissioner of Pensions requesting Isaac's accrued pension.  She stated she was the only daughter and survivor.  At this time she lived at 1404 Dupont Street, Wilmington, Delaware. 2

Jennie died 27 Sep 1973. 5  After Jennie's death she was cremated, and her name was added to Isaac and Hannah's grave monument. 5.  This monument can be seen here: Weaver Monument
