FAMILY 54A HUNTINGDON / GRETTON / DUDDINGTON / WILTS
See also Gretton FAM 37 and FAM 11B and Duddington FAM 16
At Northants R O are documents (not yet looked at) :
ZB91/85, ref John of Gretton 1699, & Thomas of Gretton 1775
I have a copy of Elisabeth Cunningtons book on the history
of this family...let me know if you want more details
The Elusive Reverend John :
The Wiltshire Cunningtons have thought that they are descended
from a Reverend John Cunnington, and I paraphrase here the
relevant part of Elisabeths notes on the subject, as a preface
to FAM 54A - 54G.......note that there is also a copy of an
early attempt at the families history as FAM 54F.
This elusive cleric is said to have come from Huntingdon,
either the town, or perhaps the county, in the early 18th
century (1), and been a kind of Vicar of Bray in that he
changed his religious views (as expediency dictated)between
High Church and Low Church. This apparently exasperated his
parishioners, who are said to have "tossed him in a blanket"
whilst shouting :
"High Church, Low Church, Jump again Cunnington"
..........makes a good story, doesn't it ! !
According to (8) there were a number of clergymen who changed
their politics in the 17th century and still maintained their
livings.
"Mrs Cunnington, a widow, who came to Gretton accompanied by
her son and two Daughters" is noted by Elizabeth, mother of
William III, as the start of the family line. William III
himself, in the tree he produced, noted her as the widow
of the Rev John - though with no apparent or obvious reason
or evidence for doing so!
When Elisabeth produced her history in 1976, she referred to
a document which said (1) but unfortunately had no provenance.
She spent some time looking for this cleric without success
in the following :
(2)J Foster Alumni Oxfordensis 1500-1886 8 Vols pub 1887-1892
(3)J & J A Venn Alumni Cantabrigienses 10 Vols pub 1922-1954
(4)Card Index of Congregational Ministers (Dr Williams Library,
and the Congregational Library, Memorial Hall, Farringdon Rd,
London)
(5)Huntingdonshire Parish RecordsLibri Cleric MSS, records in
Lincoln Archives
(6)G Eland editor of Purefoy Letters Vol II p 241 pub 1931
(7)Lincolnshire Notes & Queries Vol IX p 248 pub 1907
(8)Victoria County History of Lincolnshire Vol II pub 1906
What she did find was that the Rev John could have been JOHN
(135) FAM 37 born 1694, as the widows son JOHN (866) FAM 54A
was born circa 1730...even if this JOHN was not (the) (a) Rev,
he could still be the same person as JOHN (865) FAM 54A ??
In June 1975 Elisabeth found in the Usher Gallery in Lincoln,
a portrait labelled "Rev John Cunnington,Priest Vicar of Lincoln
Cathedral, and of Caenby Corner, Lincs" The portrait is in oils,
unsigned, and on it is written "aetat(aged) 100 Anno Dom 1706"
...meaning he was born circa 1606.The Usher Gallery bought the
portrait in 1962 from a Mr P Mallalieu of 30 Bywell Rd Sunderland.
The portrait is labelled 2537, the Keeper of Art told Elisabeth
that the label is incorrect, and should have read that the Rev
JOHN(A) was the father of the Rev THOMAS (B), who was Priest
Vicar** of Lincoln Cathedral and incumbent of Caenby Corner,
Lincs. This also appears incorrect as Venn (3) describes Rev
THOMAS (B)as the son of a THOMAS, a blacksmith of Ely Cambs,
and was born there 1678.There is a quantity of information about
him in (3) (6) and (7), and he and his family are noted under Ely
in FAM67E.
** Elisabeth's notes say exactly this - "Priest Vicar" and
"Vicar Choral"

FAMILY 54F
Early history of Cunnington Family as recorded by Elizabeth, daughter
of Wm l of Heytesbury.
It seems that nothing is known of our, Cunnington, family beyond,
or further back than what refers to the personal history of "Gretton
Grandmother" and her husband. Gretton Grandmother (born Elizabeth
Cooper) was the dau of John Cooper who lived at Gretton in a house
and land of his own. He had three sons and two dau, the sons were
John, Nathaniel, and Thomas.
John opened a Public House at Gretton, much against his sister's
(Grandmother's) wishes, who said she "could not wish him well in
his undertaking because if she did she would wish her neighbours
ill". He married and had a family.
Nathaniel the second son, a fine tall handsome man, aquiline nose,
dark eyes and hair, like our Henry only taller, he was passionately
fond of music, which he well understood - was a famous bellringer -
he did not marry.
Thomas married and had a family, at one time living at Leicester.
Elizabeth was the eldest dau, always considered a very clever,
superior woman, was brought up or lived with her aunt Mrs Rowell at
Gretton, was with her till she married at 19 yrs of age - her
younger sister Martha, a fine tall person of handsome features and
dark eyes and hair - was married to William Craxford, a farmer at
Gretton, was like Mrs Lee in manner and character, had a large family.
While Elizabeth was residing with her aunt, a Lady and Gentleman,
relatives, called in their carriage wishing to take her home to
reside with them - this she positively refused to do and nothing
more was heard of or from them.
The Rowells were engaged in a then good and fashionable business at
that time the manufacture of the stiff bodices newly introduced from
Germany or somewhere, her future husband was an apprentice at the
Rowells where he saw Grandmother, but was not approved by her aunt,
who from suspicious motives had the door closed after her while she
was out one evening with him, - at this she was greatly offended -
she appears to have been of a resolute disposition and went immediately
to the house of a friend - next day she felt unable to return and the
young man induced her (though before she left her aunt the thought of
marrying had not crossed her mind) to accompany him to church - as soon
as she left the church door the thought struck her "What have I done?".
She then appeared from her own confession to have deeply felt the
importance of the step she had taken. She always advised her daughters
not to marry.
The young people commenced business at a town a short distance from
Gretton and Elizabeth did not see her aunt again till after a period
of 2 or 3 years, when she relented and again made her appearance
leading her two little ones, and was immediately restored to favour.
The family into which Grandmother had married consisted of a widow,
Mrs Cunnington, who seems to have been left by her husband under
reduced cicumstances, she had left Huntingdon and accompanied by one
son and two daughters came to reside at Gretton for the sake of
privacy and retrenchment - remnants and traces of their former
prosperity appeared in the small stock of furniture they brought
with them, and proved the statement she made that her family was
highly respectable but reduced. Her son John married Elizabeth,
her daughter Eleanor married a person of the name of Chapman, and
the other dau Susan remained at home unmarried.
John and Elizabeth Cunnington became the parents of 6 children,
3 sons and 3 dau. Their eldest son John married Eleanor Craxford,
and their children were 3 sons - William, John, and Thomas. William
the next son married Mary Meares, and the third son Thomas, joined
his brother William in his business at Heytesbury and did not marry.
Elizabeth their eldest dau married Mr Hambleton of Oakington, who
died age 42. The next dau, Mary, married a Scotsman Mr Maule, and
Anne the youngest married Mr Chambers. While in conversation with
this individual an Earl or Duke of the family of Montague told him
"John (Cooper) you are of a good family - a very high family you
come from".
______________________________________________
William lll, also wrote an account and notes that Elizabeth
realised the step she had taken only after the ceremony.
Her two little ones were boys, his grandfathers.
Anne and Mr Chambers had one dau, who married Mr Holbrook.
He refers to Mr Cunnington dec, as the Revd John.
Henry, who was like Nathaniel Cooper, is Williams brother, and
married Lydia Mary Buckland.
Mrs Lee, who was like Martha Cooper, is probably Elizabeth's sister
Anne, who married Gregory Lee and went to the USA.

It is interesting to note that the Gretton PR show bp & bur of the
first Nathaniel Cooper, and also the births recorded in Barker's
Bible, with the exception of the bp of John William and the marriage
of John Cunnington & Elizabeth Cooper. They may have been married
away from Gretton, and the two elder children were evidently born
away fron Gretton. The bp of the rest of the family are recorded,
though in one or two cases the dates in Barker's Bible, written by
Wm l perhaps from memory when he had left home,do not agree with
dates of baptisms. The bp of the family of John Cooper, son of
Nathaniel, and of his son John, the father of Elizabeth, wife of
John Cunnington, as recorded in PR match the records in the Bible.
