JOHN SNOWDEN CULBERT, ELLEN JANE SMITH CULBERT,
AND ANNIE E. SMITH SPENCER CULBERT FAMILY

Compiled By: James H. Culbert (descendant 6.3.4.1)
Last Revised: 30 Mar 2005

4. John Snowden CULBERT was born on 23 1 or 26 2 June 1839, the fourth child of Moses and Jane FLEMING CULBERT.

In the 1850 census, John, age 11, was living at home in Chester Township, Delaware Co., PA. 10  By the 1860 census he had left home.

I found two John CULBERT listings in an 1859 Philadelphia city directory, one a manufacturer located at 1309 Lombard St., and the other a laborer on West Washington. 11

On 24 Oct 1861 John enlisted as a private in Co. G, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry.  He later became a corporal.  At Morris Island, South Carolina in August, 1863 he became disabled by deafness in both ears.  He was discharged at the end of his 3-year enlistment on 23 Oct 1864 at Chapins Farm, Virginia. 17  He later filed for a Civil War invalid pension, and was receiving $22 per month in 1903. 19

Ellen Jane SMITH was born in Bristol, England 3 on 18 1 or 19 3 Jan 1841.  She married John on 29 Oct 1861, just after he enlisted, and probably just before he left home. 4

On 27 Mar 1863 J.S. CULBERT was named a member of a committee paying tribute to the memories of two fallen comrades of Co. G, 97th Pennsylvania Regiment, Lieutenant Caleb HOOPES, Commanding. 8

In an 1866 Philadelphia city directory John was a blacksmith located at 1822 South Front Street, Philadelphia. 13

In an 1870 Philadelphia city directory John was a blacksmith with his home listed as 647 Sears, Philadelphia. 14

The children of John and Ellen were:

Daughter Jane married John B. EVANS. 3 [NOTE: I wonder if John is any relation to Sarah L. EVANS, the wife of James Fleming CULBERT.Jane CULBERT EVANS died 25 Nov 1907 7 9 of tuberculosis at age 43 9.  She was treated by H.A. ? of 5900 Market St., Philadelphia since 1 Mar 1907. 9  She last lived at 38 South 59th St., Philadelphia in the 46th Ward. 9  The death certificate informant was W.A. FAIRLAMB, undertaker, of FAIRLAMB and Sons, Chester, PA. 9  She was buried 29 Nov 1907 in the Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery.  Her gravestone may be seen here: Evans monument  In the burial records she is named Jennie Pauline CULBERT. 7  She was the granddaughter, Jane, mentioned in Jane FLEMING CULBERT's will.

In the June 1870 census 16 we find the family in Philadelphia with John S., Ellen, and children Jane, Emily, and Robert.

Sometime shortly after 1870, the family moved to Chester, Pennsylvania.  In 1872, John was a blacksmith living at 19 Market St., Chester. 29  In 1879 John had formed the BAKER and CULBERT business with Joseph BAKER, who lived in Village Green. 38  Their business was located at East 6th St. and Crosby, Chester, and John lived at 334 Galatin. 30  He was still at the same business location and residence through 1883. 31 37

In the 1880 census, the family is found in the North Ward of Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.  John is listed as a plumber, his wife is keeping house, Jennie, Robert, and Henry are in school, and Howard and Ellen are at home. 40

In 1885, John was a plumber living at 317 East 10th St., Chester. 32  He was still there in 1889, and his son, Robert, was also listed as a plumber at the same location in 1889. 33

Ellen died of cancer on 5 Feb 1891 at the age of 50.  The attending physician was Frank J. EVANS.  At this time John and Ellen were living on Galatin Street in Chester, Pennsylvania. 21  She is buried in the Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery. 6 21>  The family monument may be seen here: John S. CULBERT family monument

On 10 Nov 1892 John was married to the widow, Annie E. SMITH SPENCER, by Rev. J.T. SWINDELL, a Methodist minister in Philadelphia.  It is very likely that Annie was the younger sister of Ellen (see SPENCER).  At this time John was a steamfitter in Philadelphia, aged 53, and Annie was aged 49.  They produced no children. 20

In the 1900 census 28 we find the family in Philadelphia with John, Annie, son J.H. (Howard) CULBERT, and step-son J. (James) F. SPENCER.

From 1900-1901 John was a fitter, living at 2543 North Colorado, Philadelphia.  John H. CULBERT, clerk, also listed his home at the same address.  (This John H. could be John S.'s son, J. Howard) 15 36

John died 1 Jan 1904 18 at age 64 of pneumonia. 9  At this time he was still a steamfitter living at 2543 No. Colorado St., Philadelphia. 5 9  He was buried 5 Jan 1904 9 in the Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery, Elwyn, Pennsylvania by William F. CUSHING, undertaker, of 1100 Snyder Avenue, Philadelphia. 6 9  The family monument may be seen here: John S. CULBERT family monument

In January, 1904 Annie applied for a Civil War widow's pension.  Her post office address at this time was 2543 North Colorado, Philadelphia. 18  It appears from the pension record that she never learned how to write her name.  It was also noted that she and John never owned any property. 18 22

In September, 1904 Annie lived at 1635 South Fifteenth Street, Philadelphia with John K. SCHAFER, age 39, and Mrs. Margaret SCHAFER, age 60. 22

In February, 1918 Annie's widow's pension check of $75.00 was returned to the government because she was declared insane.  At this time she lived at 5854 Trinity Place, Philadelphia, along with her son, James SPENCER and his wife Carrie F. SPENCER.  She began her last illness in December, 1917 and entered Philadelphia General Hospital at 34th and Pine.  Her attending physician was Ella M. ANDERSON. 25  She died 21 May 1918 due to hardening of the arteries, and was supposedly buried in Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery by undertaker William CUSHING.  Her grave location in that cemetery is unknown. 23 24 25  She is not listed in the cemetery burial listings according to Jane Evans, who keeps the cemetery burial records. 34

5 John is listed as having died 10 Jan 1904 in the WPA Project No. 13191 cemetery listing, and 01 Jan 1924 on his grave monument.  Both of these are judged to be incorrect.

6 The WPA Project No. 13191 listing shows grave no. 507 for John and Ellen, which corresponds to Plot No. 627 from the current cemetery records.

7 The WPA Project No. 13191 listing shows grave no. 508 for Jennie, which corresponds to Plot No. 623 from the current cemetery records.  The given death date of 12 Dec 1907 appears to be wrong.
