JAMES and SARA LOUISE EVANS CULBERT

Compiled By: James H. Culbert (Descendant 6.3.4.1 from Moses)
Last Revised: 9 Feb 2004

7. James CULBERT was born 22 (Feb 4 or Dec 1 ) 1847 in Nether Providence Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, the seventh child of Moses and Jane FLEMING CULBERT. 1  In the Moses CULBERT family bible his middle name was given as Fleming, however in no other place has this middle name been seen.  On the contrary, the Chester City Directories give his middle initial as either C. or E.

In the 1870 census, James C. CULBERT was age 24, and was a store clerk. 2

From 1869 to 1886 he was a clerk (except for 1883 when he was listed as a salesman 29) tending William EVES, Jr.'s retail store, at 1147 Edgmont Avenue, Chester, Pennsylvania.  James also boarded or lived there as well with his sister, Martha M. CULBERT EVES, and her family. 5 6 7 8 25 26 27 28 29 30 33

In the 1880 census, James, age 33, was a store clerk living with the William H. EVES, Jr. family in Chester, Pennsylvania. 32

There was a certificate placed in the Moses CULBERT family bible, with the following inscription: "10 May 1883, James CULBERT, Union Methodist Episcopal S.S., organized at Hinkson's Corner, Nether Providence, in 1812." 3

James married Sarah Louise EVANS, formerly of Havre de Grace, Maryland, on 16 Jun 1885, at the EVANS' residence at 128 Kerlin, Chester, Pennsylvania, by Elder J.H. CROUCH, and assisted by the Rev. C.F. TURNER. 24  James and Sarah had no children. 31  [Note: Is there any relationship between Sarah Louise EVANS and John EVANS?  John was the husband of Jennie Pauline CULBERT, and the son-in-law to James' brother, John Snowden CULBERT.]

In 1891, James C. was manager for Mrs. William H. EVES and he lived at 1019 Edgmont, Chester, PA 9  This was following the death of William H. EVES, Jr. in 1881.

In 1893 James C. was a clerk living at 1019 Edgmont, Chester, PA. 10

Following the death of his sister, Martha Culbert EVES, in Aug 1894, James took over the operation of the grocery, and probably its ownership as well.  From 1895 to 1898 he was a grocer at 1147 Edgmont and lived at this same address. 11 12 34  The following is an image of his grocery store ad placed in the 1897-1898 Chester City Directory: 34

In 1901-02 James C. was living at 1210 Edgmont Ave., Chester, and working as a clerk. 13 14

From 1904 to 1906 James C. was a salesman living at 1222 Providence, Chester.  His wife, Sarah Louise, was listed as a music teacher. 15 16

James C. died 20 or 21 Dec 1918 4 at the age of 71 in Chester, Pennsylvania.  The medical certification on the death certificate says that Adam J. SIMPSON, of Chester, treated James from 28 Nov to 21 Dec 1918, and last saw him alive on 21 December. 4  James died of myocardial degeneration, of which he had suffered for one year, complicated by nephritis. 4  James' wife was the informant on the death certificate, was living at 1229 Upland, Chester, stated that James' father was born in America(sic), and stated that James was a salesman. 4  W.H. FAIRLAMB & Son, of Chester, was the undertaker, and the burial occurred in Havre de Grace, Maryland on 24 Dec 1918. 4
